NFL Season Arrives

Titans or Steelers.  What do you think?  As interested as I am in tonight’s opener, I’m more worried right now about the Cardinals.  I selected Larry Fitzgerald in the first round of my fantasy football draft Tuesday night, and then added Kurt Warner as my starting QB in the second.  I guess I know who I’ll be rooting for this year (in addition to my beloved Pats).

Feels like just yesterday that I was watching Super Bowl XLIII, and here we are seven months later with another season upon us.  Of course, we went on to put both Troy Polamalu and Larry Fitzgerald on the cover of Madden this year, and as the presenting sponsor of NFL Kickoff weekend, we couldn’t be more excited to see the start of the NFL season finally upon us.

Madden continues to bring in a record number of gamers competing online, we're very pleased with the great critical acclaim for a product we're quite proud of, and yesterday we expanded the franchise to the App Store for the first time.  Now you can play Madden on your iPod touch and iPhone.  It's Madden, so of course you have all the NFL players, teams and stadiums, along with full control over team depth charts, cross-team trading, modes like Play Now or Season, and John Madden coaching tips.

Hopefully you also saw that we've just re-launched EA SPORTS Football World (available in English, French and German) and also our new Game Face tool.  It lets users upload photos of their face to EA SPORTS Football World and EA SPORTS.com to create their virtual likeness on the sites.  Players can then download their Game Face to be their Virtual Pro in FIFA Soccer 10 like I did.

Game Face takes player creation to the next level in FIFA with unrivalled physical likeness and, in my case, makes my dream of playing for my Mighty Reds of Liverpool finally possible.  And talking soccer, delighted to see England booking their tickets to South Africa with the surgical dismantling of Croatia this week (including two goals from Stevie G). Could this be the year??? 1966 is such a distant memory now...

Few other thoughts:

- Springboks - thanks for your posts about rugby. Right now, we have no plans to develop and publish a rugby game.

- Red Sox continue to splutter their way towards the play offs (hopefully). A season that started looking like we had more pitching than we knew what to do with is finishing with only Jon Lester as the only reliable arm in the rotation. Unfortunately, the Yankees look unstoppable this year...

9/11 - Let's remember those who died and those who gave their lives that day.

Troy on Madden 10 cover. Troy gets hurt in first regular game of season. Seems the legend of the Madden curse continues. i wonder if Larry will avoid it. Peter do you have any coments about the Madden curse?

Hi Peter,

Looking forward to play FIFA 10, couple of questions for you

1) Is EA planning to release FIFA World Cup 2010 game? How this game will be different from other EA World Cup football games?

2) EA have acquired ICC license, are you planning to release official ICC World Twenty20    game (happening in April/May 2010) or are you going to delay next Cricket game till 2011 and release an official game for ICC World cup 2011 (happening in Feb 2011)?

suspense is killing us !!!

Peter, is there any chance we will see a PC version of Madden next year? It's been 2 years now and it doesn't get any easier especially when the NFL season starts.

Hi Peter.

I have a question about FIFA series in PC.

Will FIFA WC 2010 be the same with FIFA11 in terms of team and producer or it will be a total other project?

Also is FIFA 11 a turning point for FIFA PC series? Will it is thought to be like consoles or even better?Because new hardware is out ,most PC users have great  specs and for thoe with not so good hardware game can run at low specs

thank you Mr.Moore, and waiting for an answer on this!

After 2+ years of being left out and kept in the dark and watching everyone else including those with IPod touch & IPhones get their own version of Madden I hope that what they come out with for the PC will be worth the wait. I wonder if we will hear anything before the end of the year?

I am really disappointed with EA right now, a part from football which for obvious reasons needs to be published, all the things EA care about are american sports.

Such great sports like Rugby, Cricket, Volleyball are completely forgotten by them.

About the fifa demo,  it pretty much the same as the new Madden, an update with some little touches here and there. Not enough to be a must buy. I'll stick to 09.

Then again they will release the same game with some gimnicks called "Road to the World Cup" in a few months.

Some things never change.

P.S.1

Nice post about the DreamCast, the one and only nice post in a long time.

P.S.2

U look good in that liverpool uni...but who did that for you?? i tried mine and it did stink...

Hi

Is it true that EA Sports have ceased the production of Cricket games from now, I couldn't find a Cricket Thread anywhere on the EA Sports site. So does this mean the end of cricket games from EA.

Apparently they have moved Cricket thread to "Other EA Games" here is the link

forums.electronicarts.co.uk/cricket-series

For some reason EA UK try to neglect Cricket thread.

On the other hand Madden and even NHL have occupied main threads in the UK forum.

EA thinks that putting these games in the main thread will increase their sales.

In case if you haven’t noticed “Ashes Cricket 09” was #1 in UK charts. That tells you that if you release a decent Cricket title that has potential to out sale any other game in certain regions. It looks like EA’s “thinktank” don’t know this.

Its recession time and EA decided to approach conservatively, that is they decided to cut all their low income titles (such as Rugby, Cricket, Nescar etc) and keep making profitable titles like Madden, FIFA. One can understand that but if its recession then why would I spent 50 – 60 $ to buy an updated roster when I can get Madden 09 or FIFA 09 in half price. They stick to their North American franchise sports titles, the current market is saturated with such game, every year both EA and 2K release two basketball and hockey games with minor tweaks, why do I buy the same game with updated rosters, I will save my 60$ and buy some original title like “Batman Arkham Asylum”.

They have to offer something new in Madden or FIFA.

No wonder EA is loosing money. EA Sports need fresh thinking some radical approach like make new sports titles like Tennis, Cricket, Rugby, badminton all these sports games have great potential. EA should outsource their gaming to countries like China or India and develop new sports titles.

Imagine if EA shut down their Vancouver office and hire 1000 people in India how much money they can save? If EA wont make any radical changes soon then they will be like GM of gaming industry, the difference will be that they wont get any bail out !!

Peter,

I haven't posted in a while here.  I have been too busy enjoying the Tiger Woods Online expirment.  I have been pleasantly surprised to see Mike D on the Tiger boards create his own subsection to take in ideas for next year's game.  This seems to be a really good move by EA Sports.  Now if the NCAA folks would do something similar then I might be completely happy.

Peter has probably been glad to have me away so I won't rip him.  I will be back.  I just have a really busy schedule right now so I haven't had as much time to spend here.

Mr.Moore I want to ask what is happening with FIFA series on PC????In the last years we had low-quallity many people are angry at EA(and the EA's image is not that good right now>in the PC gamers view).

Since now we have only a patched version of FIFA 2004!!!!WITH SMALL IMPROVEMENTS>GAMEPLAY WISE AND GRAPHICS WISE.Only teh player models are making the difference.

So what are your plans regarding the future of FIFA franchise on PC???

-will FIFA 11 be a true turning point for the PC version???

Peter.  You are a star.  An inspiration to people like myself, who just laugh at comments of people like denis with a chip on their shoulder and an axe to grind trying to pin something on one individual.  I think you were definitely the right man for EA Sports.  I am one of the disgruntled who was getting tired of yearly updates of games trying to justify £40 each year, making our last years purchase worth £5 if that.  Thank goodness you came with the strategy you did with MMA and Fight Night and alternating between the two.  I think this is a great idea.  This year, I have downloaded the Fifa 10 demo on my 360 and PS3 and am impressed.  It is highly pretty and fluid, and the 360 control is nice, although i dont notice it too much - or not as much as I thought I would.  Perhaps it is my style of play that has to adjust.

Going back to the alternating thing, as I have Fifa 09 on my PS3, I am considering getting Pro Evo 10 on the 360 this year.  Just because I dont feel Fifa 10 is different enough (or maybe im just not good enough to notice).

Do you think that you may move to a similar strategy with the major sports titles like FIFA, NBA, NHL to give customers a greater appreciation for the innovations you could make on a 2 yearly basis as opposed to each year.  If you are like me and you love your EA sports games - I have NHL09 and NBA 09 on 360, Fifa 09 and Madden 09 on PS3.  So you see, to have all the new year updates for these games would be £160, and is hard to justify for the minor improvements year on year, but I could see the value every 2 years.

Of course, I have the option of just buying the updates only every 2 years, but it does make me wonder what kind of innovations you could make if you worked on each for 2 years, instead of churning them out every year.  Madden to me has become more unplayable the last couple of years - I thought Madden 07 on 360 was brilliant, but each year it is getting overly complex.  So it seems because each game has to be updated every year, one of the things being pushed is realism, which is all good.  But then too much realism can come at the expense of fun.

I'm rambling now I know.  I hope this gives you something to mull over, although im sure you have heard it before.  Your thoughts or opinions would be wonderfully appreciated.

Well Ive thought about this quite a bit and you know what dont even bother. Its clear there isnt the commitment to make a quality version of Madden for the PC. After making the mistake of buying EA's NFS Shift for PC and seeing the blatant disregard for ATI card users it really just cemented things for me it made me realise that if Madden had come ot for PC this is likely what it would have been a console part married to and Nvida corporate partnership cuz thats really what its all about these days isnt it? Corporate partnerships with Nvidia, Xbox, PS3 ect.

It is what it is nothing anyone says is going to change it my only wish is that you drop your NFL licensing for a platform you arent publishing on because really thats the crappy part. You want to not make a PC version thats your right but to hold the NFL licensing rights so no one else can is well .....fill in the blank.

Hi Peter. You have no idea how much I appreciate you replying to my post. It is very sad to hear that you guys have no plans to develop a game for the sport I am so passionate about, Rugby. At the end of the day I can carry on with my gaming life knowing what’s going on and embrace my Rugby 08 again. I do have hope that this does not mean the end of Rugby and EA? I am also very happy that the news you gave us Rugby fans is out there for all to see, although not good news, at least we don’t have to wonder anymore. I'll be sure to carry over the news on all the rugby blogs, where we crazed fans get together and complain about not having a new Rugby game and gave hope to each other with hearsay gossip about a game in development. Still think a new game would sell very well! You.ve got so many eager clients out there licking their lips just at the thought of Rugby on PS3. Anyway Mr. Moore, thank you once again!!! SPRINGBOKS FOREVER!!!

I wish I could be as a polite and gracious as Springboks but I'm afraid I can't. I'd like to trouble you with the inevitable "why?". Rugby may not be huge here in the States but it IS on the rise. The Eagles may be dead last in almost everything but they put their HEART into the sport. With Rugby being accepted back in the Olympics, the World Cup coming again, word of mouth, etc. "The Sleeping Giant's Stirring". People are learning that the last time Rugby was in the Olympics that the U.S. won-back to back and became the Superpower of the sport-hardly the case now but-the U.S. is getting BACK into it after almost 100 years on hiatus. It may not be huge here but it's only going up. All of which with little or NO publicity. Do you just not see it as a profitable game? Or is it for other reasons? I do appreciate you informing us (however hard to find) your stance on Rugby. I'd just like to know why. Thank you.
