Welcome to Peter Moore's Official Blog

In this blog you'll see what Peter thinks about sports, sports video games, and the industry in general. We hope this gives you an inside look at EA SPORTS, so please enjoy!

Peter Moore About Peter EA Support

Award Season

It's been quite a week for us around here.  No sooner did I get back from a great trip to London, where we were honored with the Grand Prix at the MCV Awards, but then on Monday in New York I'm proud to say that we were awarded, along with our great partners at ESPN, a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Technical Achievement for the EA SPORTS Virtual Playbook.

Being recognized alongside the finest in sports broadcasting for this breakthrough innovation means a great deal to us, especially as it signals real success against our vision to take the EA SPORTS brand even deeper into the greater sports landscape.

In case you haven't yet had the opportunity to see the EA SPORTS Virtual Playbook on ESPN, the technology debuted last fall and delivers "augmented reality" that allows ESPN's NFL analysts to interact in the studio with the virtual players from our 3D game engines to provide insight, education and analysis to fans about key football plays and techniques.  We've really only just begun to scratch the surface on the power of this technology, and I'm excited to see where we go in more sports in the coming months and years.

To learn more about the EA SPORTS Virtual Playbook, be sure to check out this Q&A with Jason Parker, our very talented engineer who deserves huge kudos for his vision on this project from day 1.  And of course, I'll welcome you to take a look at the great experience I had when our partners at ESPN welcomed me into the studio several weeks ago to take a spin "inside" the EA SPORTS Virtual Playbook for myself.

It would also be remiss of me not to comment on the fabulous run the Red Sox are currently on. Winning 11 of 12 has certainly made up for a slow start to the season.  Ellsbury stealing home on the Yankees and a rather befuddled Pettitte and Posada on Sunday night is the highlight of the season so far...

I'm french, I thank EA SPORTS for his games. But, I love Rugby and I wait for a game on PS3 since too long, it's my favorite sport.

Please, say me if I can hope a rugby game.

You should put the virtual playbook in Madden 10 but hey it looks cool.

The virtual playbook looks cool and I have actually seen it in use on one of ESPN's broadcasts.

I was surprised to see that EA Sports World link still worked.  I thought that EA Sports staff had abandoned using this site based upon activity or lack of activity at the development forums that Peter Moore loves to brag about.  This isn't the first time that we have commented on the lack of activity there but Peter Moore seems to conveniently avoid this topic when updating the blog.

I saw in use on ESPN as well and it is pretty amazing. Maybe we will see the technology enhanced and used in every football team's stadium. There could be EA Sport Zones where fans could go to run plays with there favorite team. Do you forsee something like this in the future Peter?

I like PlaystationMan24's idea of using it in Madden. Maybe there could be an ESPN Halftime show with one guys using the virtual playbook to show a play or two from the ongoing game.

Speaking of Madden, why not as an upgrade or enhancment to Superstar Mode, use the face capture technology used in Tiger to allow users to create a player with their own face so they feel like they are actually guiding themselves thru the superstar mode.

Just some thoughts.

This may go off-topic but I don't care at this point.

I find it odd that Peter Moore can discuss the PC platform with the internet media but refuses to address it here on his blog.  Obviously, the media means more to him than the average game who comes here looking for information.  If Peter Moore ever wins an award for communication I am going to demand that he return it immediately.

Proof that Peter Moore is talking to others?  Follow this link.  Kind of ironic that he refuses to discuss the potential options for PC gaming here but he will to first media person who asks.

EF-Hybrid,

I will one-up you here.  Here is another link of Peter Moore talking to the media.

Apparently, the way to distribute the PC games hasn't been decided yet.

Steam or DRM is my preferred method of buying any new PC game.  Online verification will be needed to combat piracy.

Peter - Here is a good time to put on your listening ears.  I am not in favor of being able to buy a game completely on-line.

Yes, we have gone off-topic.  Again, the PC game discussion is not going away until is sufficiently addressed to our satisfaction by Peter Moore.  Peter Moore made the decision to discontinue PC games and he will continue to hear our voice until they return.  The sooner he speaks the sooner we shut up about this subject.

Nice finds EF-Hybrid and Aggiefan4life2. Should be interesting to see what Peter has to say in future blogs.

Peter, You want to go after the PC gamer consumer again? Wouldn't it make sense to get some input from the PC Gamer consumers? I have seen polls and surveys from EAS so why not set one up for the PC gamers. Find out how we would like to purchase our games, what would make us purchase a game, what extras would we be willing to pay for, etc.

Wouldn't information like that help you and your teams to develope products that would be more likely to be purchased and therefore generate more sales?

Just exposing the fraud that stands behind the game announcement edition of this blog every time it is asked about the PC platform.

Can we talk about the PC platform yet or are the bloggers not good enough to be addressed by the great Peter Moore?

I think I should let everyone know something.

I've been reading these blogs for a while and I've found out if it's not all about next-gen Madden, EA doesn't care.

The Madden series on the 360 and PS3 is all that the people at EA care about and invest time and effort in.

Cricket, Rugby, NHL, everything else is just an afterthought in production after EA spends time and money on the Madden series.

BTW, they never really answer questions about anything that isn't Madden either.

Peter,

How about a development blog link for the PC developers so that we can make our ideas heard by the people making the new PC games?

You have talked about the rising costs associated with the PC platform but I just don't see it.  The discs come in the same type of packaging that the console games come in.  Support?  Tiger Woods 08 on the PC has never had a patch issued for it even though it was far from a perfect game.

The bottom line is that there needs to be some type of online verification for the new games.  Every game that is purchased can be accounted for or support will not be provided if verification is not provided.  Maybe this could be done by using cash register receipts.

I found it extremely disappointing to hear you discussing the PC platform without discussing the issue here on this forum.  We are the ones who check here daily for news about this potential new line of products.

It is time for EA Sports to show that they are listening to us.  We have complained about the development pages for Football not being used by EA Sports staff but Peter Moore hasn't responded yet.  There's a shock.  Him actually responding to a question would be a miracle.  The forums show that EA Sports is not listening so now it is time to show whether that is accurate or not.

I have to agree with some of the PC comments. I read this on gamespot today

I dont know if anybody asked yet but, is madden nfl 10 going to be released on PC and if yes its going to be a xbox 360 port. (Submitted by lucasc130 and others)

"I think [EA Sports president Peter Moore] said it multiple times… there's a lot of PCs out there. We know there's a market for a PC title, so we're looking at that experience, we're looking at the PC market, trying to design a game that would appeal to that audience, as well as solve some of the piracy issues that we see. The fact is that it just wasn't a great business for us [in the past]. So, we're looking at it and we're working on it right now and once we have a solution, we'll be sure to announce it to everybody."

Wow did Sarah Palin write that for you? I mean really wow it speaks for itself.... PC is not the only platform that suffers from piracy you can pirate Madden on Xbox as well if its hacked. I hope the PC Madden gamers dont bend and buy the console versions because they are simply sub par the controls are sloppy as hell. The PC Madden crowd has always been a different crowd and we desire a realistic game with out all the gimmicky crap that EA so loves. We want a focus on realistic gameply without bugs. If you wont release a PC version atleast allow 2k sports to do one like they did with thier phenominal basketball game for the PC. Why hold the license hostage for the PC genre, thats crap dude

Till then Ill stick to Madden 08 PC just say no to kiddie consoles.

The college basketball game produced by 2K Sports was a superior product and latest edition of March Madness/NCAA Basketball proved that EA Sports is truly not listening to their players.  It had the ability to coach a game and it also had a true career mode with the ability to hire your own staff.  We have asking for that for at least a year in the college football and basketball games but yet EA Sports is not listening.  They must be following their leader who routinely doesn't listen.  There have been a number of issues brought up on this blog and Peter Moore has responded to less than 1% of the questions asked of him.

If EA could just hire the person in charge of 2K Sports then maybe some better games would come out.  Notice that I didn't say that the games have been bad.  They just could be better.

I am currently playing the 09 360 version of Tiger Woods and experience is about the same as the PC version.  Considering that EA Sports is thinking about making this available online only then I just might purchase the 360 version again.  If I change hard drives on my PC then I will have to go through the download process once again.

It will be interesting to see when we get this information.  Will we see a new year before this information comes out?  I would venture to say yes based upon the way EA Sports is communicating with us on this subject.

I can see how some might be turned off by offering an online only version of a title. Peter, you say that the disc sales aren't working for you well how about this suggestion?:

You sell the pc title(s) online in whichever way you choose and when purchasing a title you say for an extra $5 or so, for those interested,  you can purchase a copy of that title on a cd/dvd for backup/restoring purposes. The extra charge would cover shipping & handling, cd/dvd costs. You would only have to create the cd/dvd's as needed while still selling the pc titles online. And if you're still worried about piracy, copyprotect the cd/dvd so it can't be copied.

Remember Peter, while there are those who buy online, there may those who prefer not to and do not like to give out their credit card and other info. So when you are coming up with ways to offer your pc titles you need to think about that as well. And saying they're out of luck is not, in my opinion, good business sense.

We can be full of good ideas Peter. You just have to want to hear them.

To EF, aggie, Sang and my fellow PC enthusiasts,

I thought you might find this interesting. It's a quote from EA's earnings call by John Pleasants, EA's Chief Operating Officer and President - Global Publishing.

"In terms of distribution, with the way we look at a lot of what’s happening in the future is we’ve got probably about a billion PCs that are out there in the world. There’s probably over a billion flash installs that are out there. Very rapidly, the PC is becoming the largest gaming platform in the world -- just not in a packaged good format. And as you look at what that means in terms of distribution of product, we think it’s incredibly exciting because it’s going to open up the market to new demographics, new countries, and new types of game play and again, as John emphasized, we’ve been investing in that for years now and this is the year where we turn to profitability and start putting the pedal down, so we remain aggressive and bullish in that area. "

It's kind of interesting that the costs for EA doubled during the year that PC games weren't made.  They weren't made by EA Sports.  I don't think it is good to completely abandon the traditional method of distributing games.  I would like to see the option of having the game available via packaged and online.  The main thing is that there needs to be piracy controls.

Peter Moore cited support costs in the referenced interview.  Let's get this straight.  Support costs will immidiately drop to zero because of online distributiion.  I guess that EA Sports will not have anyone answering phone or e-mail problems after the magical jump to online-only distribution.  I will be purchasing Tiger Woods 2010 for the 360 platform if Tiger Woods PC is online-only.  I prefer to have a physical disc in hand.  Translation for Peter Moore.  EA Sports will lose a PC gamer because of this practice.  Online-only distribution will result in sales that are lower than the traditional methods.  Spore sold over 2 million copies and the majority of that came from packaged goods.  It was a kick-a$$ game with an online component which enhanced the gameplay experience.  It was not necessary to be online to play the game.  I know because I had internet problems during that period.

The 360 and PS3 distribution methods are extremely similar to the old way of distributing games.  The problem is the piracy.  Online verification is the only way to combat this.  Make users connect to the internet to activate the game.

It would be nice if Peter Moore would address the issues directly to this forum.  Nobody said that you have to give away EA's top secrets plans in the process.  Speak to us the way you have speaking to the media.

The PC gamers are not going away the way you want us to.  This edition of the blog has gone way off-topic but that's OK because it was a boring topic to begin with.  Actually showing us how this technology will used in the football games would be more effective.  It is impressive to see it in action but there is only so much you can about it.

Peter wont get an award for time keeping! Does he even read the comments made? I wonder..... anyway, lets get on with it. 4 march 2008 Peter Moore CEO EA Sports said that we should keep an eye out for Cricket and Rugby on the gen consoles, during a ps3 magazine interview. WELL PETER its a year later what is soon in your books?? If EA has not realised the growth that rugby has shown in recent years and the rediculous amount of gamers through out europe and the Sanzar unions who are going crazy with suspense just to hear ANYTHING regarding the rugby game (even Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon did a Hollywood movie about rugby), then EA simply dont deserve the right to even mention the word rugby! I understand that rugby wont reach the sales figures of Fifa, Madden, Tiger Woods or other american sports do, but you cant tell the rugby public that a game is coming soon and then leave us hanging for a year. I mean a 09 and 10 range was launched for all major sports except rugby. Just to add, and I hope you read this Mr. Moore, that rugby 08 was a total failure in regards to research and updates on players and player stats. What will it take to say yes we are working on rugby and you can expect it around june 09(for example) or we have decided that the rugby series was not profitable for us and decided stop developing rugby games. C'mon Peter the rugby community deserves a little MOORE than that!!! Inform us whats going on.

Get to the back of the line, Rugby. PC issues and Cricket were here first...   hehe...

I'm expecting the next blog to be something around the launch of EA Sports Active. Any takers?

EF-Hybrid said:

The next update will not address Cricket or the PC issue.  That is my prediction.

Sadly, it will probably talk about how many games Liverpool has played or how many they have practiced.

I am trying to decide between Tiger Woods for the 360 or Tiger for the PC so it would be nice to have some information to make a decision.  Some information before the launch of the game would be amazing.

The secret is already out of the bag.  Start talking about how this new platform is going to work.

I can save EA a lot of money.  Fire the idiot that came up with these rules for when employees can talk about things.  I know that person is overpaid because I wouldn't pay a penny for what they have done.

Peter must be auditioning for the new Karate Kid movie.  They are bound to be making one.  Hollywood seems to have a habit of cr@ping on old movie ideas.

Does EA know that he is moonlighting?  Or attempting to moonlight?

This is what I've learned through my dealings with EA and EA customer service/support.

EA does not care about their customers that aren't asking about Madden!!

EA does not care about customers that play on anything that isn't a 360 or PS3!

EA just doesn't care!

Don't waste time asking questions.  Don't waste time in the forums.  Don't waste time in line at the game store or online purchasing an EA product.  You will be happier giving your business and hard earned money to a game company that cares.  Trust me on this one.

I'm willing to lay off on the cricket issue for a while now cause Codemasters have announced 'Ashes Cricket 2009', set to be released next month, just before the start of the Ashes. Thank goodness there's some people out there realising that cricket will become hugely popular during this English summer and therefore the time is right to release a cricket game. It's going to be PS3, 360 and PC with a Wii version releasing a little later in the year... I can't wait!

EA Cricket I would still prefer but this will do me nicely for now!

Mr. Moore, please either bring the Madden and NHL franchises back to the PC (and not some watered down browser version) or resign.  It's not the PC gaming market that's dying - it's EA Sports' PC division that is.  You can't just keep releasing a sub-par product and then blame the market.  So please, just go away and let someone who knows what they're doing take over.
