Welcome to Peter Moore's Official Blog

In this blog you'll see what Peter thinks about sports, sports video games, and the industry in general. We hope this gives you an inside look at EA SPORTS, so please enjoy!

Peter Moore About Peter EA Support

Your Feedback is Appreciated

It was great to see the passion and level of detail in your comments on Monday's post featuring the first screenshot of Madden NFL 10. Rest assured that the development team reads every one of these posts, and while we can't guarantee we can integrate all of your requests into the game each year, we really appreciate the feedback. Keep it coming. For more detail, I'd invite you to read the detailed new blog post from art director Mike Young with more details about this screenshot and more about the visual presentation in this year's Madden.

I also want to tip my hat to my friend Curt Schilling, who announced his retirement from baseball yesterday after 23 spectacular years. He now becomes a rookie again, this time in the video game business, as he and his team at 38 Studios continue to build their impressive MMO, codenamed Project Copernicus.

Finally we have another videoblog segment to share. Below is more from my conversation with Nate Lundy a couple of weeks ago before our Season Opener.

Bloody Americans don't care about including the question: When will the next EA cricket game be released? That's been the main question on your blogs Peter!

Peter, I typically ask about PC gaming and EA's direction for the platform (cough cough Madden).

With the recent demo of OnLive and the potential for using cloud computing for gaming while delivering HD content to essentially a dumb terminal over broadband, do you see EA taking advantage of this going forward. Perhaps marrying some of the advantages of cloud computing power for servers for leagues and other full content collaborative gaming applications with the potential of the current PCs or consoles. (MMORPG for sports!?!)

Could you give an update on some current or future technology that EA is looking at down the road?

Thanks as always!

peter,

about madden 10 i am super excited bout this madden and i was thinkin bout some minor things that could be imporved.

for instance, take some things from ncaa 09 like the new dna helmets. also for the superstar mode bring back the apartments and mansions it made it a little more exciting. another thing, in franchise mode u have to move cities in order to build a new stadium you should consider being able to make a new stadium in the same city. besides that i have to say great job and great first look.

wolfie95 said:

One of the biggest improvements needed (in my mind) is the crowd. Madden would be much more intense if the fans in the stadium really got into it. If the stadium gets loud, it should affect the game like it does in the NCAA games.

Let me echo the request for more information on the PC platform.  Can we get a listing of what games are going to be released for this platform?  I am interested to see some of the innovative techniques that we were outlined in the original PC post here on this blog.  This would be the blog that said that the PC platform was discontinued.

It is hard for me to believe that a game (TIger Woods 2010) will be released in June and EA Sports doesn't know if it going to be released on the PC or not.  A yes or no answer is all that I want.  Clearly the communications issues that Peter Moore keeps talking about haven't been resolved since users keep asking about Cricket and PC platform and no answers have been provided.

I know that Peter Moore will hate to see this but EF has returned to the Peter Moore blog just so that we can keep Peter Moore.  The reason for my absence has been my password.  I forgot my old one so I created a new account.

John Riccitiello (CEO of EA) has stated that the Wii should be a focus for EA to return to profitability.  Why in the world would EA Sports abandon this market?  They gave NCAA football one year to make it on the Wii and then they decide to pull the plug on the series?  Please note that I don't own a Wii but it is on my list to get in the near/distant future.  If I decide to purchase a Wii, I will want to be able to play my favorite franchises on this platforms.  The gameplay may be so great that I may never play football on another platform again.  I started playing NCAA football on the Playstation and now I play it almost exclusively on the 360.  I have a PS3 which I received for free and I have tried NCAA 09 on the PS3 which isn't near as good as on the 360.

The only good news to all of this is that Peter Moore is probably ticking off the CEO of EA so maybe we can get somebody in here who can actually communicate effectively with the users of this blogs instead of 1000 questions and an update twice a month to talk about the pet rugby team or whatvever the hell is played in Liverpool.  Ticked off CEO of EA should equal a new head of EA Sports so we should all have our fingers crossed on this one.

I am also interested in knowing the plans for the PC platform.  Give us an update of what we can expect in the future for this platform.

Peter - Answer my trivia question for me.  Is it true that Tiger Woods originally released on the platform before expanding to the consoles?  I honestly don't remember but I think that is true.

Anyway, EF is back to keep you in line.

That is all.

Peter or anyone who can give me an official answer... on the website Game.co.uk, the UK's biggest console shop, there is a game listed under XBOX 360 games entitled 'Ashes Cricket 2009', due for release in July. Is this anything to do with EA?

Hey Peter...it would be nice if you added a "view your friends game option" while they a playing online in Madden games?  Just a thought?  You could let players decide if they want it turn on or off during game play.  Or make it for friends only, open to anyone or private?  Could be a nice feature to add to Madden. I can be reached by email if you wnat to dicuss this idea.

I would like to make a suggestion for a game. I am big on liking head coach 09 it great. I even own the first head coach game. I like madden 09 along with ncaa football 09. what i am trying to say i like football games but one game I would like to see is a college head coach football game. Their are lots of college football fans out their more so then NFL football fans. I believe that game would sell better then Head coach would. I hope that you might expand the game horizon and make a college head coach soon. Well thank you for your time hope you might like the idea.

EF-Hybrid said:

March 29, 2009 4:09 PM

I would also like to see a College football or basketball game based off of the Head Coach franchise.

I would like to see the college franchises incorporate more of a career mode and the ability to make game changing decisions during a game.  In basketball does putting in the young freshman guard who has been a backup all year translate into victories for a basketball team?   A backup who could lead his team to victory could become the hero and no longer have backup status.  This is the drama that could unfold with this type of mode.

I have supported the idea of a NCAA Head Coach game for a long time now and still believe that this concept would work if given the chance.

That is all.

Dear Peter,

Remember how you wondered a while ago why FIFA 09 was not in the top 50 ? I was

surprised as well, it was a major step forward and such a blast. 6 Months later

down the line and im still playing almost daily every night (the 1-2 hours i

have being a dad nowadays :). and boom along came .... FIFA Ultimate Team.

Now, being frustrated myself by performance issues and major bugs i can not help

to think about one simple issue. One that so many companies tend to forget. Now,

if i play a tournament and i win and on the the next screen it hangs (no button

respons). it is sad but hey i am cool. *** happens. Now this happens every

time!... hmmmm, one starts to wonder. this was not an accident. this is a flaw.

Now every product goes through this ... i am all fine with that but what i would

like to come to is communication. Why do I have to hit my head against a stone

which clearly has been lying around there for some time. After browsing the

forums i realise that there are many people out there with bruises ;) and i get

sad. Sad because nobody warned me about the stone !

I ask you. Where is the ingame screen that looks like this

Latest Information!

We have identified the following issues that may comprimise game play:

When playing club tournaments, you cant progress in a club tournament due to no

button respons. Status: Reported under investigation. Temporary solution: Avoid

club tournaments for now. ETA Fix: within 7 days.

No need to go online. Go through 5 million post to actually find out that the

whole world has an issue with this. The popup or info or login screen tells it

all. No need for me to replay 4 games, get the same error, lose 4 contracts on

each player. get no cash, waste a lot of time. Frustration... all

that could be so easily avoided. So basically it comes down to respect. There is

no shame in acknowledging something is wrong. Having the guts to make a small

screen stating the problems that exist. (Now for more than 10 days in the

running). Being able to share bugs shows the sign of a BIG guy. Do that and i

tell you will get my respect and that of millions others.

Communication is the key to your success. Idenitfy the problem, communicate the

problems and then let the people fill the forums with why it takes so long :). Till

then the bitterness remains. I get mad when frustration happens that could

easily be avoided. I get mad knowing that new fifa fans are hopping on the

bandwagon and have to hit their heads against the same stone.

As Frasier would say "Thank you for listening". Signed: "Shampoo Cowboy" (XBOX360)

Here is an idea that goes along with the NCAA Head Coach possibilities.  Historic coaches?  What would have happened if Bo Schembechler had left Michigan to become head coach at Texas A&M or another school?  This actually goes right along with history because Texas A&M did offer its head coaching job to Bo Schembechler.  I don't recall the date but it did happen and as we all know he didn't accept the offer.  Maybe this could be a cool cheat feature in a game like NCAA Head Coach.  Name your coach a historic name and you get really high stats.  Maybe I'll to pull the Head Coach 09 game and type in Tom Landry and see if I get a good team.

Any NCAA head coach game needs to be launched at a different time than NCAA 2010.  They are competing against each other if they launch at the same time.  Launch NFL Head Coach now so that it doesn't launch against Madden.

Madden 10, can you please improve sideline and endzone catches and keep receivers inbounds there should be real tightroping of the sideline. Maybe you'll copy the superbowl winning catch. The lineman needs to hold blocks and lay defenders down in run game for it to be more realistic and effective.

Im a little dissapointed in the amount of National teams EA added to FIFA 09. I used to always buy FIFA games because I can choose Costa Rica (my national team). I think that what EA should do is start adding "add ons" for every country including that countries clubs. I know I would be willing to pay for that and I'm sure other people that don't have their country on the National teams roster would pay to. I'm dissappointed that all they have for CONCACAF is Mexico and the US. Like I stated before, EA used to have all of the countries, even CUBA!! So please if you are out there and listening, creat this add on for countries not included, including their clubs. Pro Evolution Soccer has all of the national teams just like you guys used to have. Please contact me and inform me if this sounds like something you guys at EA will be doing or interested in doing. My email is carloscornejo87@hotmail.com

aggiefan4life,

Very well said as usual.  Does Peter Moore answer any questions or does pick the really easy ones to respond to?  Tiger Woods launches in June and EA Sports can't confirm whether this will released on the PC or not?!

All are good questions but we will never get answers as long as we visit site.  All we can do is hope that EA puts a new president in place who can actually provide information to the gamers.

I guess any information has to remain top-secret until then.

Since the incompetent head of EA Sports refuses or doesn't know how to provide information, I will provide information that some readers have been asking for.  Madden 2010 doesn't look like it will be released for the PC platform.  I would expect EA Sports to provide some information since has been requested but I have for information about the PC versiion of Tiger Woods at 3 times now and the idiot running EA Sports doesn't know how to say yes or no to this question.

Don't count on playing either game in the near future since EA Sports is choosing to sit on the sidelines and the info is way too sensitive to discuss.

So, why is Madden 10 on the PS2 and NHL 10 is not?

EF-Hybrid said:

April 1, 2009 4:52 PM

There is more demand for Madden then there is NHL.  Madden is the biggest launch of the year for EA Sports.  NCAA 10 will also be on the PS2 for the same reason.  I haven't looked at the features for either title but they probably don't have all of the features that the 360/PS3 versions have.

The bottom line is that EA Sports can make money on the football games but if they released NHL for the PS2 then will lose money.  There is simply more demand for the football titles.  More people live in areas where football is.  I live in Texas and hockey doesn't have much of a presence here.  I can't think of a High School or College in Texas that has a hockey team.  Hockey is in the minority here.  Football is king here and that won't change anytime soon.

PS2 games are dying.  They are not high quality titles anymore.  Gamers want to see great graphics and the PS2 simply can't render the same quality that the 360/PS3 can.  PS2 console prices are being slashed.  Get used to seeing more PS2 titles being cut in the future.  PS2 is gaming's past not it's future.

MY curiosity lies not with the graphics update or roster updates etc, but if Madden will incorporate the use of Sony's Playstation Home and Trophies into this new game. I think it would be great if while playing madden, I could unlock Jerseys and Hats of my favorite NFL team in home for use with my avatar, with an option to buy the other team items if I so chose. I want to feel that buy buying Madden, i'm not just rewarding EA and the NFL, but that they feel that their Product is worth my repeat service. I think Peter Moore has done a great job at EA SPorts, but I don't want any company trying to rape me for every micro-transaction dollar they can get

"Quote: Peter Moore"

We're hitting the real sweet spot of development for this generation of consoles as the team is really hitting its stride in squeezing every ounce of power and capability from the hardware.

My question to you Mr. Moore is "which hardware".  Certainly you can't make that claim for the PS3 because you have yet to tap the potential of the 50GB ceiling that Bluray has to offer, so you must be referring to the limitations of the XBOX 360 which provides me the segway to a second question for you.

Is it not true that the reason why you wont tap into the true potential of the PS3 is because you don't want to upset Xbox 360 fans.  PS3 has pretty much established itself as  superior gaming console for sports.  Take one look at MLB 09: the show.  Mr. Moore, if you continue to hamstring the PS3 by not utilizing the 50gb space afforded by Bluray and give us PS3 owners the game we deserve, then please have the decency to allow Sony to produce a Football game for us PS3 owners.

I for one Mr. Moore am tired of having to play portovers from an inferior console in that of Xbox 360.

Thankyou.

LandoKiwi5 said:

April 3, 2009 3:56 PM

I agree with BLTZ, but for another reason.  I just want the 360 users to feel like the PC and PS2 users do now.  If the 360 users don't like it, they can "just upgrade".  From what I've heard (not experienced) it's sooo easy in today's economy to come up with a few hundred for a game system.

I am really excited about what I have seen thus far with the options you guys have added to the game.  I think the main thing you guys are doing a good job of this year is actually listening to the consumers' input.  It seems like each year you get the game, it is good, but, there is something is missing.  Here is my list of things I would like to see:

GAME PLAY

The O-Line and D-Line should actually have an effect on the outcome of the game.

- The majority of football is determined by offensive and defensive linemen.  The elite defensive linemen could never be blocked in a one on one situation.  And sometimes they do actually get sacks or penetration into the backfield.  I think either this year or next year, there should be an overhauled linemen engine.

Slow the game down a bit.

- The game is like watching an instant replay on fast forward.

You should be able to throw fade routes and jump balls.

- As it stands now, bigger receivers with their speed in the 80's are useless.

You should be able to see the whole screen on pass plays.

On the older consoles, you were able to adjust different packages into the game aside from the ones you can toggle on the play selection screen.

FRANCHISE MODE

- There should be more correlation between NCAA and Madden.

- I play both games, and there should be some type of carry over between the two.  There should be something in the scouting report where you could see the player's stats, whether or not they were All-Americans, etc.

- There should be some benefit to hiring a good scout staff and coaches.  Teams should get a better scouting report if they hire a good staff, and vice versa.  There should be some benefit to trying to better your team.

- There should be a way to workout players before the draft (whether its the cpu or manually).  ie  Pro Days, the Combine, etc.

- There should be position coaches and an expanded roster (scout team/practice squad) to develop players.

- Player's morale should effect whether or not they re-sign with the team, whether they are traded, if they effect other player's morale, etc.

- Trading future draft picks

- The CPU controlled teams should actually try to make their teams better, whether it be by trading, free agency, hiring coaches, etc.

- You should be able to convert drafted/existing players to fit your needs/system. ie Shawn Merriman, TJ Suggs, Brad Smith, etc.

- The coaches (not the team you choose) should effect your playbook.  ie the Bears and Bucs are Cover 2 teams because of their coaches, not because they are the Bears or Bucs.

- You should be able to find some "gems" in the later rounds.

- Bring back: player progression after the pre-season and during the season

     training camps before the pre-season

     position battles

-There should be a universal system tor determining attributes.  ie I drafted a DE and a WR that ran a 4.35 and for some reason the DE's speed and acceleration were slower.

EA Sports has done a great job on FIFA 09 for the PS3.  It is close to perfect.  That being said I would like to see the following changes made to FIFA10.

1)  In the arena area at the start of the game add a four person wall when practicing free kicks.

2)  Also in the arena have a team practice for scoring off corner kicks.

3)  I would also like to see you guys switch the corner kick view back to the FIFA08 setup.

Again, I love the game and keep up the good work!

Here goes..for years now..(since 06) I have been a part of the so-called "10%" of Non-BCS School alumni that have been blogging about bringing back what was a staple of the last-gen NCAA games..I'm talking about FCS Schools. Not just Applicaian State..but also HBCU (Historical Black Colleges and Universites) Mr.Moore..we play football too...pretty *** good football..and all along the east coast which is dominated by the Big East, ACC and SEC we have competed and survived for generations. I'm talking about conferences like the MEAC, SWAC, and even Div II Conferences like the CIAA. You have a strong consumer base for EA products on HBCU campuses..for both Madden and NCAA...but it is a shame that for as powerful a system as the XBOX 360...EA has chosen to turn its back on many of the conferences that have produced many of the legends of the NFL...who am I speaking of you might ask...well let me run a few HALL OF FAME players who played for HBCU's...Mel Blount, Rayfield Wright, Buck Buchannon, Willie Lanier, Herb Adderly, "Bullet" Bob Hayes (goes in the Hall this year FINALLY) Walter Payton, and soon to be Hall of Famers...Doug Williams and Jerry Rice...these schools produced many of what have become icons in the sport of football...when will there alma maters be represented in your product????????. I have read some post of the 2010 game and there are gamers that still are asking for these schools...the last two NCAA seasons have produced upsets by non-BCS schools...on the road and some on national television...why can't we be represented on your game as well???.

Come on Peter show some guts, just be honest...it's really not that hard!!

Chitaitai said:

May 7, 2009 6:52 AM

Hi Peter,

Please allow me to cut straight to the chase.

Speaking from a PC gamer's experience, I think that we are being short changed by EA sports. Firstly, because FIFA09 and its predecessors are so unrealistic compared to PS3 and XBox 360 versions. The movement of the characters (players) in the PC version is really upsetting to say the least because everyone can clearly see that their movement is blatantly trying to and succeeding in giving the CPU the advantage. Defenders run over the ball in the 18 area, they drop far back inexplicably while chasing a goal bound striker and they make circles as they approach the opponent.

Secondly, there is severely limited functionality on the FIFA09 computer game. One cannot adjust the formation as specifically as one can do on Xbox for instance. Also, one cannot choose to go into an ‘all out attack’ or ‘all out defense’ mode.

In my opinion, the PC version seems like an afterthought of the PS3 and XBox versions. This makes me think that there is perhaps a conspiracy to drive PC gamers to consoles. If this is the case, then EA sports, by developing sub-standard versions of the game for PC, is reducing the level of interest in its games in many people (PC gamers) in my opinion.

In have seen that there is a movement towards merging PC and XBox games using the wireless Windows controller. This, in my opinion is a really great idea. However, it also seems like an afterthought. I recently bought myself an XBox controller for PC and discovered that not many of its buttons can be programmed to the use that one wants from it. Apart from that, every time I press two buttons at the same time, the game pauses – another infuriating aspect of EA sports FIFA09 PC gaming. Either not enough thought was put into developing the controller or my controller is faulty. I however, thing that my latter speculation is the correct one since I have since returned my controller to the supplier and I have been waiting for it for over six weeks now.

Please dedicate more time to developing more realistic, more functional and more playable FIFA PC games. And please, ask the South Africa FIWC (FIFA Interactive World Cup) organizers to use a better big screen for next year’s tournament.
