Welcome to Peter Moore's Official Blog

In this blog you'll see what Peter thinks about sports, sports video games, and the industry in general. We hope this gives you an inside look at EA SPORTS, so please enjoy!

Peter Moore About Peter EA Support

Learning From World of Goo

Well sports fans, I hope you had a great weekend watching the NFL's conference championship games.  Be honest, how many of you predicted the Arizona Cardinals - the Arizona Cardinals?!? - would be in the Super Bowl?  Keep an eye out later this week for our official Super Bowl simulation, where we predict the winner of Super Bowl XLIII using the Madden game engine.  Of course, this one is worth reading, since we've correctly predicted the winner five of the past six years ... don't even get me started about last year, and don't blame our game for that one!  We'll make our announcement by the end of the week, but in the meantime let me know who you like between the Steelers and Cardinals. By the way, as a Cal fan who followed DeSean Jackson's career at Berkeley, I was delighted to see him have yet another strong game yesterday, even if it was in a losing cause. He had a brilliant 4th quarter TD catch, he's a great friend of EA SPORTS, and of course he was on the cover of the PS2 version of NCAA Football 09.

Meanwhile, as fun as yesterday was watching two great games, my eyes will be peeled an important game at Anfield today, with Liverpool taking on Everton, our rivals from across Stanley Park. I have not seen the team selection yet, but if Rafa does not play both Torres and Keane together up front then I fear we are tempting fate against what will be a very determined Everton team who have had a tremendous run of late.

Before we close the door on one of the lively discussions that was breaking out here over the past couple of weeks, I want to come clean on my promise to play World of Goo.  While I do have a day job, I had to at least download the demo and have a hand at the game before I moved on (trust me, I have pictures to prove it coming soon).  By every admission, I am more of a sports guy and this isn't my default cup of tea, but there's a ton to admire in something so simple, yet full of impressive physics that make for an elegant and somewhat addictive experience (even in the demo!).

You've heard me talk for some time now about making our games more approachable and of our need to deliver more compelling direct to consumer experiences.   There's a lot to learn from the EA alumni who started 2D Boy and built something as creative and unique as World of Goo, with such a small team and little money.  It's that type of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit that can really drive innovation, and I'd like to think we're setting the right priorities and taking the right steps to deliver more experiences in this vein from EA SPORTS.

As such, it's been encouraging to see the feedback on a few of our newest projects coming in the next couple of months.  While we may have more than two or three people working on them, they are a far cry from what it takes to make a new Madden or FIFA, yet still a ton of fun and hitting the market at a time on the calendar when, in years past, we had little shipping as we geared up for the start of many of the major sports seasons in the summer and fall, and with them our annual simulation products.

Yet in the next three months, we'll launch 3 on 3 NHL Arcade, a $10 downloadable game that's already one of ESPN's most anticipated new games of the year and a blueprint for many more inexpensive, approachable, and downloadable experiences from EA SPORTS in the year ahead; NASCAR KART Racing, the first of at least three EA SPORTS products that will be either exclusive to, or lead with, the Wii in 2009; and the EA SPORTS Complex, launching for free this spring on PlayStation Home.  I also know many of you await our plans on PC this year, and I think there are learnings here as well, beyond just downloads for console gamers, for going online to deliver compelling experiences to the PC community as well.

If you have any plans to be in Montreal this weekend for the NHL All-Star game, be sure to stop by and get your hands on 3 on 3 NHL Arcade.  Our producers will be there demoing it for fans.  And, of course, if you want to lob in your predictions for the Super Bowl, be my guest.  I'll have to wait and see what Madden tells us before I start placing any friendly wagers...

Cheers,

Peter

P.S. And thanks to Megan from D3 for the copy of Bangai-O Spirits. I look forward to playing that on my next extended airplane journey.

It's good to hear that you have plans for the PC this year. I will be interested in hearing what they are when you have more information about them. I have some more suggestions if you decide to expand your fan/developer interaction:

When someone makes a suggestion or has an idea that makes it into a game why not give them credit in the game or a discount(i do not know if you would give free game. That's up to you.) on a future version or both? If more than one person makes the same suggestion or idea make a contest out it and draw a name from that group for the credit or discount.

Since you can't use every idea or suggestion given you how about having a Top Ten list or however many you think is good for a title for each cycle(year) and have the fans vote on which top ten or so they would like to see in that year's game. Put those in the game for that year and the rest can be voted on and used for future versions.

Just some suggestions that could help stimulate the interaction between the fans and EAS. What do you and the Devs think?

Way to learn from your people after they left for greener pastures.  Are people who quit EA really considered alumni? How about the recent departures? "Don't worry guys it isn't just a layoff, it's a graduation."

Much of the criticism aside, it's refreshing to see top management acknowledging indie games. Well deserving indie games, I might add. Cheers Peter. :)

World of Goo is not my cup of tea either (I got bored after 5 min)....and quite frankly there is plenty of creative and  innovative games out there made by independent developers...just have a look at some stuff:

Anyway Peter...I am not bothering you with the usual rugby rant...Qui tacet, consentire videtur...maybe you are indeed developing a new rugby game, why wouldl't you make any comment on it otherwise??

P.S.

Liv- EVe 1-1, fair result of a fairly good game. Ah i think i am heading over to madrid to wath the  CL game in a few week!!!

One more thing about your last comments Peter,

Is it really worth spending money for this NHL 3 on 3 Arcade...i mean i still play NHL94 on line thanks to some people that run a fantastic web site!!

This NHL3v3 seems nothing new to me. But i suffer from frequent deja vu since i started playing videogames back in 1979 when i was 5.....

Still i would love to see a rugby arcade 7v7...yes i know i broke my promise not to talk about rugby....

@ Pete and Ian

So I finally caved in and rented Madden 2009 this weekend in preparation for the conference title games.  To my surprise I thought the game was an upgrade from previous two editions (anything is an upgrade from Madden 2007 for the next gen gaming systems).  The controlled end zone celebrations were nice touch, the stadium layouts seemed to be very accurate, and the overall game play was relatively enjoyable.  However, I do think that some elements need to be fine tuned before you release Madden 2010.  I believe that ultimately the qb mechanics need to be reworked.  One problem I have with the qb mechanics has to do with the manner in which the football leaves the qb's hand.  The best evidence of this problem can be seen when you perform a replay of a given play.  If you take note of the qb's throwing motion in a replay you can clearly see the qb completes his follow through before the ball takes flight.  This motion capture makes it seem as though the ball flies out of the qb's shoulder pad rather then the qb's respective throwing hand.  Also, I feel that the football itself should be downsized to look like it actually fits in the quarterbacks hand.  Making the football smaller would give the allusion of a more realistic release and make the football have more volocity when it leaves the qb's hand and look less like the qb's are throwing beachballs at their targets.   Two other aspects I feel need to be simplified are the pre-snap adjustment screens and player attribute symbols.  The pre-snap adjustment screens are often so sophisticated that hitting a button by mistake can cause a great deal of confusion prior to the snap and the attribute symbols only clutter the screen making it difficult to tell which player on the defensive side of the ball is the highlighted player.  Another aspect that needs to be fixed is the inability to put D-line players that are traded from 4-3 schemes to 3-4 schemes in as outside line backers rather then down linemen.  A side from these minor adjustments I also think when db's and wr's first intercept or catch the pigskin that sometimes they should hold the ball with two hands and cradled it from shoulder to shoulder while running before tucking the ball away or palming it with one hand.  Finally, I think that towels should be introduced to the players uniform and options like unbuckled chin straps, high and low socks styles and different cleats brands should be taken into consideration

For NASCAR Kart, could EA include music that does not suck?  Watching the preview videos, the horrible hard rock sound that came pouring out of my speakers really squelched what enthusiasm I had for the game.  Let the music be as playful as the graphics.  Not some Excite Truck, headache inducing noise.  Thank goodness that game would play my own music off of the SD card.

Mr. Moore,

If 'World Of Goo' shows us anything, it's that most game companies carry tons of employees that are are extremely clever and talented, only these individuals are rarely get the chance to  show the full extent of their talent. Most of the time they'll assume one role and get work on  one specific part of one specific title. Now, they'll do as best of a job as they can within this framework, but it still keeps them from generating many great and potential groundbreaking games ideas .

tWith a unique title such as Henry Hatsworth, something tells me EA is on the right path. Still, if there's one thing to learn from World Of Goo, it's that sometimes the greatest treasure is right under your nose.

Peter,

Let's here an update on NCAA Baseball or on baseball in general or are EA Sports baseball fans screwed.  We would like to see a good baseball game with goregous views of the stadiums and a game with good controls.  Let me second EF who has been requesting a strategy-based baseball game.  Maybe you can give us a good arcade game since you no longer have the MLB License.  This should free you to do more with the game since you are constrained by limitations of the license.

Let me provide you some names to draw influence from.

Out of the Park Baseball - stats lovers dream here.  The ability to micromanage minor leagues, team, stadium, etc.

Baseball Stars - Largely an arcade game with ability to purchase new players with money made from baseball games.

Bases Loaded Series - I don't remember a lot about this series other than it was always decent.  I found the controls to be clunky with this game.  This would be something to avoid in a new baseball game.

Let me respond to Colin Da Prince.  There appears to be a communication issue here.  Tiger Woods 09 was made by EA Sports for the last season.  It took the year off from the PC.  The incompetent idiot running EA Sports refuses to tell us if this game is returning despite numerous requests for this information.  I am sorry that I am having trouble comprehending the issue with Tiger Woods.  Are you upset that it is being made or do you not want it made?

Peter Moore - Get back to us regarding baseball in the EA Sports.  Ignoring customer questions will not make them go away.

Why did EA come out with a 3 on 3 NHL arcade game instead of fixing the bugs, gliches, and cheating in NHL 09?  Why did EA spend more time creating a 3 on 3 arcade than they did creating the PC and PS2 version of NHL 09?

Mr. Moore, is EA really that hard up for an extra ten bucks from their consumers?  Not to mention not all of the players can access the 3 on 3 arcade.

Is this how the NHL fans will be treated from now on?

The "instead of fixing what we have, we'll just pump you for more money" business model of video game production.

I worked with you on the X06 project in Barcelona, delivering the staging and production at the press conference, and wanted to contact you. It seems pretty hard to find a contact via the EA website so I thought i'd try this way. Please could you email me at christian@events22.co.uk if you get the time. Kind regrads,

Agfan4life,

Thank you for the compliment.  I think that is time for EA Sports to do something different in the baseball series while drawing upon ideas that have worked in the past.

Am I the only one who fails to get excited about the NHL arcade game?

I can't really say that Nascar Kart sounds appealing to me either.  I don't watch Nascar in general so maybe that's part of the problem.  I get the picture of Mario Kart with Nascar images.  The Mario Kart model has already been perfected and I would choose it over Nascar Kart any day of the week.

WOW - These are the new EA Sports projects.  Cleary EA Sports is going really fast in the wrong direction.  Great to try something different.  Nascar Kart has a chance to sell since Nascar is a big sport.

I agree with Agfan4life who asked about Tiger Woods.  The series launch is a long way off but some information would be nice.  Developer's blog for this game would be good.  Actually, the game will probably launch shortly after Madden so it is not that far off.  This is another series that launches at the wrong time.  Golf is just kicking off its season but the EA Sports product launches just before the end of the season.

I have said it before and I will repeat it once again.  Head Coach needs to launch in the spring and Tiger Woods should launch in the spring when its season starts.  Both of these titles are currently launching against competition from Madden and NCAA which are two of the biggest launches for EA Sports every year.

Mr Moore

I'm throwing my support for NFL Head Coach09. Asking for the continuation of this game.

This game had it all and is on the cusp of greatness. With some more work and tightening. This is THE Football game I have been waiting for.

I am still playing this game in January. Madden has been on the shelf since August.

I want "REAL" football when it comes to video games. NFL Head Coach brings it everytime I fire up the PS3!

Thanks!

Attention Ian,

Here are some pictures of the two handed technique both wide receivers and d-backs use when the first catch the football or intercept a pass.  The two handed ball carry is a precursor to the conventional tuck or the more flashy ball palm.  The two handed ball carry along with towels, unbuckled chin straps, high/low socks and Nike cleats should all be added to madden 2010 roster.

Feedback.  Let's just say that you will ask more questions than will ever be answered by Mr. Moore or anyone associated with EA Sports.  Your questions will outnumber the answers given by EA Sports.  They aren't smart enough to supply a "I don't know" or "We will look into that"

We are still awaiting word on Head Coach, baseball game plans, and the future plans of Madden/Tiger Woods for the PC platform.  The developers blogs are nice but eventually Tiger Woods needs to come aboard with a developers blog of their own.

It is nice to see that Peter Moore has started playing with World of Goo and I hope that relates into some innovative games for EA Sports.

Moore - You mentioned who predicted that the Arizona Cardinals would make it to the Super Bowl.  EF slowly stands up from his computer and takes a bow with his right hand raised.  I live in Texas but the story behind the Cardinal's team has intrigued me.  You have Eddgerin James who was supposedly a washed-up running back whose perfomance was expected to decline rapidly just because he hit 30-year old mark.  You have Matt Leinhart who was the can't miss prospect from greatest dynasty in the world (USC) but yet you have Kurt Warner starting this year.  Kurt Warner came from the college powerhouse of Northern Iowa and now name a team that wouldn't want to sign him.  How many people said that Kurt Warner was washed up before coming to Arizona?  A better question would be How many people weren't saying that he was washed up.

The talking heads were too busy puckering up to the Mannings and the Patriots prior to the season.  News flash - the Mannings and the Patriots missed the Super Bowl.

This is the type of details that video games don't give you.  It is too robotic.  The story is what is intriguing me about the Cardinals.  They are the underdogs and I root for the underdogs. Its more fun that way.  Maybe this is why I like to play role-playing games.  There is a story out there.  I am not sure if a sports game is capable of those types of details.

Jack,

Do you enjoy playing the game as is?

Are socks, cleat brands, chin straps, and little stupid details that important??

If they fix all of those things, even though the cleat brands might have copyright issues or be expensive to attain the rights to, will you start complaining about the height of the grass on the playing field?

Maybe you'll complain the the New York Jets have a blond, 26 year old woman as a season ticket holder in the same seat every game and EA didn't put her into Madden 2011?

Or maybe you will complain that the hot dog vendors aren't walking through the stands like they are supposed to be.

Maybe the new complaint will be that the coaches always get lemon-lime gatorade poured on them, and in the game it looks like they use orange.

I think EA should rot for not paying attention to the players socks, and putting all their focus into gameplay, graphics, and sound! (sarcasm)

I guess what I'm saying is socks are not that big a deal.  If that is all that is stopping you from enjoying your game, then I guess you are the type of person that will never be pleased with what they are given.

Hey Landokiwi5, the only funny bone in your body resides in your undergarments, so please stick to playing video games rather then trying to compose sarcastic blogs.  Anyway, I don't feel like going back and forth with you..You post your opinions and I'll post mine.  I could care less about gameplay, graphics, and sound..To me, these are the meaningless elements of Madden (sarcasm)!!  I just feel if Ea uses the slogan "It's In the game" then they should put these elements in their game.  Ea posted a 30 second spot on it's website last year prior to the super bowl that showed members of the New York Giants (Strahan & Osi) wearing Nike cleats in a Madden simulation.  This advertisement gave me hope that Peter and company would actually be paying the price in Madden 09 to get copyright agreements with companies like Nike, Under Armour, and Wilson to put these products "In The Game".  If little details like shoe brands and sock style are an essential part of NBA LIVE how come similar attention is not paid to the Madden models?  Madden has circumvented copyright agreements before, especially when it comes to putting the likenesses of former NFL greats illeagally in their Madden game so why can't Soft Pete and company find the means to do the the same with Nike products ect...

You know Jack, I think you're right.

In fact I think I'm going to join your crusade.

To the producers, I will work on getting all the players but I have two for now.

It's apparent if you watch the games that Ben Rothlisberger,  Drew Brees, Ray Lewis, and Payton Manning prefers "Fruit of the Loom" socks, while Champ Bailey, Tom Brady, Terrell Owens, and Donovan McNabb are clearly "Hanes" men.

In Madden 09 you can't even tell what kind of socks they wear.  This is an issue that needs to be fixed immediately.

Jack said:

January 25, 2009 12:56 AM

Jack's right, nice post I just wonder how a person of your stature would know that Mcnabb and Owens are hanes men.  It seems as though someone has been caught with their limp wrist in the underware drawer.  Anyway, If Mcnabb and others do wear Hanes like you say it is apprent then that you must wear victoria secret...

Take a shower, lose some weight, and move out of your Mom's basement junior.

Get a girlfriend.  I think that will make you forget about your petty grievances with a video game.

Jack,

The users on this blog have tried to gently tell to take your suggestions to the developer's blog.

Please do it ASAP.  The majority of the users here do not care about the same issues that you do.  Suggestions on this blog are for games that don't currently have development blogs.  You have mentioned Madden and NCAA which both have active development boards.  We made the development blogs so that you the user would have a place to take your ideas.  We want this to be a destination where you can talk directly with the makers of the game.  My blog is not that place.

The Madden developers blog is full of people who are waiting to talk you about your ideas.  You have the ability to post blogs and post as many pictures as you desire.  Others have the ability to comment on your ideas.

I do not program the games.

I have tried to communicate this to you on regular updates of my blog but you apparently are not reading these vital updates.  The developers are aware of all your suggestions and I have told them about your ideas 100 times which is the same number of times that you have felt the need to share these same ideas.  It were a hundred different ideas then it might be acceptable.

If there is an issue with the developer blogs then please let me know.  EA Sports is here to help you.

Sincerly,

Peter Moore
