Peter Moore About Peter EA Support

NCAA Football in Stores, First Look at MMA and More

It’s been a busy few weeks, but we’re excited for another big launch week here with NCAA Football hitting stores tomorrow.

We’ve talked a lot lately about our products as live services, with new content and ongoing support after launch … NCAA Football is a great example of how that live support is quickly evolving to mean functionality both post and pre ship.  Consider this – we announced TeamBuilder, the new create-a-school online feature, last month at E3 as something that would allow fans to create content for NCAA Football 10 before the game had even shipped.  Now six weeks later, more than 160,000 teams have been created online and can be imported into the game beginning tomorrow.  I’ve got to admit – that’s an eye-popping number.

I was excited to see the first NCAA Football review hit today, where TeamXbox calls it “the best football game I have ever played on an Xbox” in giving it a 93. Heady praise indeed, and having seen the final build last week in Tiburon, I think you will be in agreement that the development has once again captured the passion, commitment and excitement of college football.

More news and notes from the weekend:

•    I find myself playing the beta of Tiger Online every opportunity that I get recently. The concept of playing Tiger straight from my web browser, and to be swinging the club 20 seconds after opening the site, is a blast. We are closing in on an open beta, and I will post a link to that as soon as the team is ready to scale.

•    The news on Saturday of the death of former world champion boxer Arturo Gatti hit me particularly hard. He was a great friend of EA SPORTS, appearing in each of the last two editions of Fight Night, and as all boxing fans know, he had the heart of a lion in the ring. I had the pleasure of meeting him in Miami three years ago, and he spent a couple of hours with my daughter and I regaling us with stories of his upbringing, his pre-fight regimen, and fascinating anecdotes of his great fights against Micky Ward. You were a champion in and out of the ring, Arturo, and will be sorely missed by those of us here at EA SPORTS who had the honor and privilege of working with you over the years.

•    Fk915 – yes I know the Ashes have started, and while it is impossible to watch the action over here in the US, I do follow the matches via BBC.com or Cricinfo.com. While England opened brightly on the first day, they ended up having to heroically hang on for the draw at the end. It seemed that the wicket was a bowlers nightmare at first, and while if I were the Aussie captain I might have declared an hour or two earlier, it came right down to the last wicket and what was undoubtedly a thrilling and nail biting last few overs.

•    Fight Night Round 4 continues to garner critical acclaim, with scores that put it in the top 6 percent all time for all games on the PS3 and Xbox 360. For those of you that requested the option of the button controls, I am sure you saw our announcement last week that a download enabling this would be available by September. Having played a couple of hours over the weekend with my son alternating playing as Muhammad Ali and keeping Iron Mike Tyson at arm’s length, I am a confirmed sticks guy at this point, but I also recognize many of you want the option of the buttons as well. The development team is working on this, and we’ll get this to you as soon as we can…

•    I also saw the first playable of EA SPORTS MMA while at Tiburon last week. We have a team of incredibly hardcore fans of the sport working hard and making excellent progress, and we look forward to delivering a title in 2010 that we believe will provide further focus and attention to the sport.

I know there has been some recent discussion about EA SPORTS bringing a challenger to this sport.  I love mixed martial arts, and we’ve been working on a game concept since I came to EA two years ago. I have great respect for the  organizations and individuals that have invested in the sport’s growth over the past decade – so this is one that is near and dear to me and I’m excited to see such good progress to date.  I trace my MMA video game roots back to my support of Crave’s UFC title on the Dreamcast in 2000, and have been a fan ever since. Our title will bring both innovation and further authenticity to mixed martial arts, not to mention a strong global publishing network that will help spread the sport’s popularity around the world.

Finally, wish I could have been in Vancouver today for our big fall preview event.  Media and community were joined by such stars as Venus Williams, Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic), Milan Lucic (Boston Bruins) and Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA) for previews of NBA LIVE 10, FIFA 10, NHL 10 and Grand Slam Tennis. Our EASPORTS.com team was there to bring you everything from the event.

Not UFC, no thanks. They might as well make a game for arena football or women''s basketball.

Hi Peter

I m glad to read that you are following ASHES. While T20 is the new Cricket there is still a place for test match. Its hard to see a Cricket game in North America but you can buy live streaming on www.willow.tv .... looking forward for the next ASHES test.

Cricket fans are still waiting for a Cricket game from EA. hope you will let us know once you sort out all the barriers.

I must say that FN4 is a great game ... I m excting about MMA and if you can deliever the same quality as FN4 then MMA will be a big hit. Cheers

I will provide my feedback on NCAA 10 since one week has almost passed since getting the game.  Raczilla requested that I provide feedback so here it comes.

On the NCAA forums, there were people calling for the producers heads but I won't go that far.  Sales have decreased for three years now and I don't see year 4 being much better.  Something isn't working.  The producers aren't listening to the right people.  I will let Peter make the decision about whether to change the team up.  I am in favor of shifting people around.  The current NCAA team could be shifted to work on a new Head Coach game.

One thing to ponder.  Would Peter Moore refer to a negative review for any of EA Sports games?  I won't answer that question but I think we all know that the answer is no.  No media outlet owned by EA Sports is going to say negative things about a game or an upcoming game.  The White House Press secretary isn't going to badmouth the president or make a negative comment about any policy.

The majority of you probably think that the review will be bad based upon the prior remarks but keep on reading.  Don't excited Peter.  That doesn't mean it will be good either.

NCAA 10 is a very famillar game.  It seems that the menus and interface got a fresh coat of paint but I can't tell much difference beyond that.

The ability to control how a team plays is a step in the right direction although I question why 5 to 10 facemask penalities are called when I turn on aggressive play.  I have noticed that this is not a problem when you have a more experienced team.  The game is going in the right direction for defense but the offensive part of this just doesn't fit.  I would like to see the offense set up as pass primary or run primary.  EA Sports is going in the right direction with this but there is so much further they can go with this addition.  If I play aggressive defense all the time then I should start attracting more aggressive players to fit this system.  This mode could help you establish an identity for your team and you could recruit players to fit that system.  I grew up watching a team that played very aggressive defense and was very conservative on offense so that it how I play the game.

Road to Glory was about what I expected although the playcalling seems to have changed.

I still question whether the producers were listening to the gamers.  The number 1 issue that I have seen is the absence of the division 2 schools.  I have seen many gamers bring this point up in EA Sports and in other forums.  Most of us don't understand why EA Sports is able to put these schools into the PS2 versions but four years after releasing the 360 versions they can't put it in the 360/PS3 versions.  I don't know if it is a legal issue or whatever but if EA Sports would actually provide feedback then maybe we could be more understanding.  We pay 20 dollars more for a game that doesn't do what its predecessor could?

Who the hell asked for the family mode in NCAA 10?  EA Sports actually paid somebody to develop this mode?  This sounds like a LP issue for EA Sports.  Somebody is stealing man hours from EA Sports by working on this mode or EA Sports has some really bad management.  I suspect that someone inside of EA Sports told this employee to develop this mode and that was is so sickening about the whole process.   Interview the people buying the game.  How many times do you think family mode will come up?  Less than 5 percent of the population is what I will say.

Madden appears to a great title with many improvements.  I wish EA Sports would send some of those improvements to the NCAA franchise.  Madden going to do flyovers this year.  NCAA needs flyovers.  The band concepts need a lot more research for next year.  This mode seems way too rushed.  Note to EA Sports.  Bands perform at halftime and some perform before games.  Bands also sit in the stadium.  Bands can make it more intimidating for opposing teams.  Come to Kyle Field and sit on the visitors bench with our band blaring.  Tell me it isn't intimidating to hear a 300 person military band playing in your ear.  I regularly walk with our band to footballl game and they can give you a headache easily.  Let's have some of that reflected in the game.  EA Sports might should have left the band subject alone but they decided to bring it up.

Rumor has it that the license for NCAA runs out next year and EA Sports doesn't intend to renew.  Maybe we get some truly fresh blood in for future college football titles.

Raczilla and EA Sports know where to send my feedback so I will finish now.

My morning rant/post did not include my thoughts on the DLC in NCAA Football 10.

DLC needs to be something that fans want before it can ever be profitable for EA Sports.  EA Sports hasn't learned that yet and has insulted many of its fans by suggesting such content.  This may sound great as a marketing slogan but I doubt that the extra features are going to generate much income.  I would say "A swing and a miss" but EA Sports no longer participates in baseball games.

Peter Moore - Listen up.  I am getting ready to tell you how to increase sales.  Guaranteed.

For the next version of NCAA football reduce your game price to 49.99 and offer your extra content in another version which you can call developers special/collectors edition.  Can't you see the reviews?  NCAA 11 is 10 dollars cheaper this year.

The only problem with DLC is that you are assuming that everybody's consoles have access to the internet.  My does not have an internet connection.  Patches and DLC could be put on the website for download.  I have never understood why this is difficult to do for consoles.  Gamer with a jump drive sticks jump dirve into computer and downloads.  Unplugs jump drive and sticks it into 360.  Machine recognizes that there is a patch there and installs.  How is this so difficult?

I must take back part of my review after playing the Road to Glory mode of NCAA Football 10.

It seems that EA Sports has continued their habit of taking features out of the game instead of adding new features.  The newest subtraction is that their are no longer announcers calling your Road to Glory.  I guess it goes right along with the new EA Sports marketing slogan that Peter Moore will be more than happy to promote.

The new slogan is - If its in the game then its not in our game.  I played with Auburn and not a single game was announced by the TV crew consisting of Corso and Herbstreit.

I guess it was too hard to program this into the game since it was in last years game.  It was some idiot producer's dream to have this mode displayed in a more pleasing manner so they decide to screw the mode up even more.  Please fire this moron and put him on a permanent no rehire status.  I recommend firing everyone associated with the Road to Glory game mode.

I guess we can always request for it to be put back in the game but we have been asking for 4 years for the Division 2 schools to return but EA Sports has proven that they are not committed to listening to the fans.  The results are that sales for the game have declined for 3 years now and EA Sports isn't smart enough to figure out why.

Let me follow up my previous comments with some information about my Road to Glory season.

My Auburn team made it to the SEC Championship Game and there was only the PA announcer giving his usual announcements.  I get that it would be realistic for the SEC Championship to not be televised?  Right EA Sports?  My Auburn team made it there.  I care nothing about hearing other fans say how bad Auburn will do this year in real life.  In this version of the game we made it to the championship.  We got beat by Tebow and Company but we still made it there.

I think that EA Sports has some really lazy people working on their NCAA series since they keep deleting features.  Programming a feature that was in last year's would take too much of their time.  It would take away from adding cr@p such as family mode.

I expected this game to be a letdown and it has fulfilled that billing so far.  I hope that EA Sports makes some major changes to the NCAA 11 Team because there needs to some fresh voices and talents since the current talent is getting the job done.

I am sure that Peter will come out and defend his people as usual.  The NCAA team has become really sloppy at producing a game or are just too lazy to put in the time to make sure that the game works.  No word on whether you can start a coaching career after finishing your Road to Glory.  You could when this mode was first introduced but that was taken out of the game.

I realize that this is a very negative but the idea is to wake up some of the management at EA Sports and to demand a better NCAA Football 11.  Yes, Peter.  I realize you can't talk about future products but it would be much bigger news if you decide to can the series.

Aggie,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.  I have to admit I’m a bit surprised by your comments about NCAA and the notion that fans on the forums are very unhappy.  In fact, we reached out to fans for feedback on the game and a lot of people had some very good things to say about it.  There are some great comments by our fans about things they like about the game and also things they think can be improved.  Have a look.  forum.ea.com/.../261021.page

While I did say I was looking forward to your thoughts on the game, I think a lot of what you’ve posted here is better suited to the forum where it will actually be seen by our dev team.  In one of your posts you mention commentary in Road to Glory mode.  If you’re curious about this, why not direct that as a question to the team who works on the game?  This is not something you have a chance of getting an answer to here in the blog because our dev team doesn’t post here.  They post in our forums and have spent a lot of time since launch engaging fans on our boards.

You have a lot of comments about our dev team so why not reach out to them?  You seem to have a passion and some ideas for the game but are missing out by not reaching out to the people who need to know most.  In fact just this past Thursday we had a great community playdate event where NCAA dev team members played games with the community and talked to them about their thoughts about the game.  It would have been great to see you participate.  Greg Heddlesten has also been actively answering questions daily in a Q and A thread.  You might pose your Road to Glory question to him there.  forum.ea.com/.../218567.page

I’m glad that you’re so interested in giving feedback from the game, and I want to help you get the most of it.  Peter respects and appreciates your thoughts, but game specific feedback here on the blog isn’t passed on to our dev teams.  That’s just not what the blog is for.  It’s something that’s done specifically on the forums and I hope to see you there.  You’re missing out by only posting these things here.

Raczilla,

Actually, I have posted the Road to Glory to  Greg Heddlesten's page and recieved an answer on that same day.  I do disagree with idea that ideas shouldn't be forwarded to developers from this blog.  This blog recieves very few comments as opposed to the volume on the specific forums so simply forwarding a handful of ideas doesn't seem like too much to ask.  You may also look on the Tiger Woods forums and you will see that I have been contributing ideas for the next edition of Tiger Woods on the 360.  You will also note that it was me who requested that topic be stickied so more people can put in their input.  I have been posting there on a consistent basis trying to work through a problem with that game.  I won't discuss the issue here but if you look back far enough you will see that I am indeed posting there.  I do have two different accounts due to forgetting passwords over time and every time we lose power it logs me off so I don't always select the right account.

Peter is the president of EA Sports so I want him to know when I don't like a product.  He may not be able to do much about it but he can always convey a message to the team.  I do think that Peter should understand the reasons why I a game isn't selling and NCAA Football has been on a downward spiral for at least three years in sales volume.  I notice that Peter nor anybody from EA Sports has come running out to tell me that data is wrong.  My posts here have also focused on NCAA Basketball but when I go to that forum I have yet to find a producer answering questions.  Am I to assume that the game isn't being worked on yet?  This series hasn't been a sucess since EA Sports decided to ditch the game's name.  Generally, games that sell great don't need name changes to energize their sales.  I don't know of anybody who likes the way that the DLC content was put into the game.  Peter needs to know that this isn't working.  I provided a way to increase the sales and how to reenergize the product.  2 editions of NCAA 11 doesn't seem too difficult to me.  One with the DLC included and one for 10 dollars less without the DLC.  Would that increase sales?

Buy a new pair of glasses because I have been posting on multiple EA Sports forums.  I post here because this is where I started posting with EA Sports.  There have been negative posts made to the NCAA Football forums and it will be interesting to see if anything changes for next year's game.  I followed the football games with the devlopers

Just to clarify.

My comments about DLC were related to NCAA Football not the NCAA Basketball game.
