Madden Launch Is Here

As excited as we all are about the launch of Madden at midnight tonight, I'm actually thousands of miles away in the UK, where I gave a keynote this morning at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival.  My speech focused on the evolution of EA SPORTS over the past two years, while I also participated in an entertaining Oxford-style debate in the afternoon about the power of blockbuster games in our industry. With Madden in stores Friday and FIFA not far behind in October, you can guess which side I was on.

As for Edinburgh, this is my first time in this beautiful city, and in addition to the Interactive Festival, there are a myriad of other celebratory events taking place during the month of August. Most prominent is the Military Tattoo, which takes place in the evenings against the backdrop of the 14th century castle which still dominates the city skyline today. I was fortunate to be able attend the event on Tuesday evening, and what a spectacle it was...

Next week, I'll be at GamesCom in Cologne, where we'll be showing a number of our upcoming fall titles, including NBA LIVE 10, Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online and NHL 10. FIFA is obviously our headliner for the show, and we'll have a number of announcements about both FIFA as well as EA SPORTS Active next week.

Even from across the pond, I've enjoyed following all the anticipation for our 21st Madden launch.  I'll be in bed and won't be able to watch tonight's preseason game with the Steelers and Cardinals, but I've read plenty of commentary the past few days on the product.  I loved GameDaily's, "If you're a football fan and you don't have this game, well, guess what? You're not a football fan.", and I'd encourage you to let me know what you think.

Of course, the conversations will be happening across various pages on the new easports.com, where you can talk to development team members and ask questions as you play, get tips and tricks from the dev team, check the online play and online franchise FAQ and even post your favorite highlights.  Enjoy the game...

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Madden King,

That's something we're working to resolve quickly.  There are some approvals that need to take place before we can use his likeness in the game before this can happen.  We'll let everyone know once we have an idea when it can happen.  Hang tight!

So who stood in line last night to get the game and what have you spent time doing so far?  What do you think of it?

Timmy458 said:

I didn't go to any midnight release cause I have better things to do than stand in line for hours just for a game, I don't even plan on standing in line for Modern Warfare 2 and I am more excited for that than I was for Madden. But I was wondering why you can't trade draft picks in online franchise since in my franchise a majority of our trades won't work since we agreed on them with draft picks involved before we knew we couldn't trade draft pick which was very disappointing to hear.

Dewiel said:

Timmy458, while I realize that this is not the best solution, there is a way for you to trade draft picks. Here's what you would need to do:

1. Make your scheduled draft pick

2. Have the person that you are wanting to make a trade with make their draft pick

3. Each of you would need to go in and release your guy

4. Finally, each of you would need to go in and sign the guy that you wanted

If you do this, don't forget to keep track of what you are owed from the other guy!

Hope this helps!

I did not go to midnight release nor do I plan to pick this title up in the near future.  NCAA is always a must have for me so not enough money for Madden at this time.  If we are talking a game with the depth of Head Coach then it might become a must have.  If EA Sports ever decides to build an NCAA Head Coach game I will line up at midnight.  Produce this title and I will line up.  Madden is on the list of games to get but it is not very high on that list.

My money is going towards a wireless network adapter to put my 360 online.  This will avoid  stretching an ethernet cord over three rooms.  I have asked before but I will ask again.  Is there any way EA Sports can put patches on the internet without having to use the 360's update system?

Anyway that is where my money is headed.  Madden has been getting good reviews but I saw something on CNBC that stated that it is very similar to 09.  I don't know since I didn't get 09.  Head Coach 09 got my pro football money last year.

Timmy458 said:

Yea we just decided to do it the way you pointed out Dewiel, it was just a little disappointing we couldn't trade the picks the way I thought we would be able to.

Post only positive feedback here, negative feedback will not be tolerated from us PC gamers anymore. That’s why my post and another from yesterday was deleted. I guess it’s true, the truth hurts.

PS

This post will be deleted soon for not following policy number 1-9846 which states the following:

Who are you PC gamers to tell the truth about EA Sports? You can’t stop us from selling roster updates to the console players, you PC gamers could have had an update to but you actually demand improvements for your money. So we canceled the PC version.

Here is the post that was deleted yesterday:

Raczilla,

I was in line at midnight to purchase my copy of Madden 2010 for around 45 minutes and all I got was notification that Madden 2010 isn’t on the PC again this year. I’m not upset as I realize business is business and because of no Madden 2009 I was able to play NBA 2k9 and Pro Evolution Soccer. Two great games I was able to play because of no Madden last year. So I’ll be buying their upcoming games again this year. But because EA Sports has abandoned us PC gamers I will not purchase Need For Speed: Shift and Dragon Age: Origins. Or any other game that any division of Electronic Arts have to do with. Like I said business is business even for us consumers.

Dewiel said:

August 15, 2009 1:10 PM

As we've stated here many times, we have not abandoned the PC platform. The team is working on ways to provide an even better product to the community. Until then, feel free to post your thoughts on the PC version of Madden here in the forums: forum.ea.com/.../399.page

Once again, thanks for your feedback, and if you have any other questions, feel free to PM me directly.

The game is significantly improved from last year. The play balance is better. Franchise is a lot easier to use. Navigation is dramatically improved, so great job there.

As someone who has purchased every release of this game going back in time, I respectively submit the following three suggestions:

1. Please add a play editor, so that we may create our own plays.

2. At the very least, please allow us to create our own custom playbooks that can select plays from various team playbooks.

3. Please allow us to create our own custom presentation view of the game. If we could just have the same view adjustment functionality as in Replay, that would be perfect.

These features would bring even more immersion and interest to the game. Thanks for your consideration.

Raczilla, this is a response for what you said to me in the last blog.

First, I don't like online gaming or golf, so the Tiger thing doesn't matter to me.  I prefer the NHL.

Second, the only gaming systems I have are a PC laptop and a PS2.  So, I've been hosed by EA three times this year.  NHL 09 was a spectacular dissapointment and waste of money for both of my systems.  I found out the PC version was a ported PS2 version too late, and that both versions were the same freakin' game we've been given since NHL 05, just with a roster update (incomplete update I might add).  Also NHL 10 isn't going to be made for either.  Ok, I guess that could be considered four times in one year...

EA has lost my business for a few years at least, if not permanently.

Dewiel,

Thanks for responding. I posted my comments here and at the link that you gave me. But at that link I don't see responses. But my main concern is that nobody has ever said if Madden would eventually come out for the PC this year or not. Even tough I appreciate your response it's the same response the PC community have been receiving for months. I do understand that certain steps must happen before information is released, but until more information is released this frustration will continue.

Now after saying all of that I believe now my point is kind of mute. I read what Peter Moore said about the future of EA and micro transactions. Here is the link

www.gamespot.com/.../6215298.html

Before I read this I was actually going to get (if Madden was coming also to the PC) Tiger Woods Online after playing the beta.  I thought EA did a great job. But since I only paid $40 for Madden 08 which I can play anytime I want, I won't pay $60 a year every year plus micro transactions for the same game.

Also is it true that 360/PS3 gamers must pay $10 for the 10 year online franchise mode? I've been reading that on gamefaqs.com

Let me jump into the PC gaming debate by saying that I will be participating in the Tiger Woods online product once it becomes available to the public without all of the restrictions that are currently in place.  I will be attending school in the fall so I anticpate playing a round of golf between classes and would like to show off the game to classmates without being restricted as to what I could talk about.  I will partcipate once it becomes available to everyone without restriction.  I have no intention of paying for the game.  I would pay for a disc in a store but I won't do it online.

I don't believe that you will ever be able to get the graphics quality that were achieved in the past.  I can remember when certain PC games required new graphics cards.  The games being developed by EA Sports for the PC platforms will not push the graphics as far as they can go simply because the products are going to have to support really low end graphics systems.  This does not mean that the games will not look good but they won't push the limits of computer systems as the First Person Shooters were routinely doing in the past.  See Crysis.  Actually played the game last night and was still wowed by the graphics.

I have no intention of trying the Madden PC product because I have always played football on the consoles.  The controls to me seem so much more intuitive than on the PC.  Tiger Woods golf was just the opposite for me.  I played an early golf game on the original playstation and the controls were beyond horrible.  This game was made by EA Sports so I stayed away from EA Sports golf games for the consoles until this past summer.  I played Tiger Woods on the PC and was hooked.  Last year was the first time that I missed playing golf on the PC.  I found TIger Woods 09 for the 360 in a bargain bin and decided to give it a try.  I would have preferred buying TIger Woods 09 on the PC but it wasn't being made.  I enjoyed Tiger Woods 09 on the 360 so much that I actually purchased Tiger Woods 10 for the 360 on launch day.  I haven't been disappointed.

I remember when NCAA Football and Madden first launched for the 360.  Very few actual features in the games just the core gameplay.  This is my vision for what the new PC products will look like based upon the limited information that I have about Tiger Woods Online.  I don't follow Madden on the PC so I won't comment on that product.  There won't be a club tuner on Tiger Woods online.  The Tiger Challenges won't be there.  I cannot remember the name of the mode for 10 but it won't make the PC version.  I have gotten used to these modes.  I enjoyed these features in the PC versions of the past and I am still enjoying those features in the current 360 product.  I will try out the Tiger Woods online product but I will probably return to the 360 product.

Is Peter Moore a member of the PC Gaming Alliance?

www.bluesnews.com/.../articles.pl

I keep hoping that boxed PC products will make a return to the marketplace.  The problem was originally piracy.  This was still a problem earlier this summer when the Sims 3 launched.  I support the idea of putting tools on discs to prevent piracy.

Having participated in the first two TW Online Betas, I can categorically disagree with your statement above. TW ONline pushes graphics cards across a WIDE range of GPU power and capabilities. I have played the game on my laptop with a C2D 5800/nVidia 9600 M GTS with 512 MB VRAM and the game looks and plays very well. When I play it on my desktop (C2D 6850/ATI HD 4870X2, the game is STUNNING to look at and scales very well to the higher end card. And this game is still early Alpha software.

"This is my vision for what the new PC products will look like based upon the limited information that I have about Tiger Woods Online. I will try out the Tiger Woods online product but I will probably return to the 360 product."

Since the game is still in alpha stage (adding new features every new Beta), I am not sure how you can make such claims about features that WON'T be in TW Online. I am assuming you have not participated in any of the previous Betas, so you would not be aware of the incredible response that the TWO Dev Team has been producing during these Beta test periods. Users asked for and received a number of new features and the discussions with the TW Dev Team were very open and objective and they have much more of a sense of what most users are looking for based upon the feedback.

Also, Club Tuner and Tiger Challenge have never been in TW PC.

Lastly, I believe there is a real strong intent on the part of the TWO Dev Team to take the best of what the console versions have to offer, but stay true to what the PC user community is looking for. The point I am making is that you really should not try to predict what will and won't be in TW Online as we have already been surprised at what they have been able to do during the previous Beta periods.

Tim,

Sorry to disagree with you but the Tiger Challenge was in Tiger Woods 08 released on the PC.  I have played through the modes.  This was the mode with the hexagons.  5 challenges and then you had the option of playing the pro golfer in either match or stroke mode.  It may not have been called the Tiger Challenge but it was in Tiger Woods 08 for the PC.  I just pulled out the instruction manual and it was called the Tiger Challenge.  You are right when you state that Club Tuner hasn't been on the PC.

I have gotten used to golf being played in Tiger Woods 09 and 10.  I am willing to give Tiger Online a chance but I am skeptical about whether these modes will be in the game.  My expectation for this product is that it will be a stripped down product as were the first football games for the 360.  The football games have yet to include the number of features that were included in previous generations of football games.  I will consider Tiger Online but I already like Tiger 10 and am looking forward to Tiger 11.  If Tiger Online can surpass this in game modes and general game experience then I might consider sticking with it.

The game will have decent graphics but I just don't see it going cutting edge when it has to account for the 16 mb graphics cards in laptops.  This is going to limit the graphics capability of the game in some way.

I have seen several reviews about the game so that is what I am basing my information on.  I may wrong but I may also turn out to be right.

Raczilla/Tim,

I checked out the link that Raczilla provided.

Let me just say that EA Sports is taking a risk by doing this.  They are marketing towards the hardcore gamer market and that is it.  My prediction is that the Tiger Online game will sell less than the last boxed retail version of Tiger Woods did.  Peter Moore will wish for sales figures like that when this is finished.

There is still resentment in the PC community about the decision to go away from PC.  Some of us have chosen to move on to other things and others choose to curse EA Sports at every turn.  I have chosen to move on but will give the new stuff a chance.  The measuring stick for me will be Tiger Woods 10 for 360 and what is included in TW11.  If Tiger Online can meet or beat this then you may a gain a customer for Tiger Online.  EA Sports may be the talk of the PC community if they can make this a sucess or they will be the talk of PC industry if it flops badly.  Nobody knows what will happen.

I will not be checking the blog here for about a week and a half.  I will be traveling to Southern Utah and Northern Arizona where I may/may not have access to a computer.  Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Sedona are my destinations for this next week.  Anybody who has visited these areas is jealous since they are not there.

Hey Peter,

Where is this years Head Coach? I would love to see that franchise grow.

As for Madden 2010, I am happy that the team is working in the right direction however I am upset to have a striped online franchise. I would really like to see improvements on this happen quickly.

1. Ability to upload my NCAA 2010 graduates to the online franchise.

2. Player contracts with years and terms.

3. CPU AI on trading, so we can work good trades with the CPU.

Do you have an idea when these are going to be completed and are the team working on one of these three currently?

Thanks

Nice link Chill351974. From what I've read Peter's comments seem to confirm my suspicions that they are going to charge us for as much as they can. Will somone really pay 50 cents for a better club in Tiger Woods? What's next? 50 cents to change the color of your ball?

They need to be very careful here. By charging for too many things they could push more people away than you are trying to attract. I hope that they do not go crazy with this for Madden PC. As I've said I've paid $40.00 for Madden 08 PC. If the same $40.00 gets me everything in Madden PC that I've been used to be getting thsn great. But if there are going to be substantial charges added to that then I would have to reconsider my options.

Thanks for the comments.  I agree that these are areas that a lot of people would like to see online franchise improved.  The team had to make some tough decisions about what that feature would be.  There isn't currently an ETA on the things you mention above, but I do want you to know that we are aware of the additional things fans want to see included in that mode and will continue to build on the solid foundation that was set this year.

Yes, it is a risk. And EA is a very "risk averse" company, so seeing them take this direction with TW is exciting to me personally. I will also say, that out of 6000 or so beta testers, the vast majority of testers liked the product with still very limited features due to being so early in the development process.

I also completely disagree that they are marketing towards the hardcore gamer. Heck, ANYONE can play this game ANYWHERE at ANYTIME with a wide range of PC/Mac specs. How is that targeting the hardcore gamer market only? We'll see soon enough if you or EA is right about this move with the PC version of Tiger....

I'm an old PC gamer who recently bought a PS3.  With this game, The Show, and Nhl 10, I haven't regretted the purchase.  NCAA was a major disappointment this year but hopefully it will equal Madden next year.  Thanks for an awesome Madden, hope you give those guys a raise, and really looking forward to NHL 10.  All the best.

hamilton77fan, thanks for the feedback. What would you like to see improved with NCAA Football 10?

aggiefan4life2 said:

August 22, 2009 8:24 PM

Let me respond to a few points here.  I have loved the Tiger Challenge feature of the Tiger Woods games since it was introduced.  The reason is simple.  You can play a quick round of golf as opposed to playing a full round of golf.  The Tiger Challenge for 08 could have been better if the medal ratings had meant something in terms of a challenge.  I was able to beat Tiger without completing very much of the mode.

What I mean by EA Sports only marketing to hard-core gamers is simply that.  The only people who know about the Tiger Online project are the ones who follow gaming on a daily basis.  Most of the people who are here and on the forums qualify as hard-core gamers.  The 360/PS3 products have mainstream commercials on TV running for them.  This gets the casual gamer into the stores to purchase a game.  I believe that EA Sports is underestimating the strength of their retail partners.  EA Sports couldn't send a gift card format type of product to the stores so that people could purchase it in store?  The World of Warcraft gamers go into stores to buy more minutes and credits or something.  I have never played this game so I am unsure of what they buy in the stores.  EA Sports should invest into some sort of gift cards if the microtransactions are the wave of the future.  I could go into a Best Buy and purchase 50 dollars on an EA Sports gift card to use on whatever EA Sports product that I wanted.  This would be a much more mainstream approach than directing people to a website.  Grandmas and Grandpas could give grandkids gift cards for Christmas.  EA Sports gift cards on Santa's list.  That has a good ring to it.

I seem to remember somebody on the Tiger Woods forums stating that the Tiger Online version of the game should not be compared with Tiger Woods 10.  This will be a huge selling point for me in which version I get in the future.  I am very pleased with the 360 product.  No regrets whatsoever in trying the 360 version.  I will try the free version of Tiger Online when it is available to the general public with no restrictions.  Whether I go further with the game than the free version will largely depend on how it compares with Tiger Woods 10 and what is being proposed for 11.

EAcom Golf Tim said:

It is every premature to advocate how TW Online is going to be marketed, because EA has not announced their plans publicly. They know they have to do something different than the traditional marketing of a CD/DVD based game. From what I have seen of their plans in February, I like the strategy they have for getting the mass market to at least have a good look at the game.

As far as TW Online being like the console versions, I feel there will be some sharing of assets and features, but there are many in the initial beta tests that have indicated they want a more "simulation" style of game. I am advocating that EA offer the best of both worlds with TW Online. You could have an impact on the direction of the game if you chose to participate in the beta. That is the most effective means of communicating your ideas and wishes for the game.

I like your idea about the gift cards Aggie. All of this talk of microtansactions has raised up a question:

If you purchase items/upgrades/etc via microtransactions for your 2010 title will you be able to use these same transactions for your 2011 and future titles? Or will you have to repurchase the same items/upgrades/etc for each new title every year? For example: you decide to purchase a new/better club for Tiger Woods 10. Can you still use that same club for Tiger 11? Tiger 12? Or For Madden 10, if you purchase an upgrade for a player/franchise can that same upgrade be used for Madden 11 and so on? If you have to repurchase every year with a new release they could wind up losing customers and hurting sales.

I wonder if EAS is going to go in a direction of having a core element of a title and using microtransactions as upgrades every year?

aggiefan4life3 said:

I envision the gift cards serving multiple roles and purposes.  You go to a store and you load up your card for a certain amount.  The question about the whether specific clubs, etc. would be better answered by the people working on the game.  Typically, items/features from previous games don't work on the next years product.  I don't understand why it couldn't work.  I see giftcards coming with codes that would unlock features on the consoles.

There are already Microsoft Live cards out there so I don't know if I am requesting something that has already been done.  My 360 console is currently not online.  I don't know if I buy a 10 dollar Microsoft Live card if that would allow me to purchase a ten dollar item for an EA Sports game.  I am  confused about the achievement system.  Could I buy a dynasty accelerator for NCAA 10 if I have enough achievement unlocked?

I have been playing Madden since 1995 but Madden 10 for the 360 will be my last. And this is why, I have been playing superstar mode on 15 min qt with the acc clock on 25 seconds. I also use player control instead of supersim for more realistic stats.Well I just got done playing a game that in the second qt I was on my opponent 22 yard line with 4th and 6 and the play call was punt. I called 3 time outs and took 3 5 yard delay of game  and the play call was still punt. I even tried to audible but you can't on a punt. And then in the 4 qt it was 4th and 3 on my opponent 19 yard line and the same thing happened. So I lost 18-14. Why is it that EA has time to make extra stuff for extra money but can't get the game modes that came with the game to work correct? Or do I have to buy the field goal kicking option for super star mode? You guys are incredible. What a rip off.

If microtransactions are the way of the future for EAS titles then there should be some carryover from title to title each year. I think if someone has spent time and money on their franchise/player etc they should be able to apply some of those transactions/items/features/etc in future/newer versions of that title. Maybe they could come up with some kind of player locker or vault where the transactions than can be carried over can be kept for use for future titles. This locker/vault can be tied into the player's account so they can access it via console or computer.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have some items/features still available and still charge for newer items/features and still make some money on the title?

I wonder what they at EAS think about this? Is something llke this possible?

I am finding the gameplay on Xbox LIve to be laggy.  Is this being addressed?  It's really creating problems for an enjoyable online experience.

Of course, the conversations will be happening across various pages on the new easports.com, where you can talk to development team members and ask questions as you play, get tips and tricks from the dev team, check the online play and online franchise FAQ and even post your favorite highlights.  Enjoy the game...

Cheers,

Peter

I will not be checking the blog here for about a week and a half.  I will be traveling to Southern Utah and Northern Arizona where I may/may not have access to a computer.  Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Sedona are my destinations for this next week.  Anybody who has visited these areas is jealous since they are not there.
