Welcome to Peter Moore's Official Blog

In this blog you'll see what Peter thinks about sports, sports video games, and the industry in general. We hope this gives you an inside look at EA SPORTS, so please enjoy!

Peter Moore About Peter EA Support

WTF? (Where The hell is FIFA 09?)

Firstly, happy holidays to everyone in EA SPORTS Nation. I hope you all have had a restful few days and have been able to get your sports fix in front of the TV without your wife/girlfriend/mom/mum giving you a bad time...

I'm sure like many of you, I spent some time following the year end "best of" lists for video games. It seems like every web site and magazine publishes such a list, and as always, they create some frenzied forum threads as gamers agree, and more likely disagree, with the inclusion of many of the games.

One that I always make a point of following is the Eurogamer Top 50. They unveil the list over 5 days, 10 games at a time. This provides a certain sense of drama and anticipation, as the non-mention of your favorite game makes you believe it is destined for one of the top spots in the list.

The drama began on Boxing Day (ask a British friend...) with the unveiling of games 41-50. Hmmm...Mass Effect at 49? Thought it deserved more, maybe even a top 10 spot, but hey, it's an RPG, and I know how polarizing that genre can be with reviewers. Mario Kart in this bracket too? Is this a forbearer of Wii dissing to come? December 27th saw the next bracket, and I was proud to see Lost Odyssey making the list. Sakaguchi-san was a great partner and friend while I was at Microsoft, and I think the progress the Xbox 360 is enjoying in Japan right now can be traced both to this game and Blue Dragon from his Mistwalker Studios. No EA SPORTS games as of yet. I have high hopes for both Tiger and FIFA getting high marks this year...

Sunday brought the 21-30 slot, and I was surprised to see Wii Fit included, which I thought would make the top 10 given its creation of a brand new consumer base for our industry. I guess it is difficult to characterize as a "game" per se, I rationalized with myself, and that's why it didn't make the top bracket. Really excited now for FIFA 09, as it has now at least a top 20 game. Worried about Tiger though, but fingers crossed...

Monday, and it's 11-20. Tomb Raider? OK, that's interesting. Proud to see Boom Blox, Spore, Burnout and Mirror's Edge, getting some deserved love. No FIFA, so Top 10 here we come baby!

Tuesday morning, coffee in hand and clad in my Liverpool FC officially licensed pajamas (you think I'm kidding, don't you), I log in and scroll down the list from 10 to 1, getting more excited as I get closer to the top spot. World of Goo? I'm sure it's fun, and the reviewers certainly loved it, but surprised to see up so high. Gears 2 - great job Epic. Left 4 Dead - delighted that we at EA were involved in getting this great title to market. Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 - Scousers Rule! Fable 2 - Lionhead delivers. This is where I got a queasy feeling in my stomach. I know GTA IV was yet to come, as was Little Big Planet. And I hadn't seen FallOut 3 yet. I scrolled quickly all the way to the number one spot...Huh? WTF?? As in WHERE THE HELL IS FIFA 09???

Now I get that the sports genre is the Rodney Dangerfield of games when the awards are handed out. But c'mon, one of the best sports games of recent times not even in the Top 50? This title will sell in excess of 10 million units when all is done and dusted, but doesn't even rank a mention?

Really? Seriously? Is it not cool to include a so-called mass market game? Bangai-O Spirits (no disrespect Treasure) makes it and FIFA 09 doesn't?

Eurogamer - you are and always will be one of my favorite gaming web-sites, but you were waaaay offside on this one.

Rant over - Happy New Year to all.

Mr. Moore,

I understand your nationlistic attitude towards a UK title and loving soccer, and also the anticipation to see your current company's title in the Eurogamer top 50 list. But just so you understand, sports games gather non-gamers to play sports titles for a short period of time, and some people might even smoke pot and laugh stupidly and play Fifa or Winning Eleven series for a long time, but it doesn't mean they respect gaming as an art form. I believe, that sports games can be art, for example, just as much as any good movie about sports. It just doesn't mean, that if a game sells well, and is critically acclaimed (which Fifa 09 was, according to the metacritic scores), that the game deserves it's spot in the best 50 games of 2008 list.

Fifa 09 is an ok game. It has grown slowly, after years and years trying to do the same thing better and better. It doesn't suprise anyone, it doesn't get too much attention, and it certainly doesn't belong to the top 50 of any list. It is a game, that has been built on a formula, like a hollywood movie sequel: make it more detailed, have a couple of new twists and it will sell. While as a game, it works, but it just had too many good and bad tries behind it to make it a game that deserves something special. If FIFA 09 was created from nothingness, then it would have earnt possibly a better spot. I am thinking of Okami, World Of Goo, Little Big Planet, Patapon etc.

What I think, is that you just wanted to see a game that is made by your company, supported by your friends, and with your biased nationalistic attitude towards football, you got upset. Basically, a game that you like, that is not on the list, even though the reasons are obvious.

You can be a fundamental as much as you want, which you sound like, but I believe figure heads should carry more responsibility than "WTF?!?!??!??!" comments. Simply, because your influence is important in the gaming world. Bear the responsibility and play those games that got into top 50 list. And I know you didn't play them, because you are too busy for that. And if you did play them all, you are not doing your job well. In either case, Fifa just doesn't belong up there and you have to live with it, from now on, hopefully, with more maturity.

Don't worry Peter. Some UK sites recognised FIFA 09 as quality this year.

Mr.  Moore,

I'm surprised.  I didn't realize you had it in you.  I have heard worse language before and have probably used worse on this site talking about gaming.

I won't comment on FIFA although I will say that this was in a European poll.  Omiting FIFA is the equivalent of omitting Madden from an American poll.

Glad to see you showing passion about the game.  We are all passionate about games and that is why we post here.

Happy New Year.

I think it is stupid that you think that fifa09 deserved a high rank, it has nothing new to it, there in no innovation it is the same game year in year out. If you want some advice, sack everyone in the production of that game and start over and you might actually have a good game on your hands. To be honest a rework of tetris deserved to be in at #50 more than fifa did.

And yes I am english

I know I think it deserved to be in the Top 20 atleast, if not Top 10 in my opinion. But then again Peter, as long as the money keeps rolling in piles as we Brits keep buying the game (it was #1 in Christmas I believe in the UK) then who cares what those egotistical Eurogamer lot think.

FIFA 09 is by far one of the most addictive games and the best thing of all, it has converted so many PES fans its untrue. Good riddance too because PES 09 was trash.

Perhaps as its a given as there's only 2 footie games ,that people didnt need reminding of the fact  fiifa is king this year opps last year ? see if it was a crowded market of  football games then perhaps there be more of a understanding of the huge strides taken by the fifa barnd over the last 2 years ? .

Strange one really as i was at there expo and there was more tv's runing fifa 09 than any other game so they had some love for it  atleast .

And whos this gerrard guy ?????  COYB

Ps get rid of the moral in fifa 09 its killing the game online .

Greetings Mr. Moore

First of all things, i want to express my admiration for you. I follow ur work since the dreamcast and i´m convinced that you are on the of the most competent guys in this induustry. Seriously, your work is amazing!

Second, i fully agree with your rant. I was aways a Winning Eleven/PES player and i was blow away by this new FIFA!

FIFA 09 is a great achievement! Is a great sports sim and finally kicked the PES a*ss.

Sorry about my english, i´m brazilian (so, we understand football!).

Oh, btw, im editor of a brazilian blog called HARDCOREGAMING, one of the most popular gaming blog´s of Brasil, and we choose FIFA 09 as THE BEST SPORT GAME OF 2009.

i know we are not as famous as Eurogamer, but have in mind that many of we, players, are really happy with EA SPORTS work in this new installment in the series!

FIFA 09 is a sure goal!

It was however, along with FIFA 09, included in the "Readers Top 50" (10th and 11th respectively) and what the readers think is more important than Eurogamers in my opinion.

Dear Mr. Moore,

I must agree on your blog. Fifa 09 is a game which should certainly be mentoined in a top 50 game of the year list. But, to put things in perspective, Fifa comes to the market every year. Still if you made a Fifa which was the BEST game in its franchise EVER... still it would not be top ten material I guess. Critics always tend to praise new initiatives. My top ten also mentioned GTA IV, Fable 2, Fallout 3, but Professor Layton, and Burnout Paradise as well. Fifa 09 would defininately be in my top 20 (likely in the 20 - 15 range) and its one of the games I play whole the year... untill the newer version comes out. :-)

To make long things short - Yes, Eurogamer should've mentioned Fifa somewhere, but No... it can hardly deserve and place in the top 10 eventough it's a great game with some awesome new features.

Kudos!!!! Best football sim ever...really!

Don't be discouraged by not receiving any honors...the real honors are the ones that spread through word of mouth....and these are pretty positive, I assure you.

Looking forward to FIFA 10!

Just to add to my comment:

Nowadays gaming business is a hit or miss business just like hollywood blockbuster movies. As a contrast is actually quite a phenomenon to see bad, but successful movies in the oscars (which I do not respect) or golden globe ceremonies. Gaming sites do not want to support those blockbuster "make it bigger, more detailed and give them more of the same, the audience will love it. This time, do it with a twist! That is the selling point!" -kind of titles. Now, while I do admit that Fifa 09 is a good title gameplay wise, better than Winning Eleven 2009 surprisingly, it just doesn't belong up there. It's something that the marketing machines make work, how the secret deals in the pubs and bars work after the release parties with the reviewers (yes I've been in the business for a long time...) make it big. That's all. It's a 8/10 game, with nothing exceptional in it. All the points above it were bought or given by biased people. I like how the RPG reviewers are critical and cynical towards new RPG IPs, that is the way it should be. Oh the good old days, none of this marketing machine stuff happened then...

Well, maybe Mr. Moore just made couple of more people buy the game!

Hi Pete

Just a quick note about Mass Effect -  I think this was in the Eurogamer Top 10 last year with its release on the 360.

Also, it wasn't only FIFA that wasn't included from the world of Sports gaming.  No mention either of Pro Evo 2009 (sorry!) or arguably the best sports title in years, NHL 09.  As a Brit myself I was astonished to find how much fun NHL was, that game deserved to do better over here, though I guess it is no surprise it has been largely ignored.

It is not new for Sports game to be given short shrift on gaming websites, and I'm not sure what you can do to change this, or if it even needs changing.  As you've said, FIFA will sell over 10 million copies anyway, surely it is better for game like World of Goo to get the press you guys don't seem to need, or at least can afford to produce for yourselves.  I only know of World of Goo through the enthusiast press, where as I remember a three or four minute advert on Sky Sports during half time of a major 'soccer' (eurgh) match that must have cost you guys a fortune!  I'm not saying you shouldn't advertise,  I just don't understand why you'd need a 'Game of the Year' nomination to help; surely the 10 million sales are all the reward you need?

P.S.  If Liverpool win the League I will look at a hat and consider eating it, though will ultimately reject the idea as ludicrous.

Revvin said:

I think a football game should have made it. Both PES and FIFA duke it out year on year and push each other to improve and I really think the FIFA brand has won that battle over the last two years. I've played the FIFA franchise since the first top down view version and later went on to buy the PES games but the 08 and 09 versions of FIFA stood head and shoulders above its rival.

As football has such a huge following in Europe I thought Eurogamer would have recognised this on going battle and as a nod to the sports genre included one of these titles in its list. To leave it out is very odd, very odd indeed.

P.S good to hear you are a Liverpool fan Peter, perhaps you can work on the stats for next year in the game and show our European pedigree a little more :)

Ice642 said:

For a european website not to recognise the achievements of FIFA 09 this year is a disgrace, they should know that EA has put the effort in to decide the winner of the next-gen football format and that because they claim to be a european website, they should cater to their market. FIFA 09 this year has undoubtably been the best game of FIFA in years and has reached a mass market audience, including the majority on my friends list. Congratulations EA on making a superb game.

FIFA is severely inferior to PES, but both are not trying anything new and big since the change from 2D to 3D, and that's not just for soccer games, so there is no reason at all to sports games make a top 50 list from any website

first, learn not to milk the whole thing, until then, get over it.

Your comments are baseless and infer you like drinking pints feigning over soccer when you should be concerned with pooling billions together to buy Rockstar so you can pimp out good developers at 2k and get something other than the same lazy, incremental slop your sports division does. Maybe monopolies work for the Borg, as your companies scary assimilation of the videogame market has done nothing for real gamers (own all 3 systems, tried EA's demos, and hate them all). LAZY! Seems Microsoft is doing well without ya, but hey, how is that street date lie of a GTA IV tattoo treating ya? Just wondering.... Anyway, maybe EA can buy the gaming sites too so that you get the ratings/top 50 polls in your favor. You greedy bastards definitely have the money after assimilating some of the top gaming companies in the past 5 years. Look into that.

I think Michael is the first person to call out the fact that we have niche videogame fans running all the videogame media sites. If you haven't noticed, almost every videogame media person is a male 23-30 who loves LittleBigPlanet and hates the Wii. The fact that society is the complete opposite should be a sign to the videogame media that they need to start serving their customers instead of insulting them.

These same people will talk about The Dark Knight until the cows come home, but will ignore critically acclaimed little movies like The Wrestler. I hate the hippocracy.

Long live FIFA, the Wii and every other video game that the "stupid" customer is buying. If its being bought, there is something obviously wrong with it.

In response, Retrobloke - FIFA 09 boasted a massive number of improvements this year. So many, in fact, that it defeated Pro Evolution Soccer in terms of the quality stakes for the first year in recent memory. I used to hate FIFA titles. Every year, the same old feeling of "this could be really and truly awesome" came about, and every year the game let me down. This year, it didn't. I'm playing through the Be A Pro mode for the fifth time, right now, and even though it really should have provided a 20 year-career instead of a paltry 4-year one, I'll play it again.

Folks bash FIFA for being FIFA, and that's a fact. It's not "cool" to like FIFA if you're in the industry. You're viewed as someone who knows nothing, if you do. Eurogamer's forum users would probably set light to the Eurogamer offices if they put FIFA in the top 50 games of the year and missed out the homebrew release of Pretentious Japanese Shooter De Go Super X Times 45 That Nobody Understands But Will Import Anyway To Look Good on the Wonderswan.

The fact that Tomb Raider - which was a step forward for the series, but still nowhere near as good in terms of quality as such an allegedly rich franchise should be - made the chart and FIFA didn't is an absolute shocker. There again, Eurogamer didn't half have a lot of ads for Tomb Raider when it came out. I wonder if there's a correlation? Probably not.

I agree with Peter about the FIFA issue, but maybe not so about Tiger Woods PGA Tour missing out. It is a very, very good game, but it isn't anything like one of the most innovative or best games of the year. I enjoy a round every now and again, but even as a hardcore fan of the series, I wasn't overly impressed - especially with the price tag being £10 more than any other EA title this Christmas.

Adam said:

Hi Peter,

The EuroGamer Top 50 does raise some eyebrows. For every title you would expect to see there, there were also ones that perhaps should not. Mercernaries 2 and FarCry 2 as good as they are probably don't cut the top 50 Mustard and then there is WiiWare stuff too.

I don't know where FIFA09 should go in that list but I can say that it is the best installment to date and for the first time ever has had me starting at PES wondering what went wrong.

Sorry Dude, FIFA doesn't deserve to be the on the top 50 games of 2008. Where is the originality?

It's a football game, the same one EA churns out every year. Sure there are a few innovations and the gameplay is a little better, but it is the SAME game you released last year tweaked and the same game you will release in Oct 2009 with a few more tweaks.

There is nothing in FIFA 09 that warrants a top 50 place at all, please don't mention the poor Addidas Live Season as an innovation, as that is something you are trying to sqeeze out of the punter for more $$$$. The only thing that warrants a mention is 10 vs. 10 and I'm sure you'll find a way of getting us to pay for that as well.

Give the consumer some kind of revolution, not evolution of the title then you'll see the Top 50 lits with FIFA's name in it.

Mr.  Moore,

Let me give you my opinion of what happened.  Everybody knows what they are getting when a new sports title comes out.  Very little of the original formula changes.

As you know, my game of choice is NCAA 09 and soon to be NCAA 2010.  I am not expecting a completely new game.  I know pretty much how the game will play and I am holding out hope that new upgrades will be included.

The RPG formula has changed a lot over the years.  They used to be turn-based and now a new genre has emerged.  An example of the old style would be the first US Dragon Warrior which was released on the NES.  You select action, computer selects action.  You get the idea.  The action-roleplaying game.  Think of Diablo and Dungeon Siege when you think of this genre.  It has been rumored that the new Final Fantasy game will go away from battles when traveling from city to city.

My whole point is that the majority of your sports games haven't had radically different ways of playing.  The best example that I can think of is the Superstar Mode/Campus Legend modes in the football games and I heard lots of criticism directed towards these modes.

I haven't played FIFA since it was on the original Playstation 1.

I think that sports games get overlooked for the reasons that I have outlined above.  Most people view sports title launches as FIFA 1 or FIFA 2.   It is likely that a gamer will not purchase the sports game if he/she opted not to the buy previous edition.

Just my opinion.  That is all.

All you guys talk ab out FIFA not being included becasue it is not "original".  I see.  What EXACTLY is "original" about Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, Gears of War 2, etc.  They are all sequals!  No groundbreaking stuff in any of those games.  The fact is a good game is a good game.  Period. ...  it should not be left off the list simply because it appears every year.  The best selling game for the biggest sport in the world DESERVES to be on that list...especially when it may top 10M copies.

Yeah, this year fifa on PC was a little bit better etc., but it still sucks, you only took the old game and gave it a new graphic look and that's all..yes maybe on console you develop first class sports game (lol, hard to believe) but for your attitude to PC gamers and this "whinning list" i'm glad that Eurogamer did what did and made you react... sorry for my english

Hey Peter, sorry to hear that FIFA 09 failed to make the Eurogamer list, but to be honest these lists are usually way off base anyway.  Let's face it, Madden took home top game honors for a number of years and did not deserve any accolades in my opinion.  Over the last several years Madden was just a shell of the previous years version with a few minor adjustments here and there.  I just hope that the snub of FIFA 09 makes you get back to drawing board and produce 2010 games that make the lists you want and are trully worthy to be there.

If Peter Moore as credit in the industrie it is preciesly because he does not sugar caught his speech when he is crossed or pissed, as here.

I am no football fan, but the fact that Fif as not only cought up with but surpassed PES this year again is a feat that should have been underlined, and the quality of the game is just absolutely obvious, even for people who don't play Foot Sims.

The comment was justified, and as involved as he is, I understand Peter Moore voicing his opinion frankly.

So to end on the right: WTH Guys, on a top 10 or 20 I would have understood, but on a top 50?? there was enough space for Fifa to appear this year.

Please read the first paragraph of the Eurogamer Lists:

"Here we are then, the final instalment in our Top 50 Games of 2008. It's worth reiterating once again that the list is not intended as a definitive rundown of the 50 best games of the year, but instead reflects votes cast by our staff and contributors based on the games they have played and enjoyed."

Fifa 09 is not in the lists, because none of the editors or contributors marked it as one of their 10 favorite games this year - that is why. Perhaps they don't like sport games, perhaps there were simply dozen more games that catered more to their tastes ... in any case, this was not a GOTY list - it was a "our favorite games of 2008" list.

John said:

Just because a game sells well does NOT automatically equate with quality.  Sorry, but that's just the facts.  A huge number could have been bought out of hype; a huge number could have been bought as gifts to others.

Regardless, it's just a game.  Chill out.  All that EA should care about is making good games that sell well and that their *customers* enjoy.  If the game doesn't end up on a "Top 50" list but still ends up making a profit, then stop acting like a girl who didn't get a date for the school dance.  That list isn't what matters.

I hope you show as much despair for games that are critically acclaimed but generate very few sales!

EF said:

Mr. Moore,

The volume of comments being left on this blog should tell you just how beloved FIFA is.

I have the heard the concept of hype being tossed around.  Consider this.

How many people are looking forward to Diablo 3?  Why?  The reason is because it hasn't been produced every year.  It is a proven franchise and gamers know the general premise of what they are going to get in terms of gameplay.  I am not telling you to stop producing sports games every year but an annual sports game needs top-notch features and gameplay to stand out.  Most of the editiors have seen the concept of a football game before.

Will Diablo 3 live up to the hype?  I am looking forward to the game but ultimately I will probably read reviews and previews to make my decision.  Spore was hyped and the final product disappointed me.  It wasn't a bad game but it didn't live up to its hype.

The best thing about EA Sports games is that I pretty much know what I am going to get.  The formula is a proven one and the new editions very rarely stray too far from that sucessful formula.

The gamers are speaking out on this blog and they are telling you how much they love FIFA.  This should be worth more than any news story.

Now get back to work and make some great football games so we can heap some praise on your teams this summer.  That is all.

but just to give it the old college try i will again post my ideas even thought i feel like no one is listening i and you should challenge Peter Moore the

President of EA SPORTS to take 1% of his time to check out all of these great ideas we have come up with over the years i bet if he did that and incorporated these ideas, NCAA Football would be not be just great but rock solid who would know best but we the consumers who work hard for our money and who chose to buy and support EA but where is our support where is our listening ear i feel there is none here but have faith some one once told me we shall see

Mr. Moore, I'll tell you that I love FIFA 09.  I've played PC games for decades and sport games have never been that enjoyable on the computer.  I bought FIFA 08 for the Wii earlier this year, played a few times, and didn't bother picking it up again.  After reading a review of FIFA 09 Wii, I bought that game and was really hooked with the target gameplay and it was a lot of fun!  I started to play some of the Manager Mode and really became addicted.  After checking more online feedback, I bought FIFA 09 for the PC.  The PC version had more depth than the Wii version, but the game play on the pitch wasn't that enjoyable.

So at age 44 I went and bought a real gaming console (PS3) just to play FIFA 09.  I've been playing it every day for more than a month and my wife grows very weary.

I've now bought 3 versions of the game (you're welcome).  It is great fun and I'll likely buy FIFA 2010 as soon as it comes out.  But, like all annual sports titles it will suffer when compared to fresh and new games.  Sports games will have a limited appeal beyond the core/repeat buyers.

With that said, I hope you invest in the Manager's Mode for those folks that don't live to play online.  Great job on this title and keep up the good work!

Its quite sickening to see so many people complaing that FIFA is nothing different than in the past when looking at it it made me raise the question well what is? Looking back over the years FIFA espically in the early 00's when you baught the new game all you where really getting was a team update and some better graphics, however FIFA 08 introduced some very exciteing aspects of the game that where still quite iffy but could be ironed out. FIFA 09 on the other hand molded them all into one great game.

You have to remember espically with sports games it is a lot harder to make the game different you buy it to do one thing ad thats play the sport it what you expect it what you get. This then lead me on to the line of FPS... no different, simlar plot run round shoot every time like a sports game run round score so not that different. Call of duty is a good example same game set in a different year different weapons thats about it.

With a lot of games i find one you have completed it it just sits on the shelf. For it to bring me back an keep me playing after the initial game it has to have a great multiplyer online game or split screen i might pick it up again when my mate are round but thats about it. With FIFA EA have done really well in is the online gaming okay you end up playing a game of footy id hope so thats why i baught it! but the options it gives you provides a wide varity of online gaming FIWC set up your own leage play your mates, strangers what ever eith way it boils down to a competative bit of fun.

I dont buy FIFA every year dontthink itas worth it but 09 got me hooked i can put it down for months while playing somthing else usually a FPS and as soon as im board of that ill just pick it up again and always will it my come back to game and always will be. I hated EA for FIFA 08 and there will always be parts of FIFA09 i dislike and fustrait me liek said above no they dont pay attencion to the threads to see what where sayingbut it still brings a sence of great play without being to ralistic to thhe point where i might aswell just watch a game of football and although it shouldnt eank no1 in my opinion not even top 50 is somthing of a joke.

FIFA has stood the test of time so far and i think will continue to do so.

I think little planet is a complete joke its like, and....?

and for Mr Moore i wouldnt wory too much about eurogamer for a start it has the word "euro" init which is never a good sign and im sure FIFA did more than line you pockets over christmas alone!

Hey Peter,

What about worrying a little bit for another EA sport title which has been missing for a while: EA RUGBY!!!! Rugby 08 was the quintessence of the old EA philosophy, an update with nothing in it. Give us a proper game for a proper sport!!!!

But yes i do agree FIFA and NHL deserved to be in the list, but Eurogamer's so called journalists are (in)famous for being blind and arrogant when it comes to being fair with reviewing games. They want to be "different" at any cost just for the sake of it.

World of Goo > King's Bounty > FIFA '09

All of you who think I'm wrong (since World of Goo is 2D, heaven forbid), go here: worldofgoo.com/dl2.php and download the World of Goo demo. 30MB, shouldn't take long.

Can't be bothered to try it? Then read about it here: www.rockpapershotgun.com/.../world-exclusive-world-of-goo-review but you're the one missing out.

Peter said above "World of Goo? I'm sure it's fun, and the reviewers certainly loved it, but surprised to see up so high". Go on, try the game. Then you'll know whether its fun or not. The reviewers loved it because it was brilliant. They review all the games that come out, so they must know something, otherwise they wouldn't have jobs. Futhermore, it must've been that high for a reason. Find out that reason.

The issue with FIFA games is that they're just constant sequels. And sequels tend to get dull and repetitive after the third (see movie franchises). FIFA is now in its 16th iteration. Football can't get more inventive than what it already is. Most FIFA '09 players would probably get the same enjoyment from FIFA 2004, but will probably disagree due to "graphical enhancements".

Another thing you have to consider is just how many games are released every year. By my count almost 300 were released in 2008. Only 50 can be chosen. They could include the iterative titles and remove those more unique, or they could list things that genuinely did something enjoyable that wasn't the same as last years version.

So go on, take on my World of Goo challenge. You can't tell me that FIFA is better than the competition without trying out the competition.

Tayron said:

Are you stupid? If it's fun and the reviewers like it then why shouldn't be high up? d'oooh'!! haven't you EA guys ever thought that fifa is becoming kinda lame? I mean it the same thing over and over again....with both better and crappier graphics. Ever thought that the gamers might be...dunno...sick and tired of all this ***? How can you say a game isn't worth it if you never played? Or what? Are Kyle and Ron persona non grata cause they made a game better than EA ever made since the beginning? Ever thought of listening to what the GAMERS want? Noooo....of course not....you just do crappy sequels to otherwise good games....WTF is with NFS Undercover, btw? It's the crappiest NFS ever!!! Along with Pro-Street. FIFA isn't in the list cause it's LAME!  World of Goo could easily be the "Best Game of The Year" for graphics, puzzle, game-play, originality, music and the new section, "no bugs", to name but a few.

In conclusion, all I can do is to give you a hint, since you are all-mighty and all-powerful:

PLAY games BEFORE commenting them, ok?

FIFA 09 isn't the usual sport update, it is a great polished game full of depth with pretty much every game mode you can possibly think of. So it surely deserves to be considered  among the best 50 games of the year for its production value.

Yes it is not original nor it will ever be, but i am not sure that there are so many games  out there that can give you the same amount of fun for an entire year.

So it makes no sense to come here and *** around because it is a very valuable piece of software and a true next gen franchise.

That's perfectly reasonable to say even though I haven't played the new TR yet.)

Peter also didn't even come out and say that FIFA was better than Goo, just that he expected FIFA to have made the top 50.

By only adding and reworking minor features of previous features of previous fifas which already consisted of modifications of previous modifications on previous fifas, sure you will get a top 50 game!

Some players like it new, like it interesting and above all like it with a bit less arrogance.

Do your job well and eventually it will pay off, not only on selling numbers but also in the form of appreciation of (all) gamers for your efforts in creating a good game.

Good luck in 2009, all the best.

@CharlieVolano :

What the hell is a "true next gen franchise"? Sounds like marketing bullshit to me. Do you work at EA, too?

FIfa 09 is a brilliant game, a few glitches and bugs with keepers and offside's, but hey-ho, all games have 'niggles'. Fifa shold have been top ten, even top 5. I and the Millions of online players can't be wrong.

You're pretty quick to condemn World of Goo without having played it. Now, to be fear, I haven't played Fifa since I couldn't possibly care less about soccer, so I'm as guilty as you are in writing this. I did however play WoG and I was thrilled by it. The quality of the gameplay, story, graphics, humor and controls is simply astounding. In my mind WoG represents everything that is good about games. For the first time in my adult life a computer game managed to totally captivate me.

As far as I'm concerned WoG deserves to be in any games top-10 list whereas Fifa is just another waste of time and money that I'm happy to steer clear off.

I have played an earlier variant of FIFA but not 09, and am not a football fan but the still it iwas enjoyable to play. But as others here have pointed out the title is just a sequel.

World of Goo on the other hand is ground breaking. Not only is the game completely original it is addictive with very clever and tactile goo puzzles. This will sound a bit lame but this game actually moved me in places mainly due I think to the blend of original music and beautiful design. I have now completed it but keep coming back to do the OCDs. The crazy thing about Wog is that it was made by 2 people, simply unbelievable.

Not since Doom have I been truely in awe of a game but I was with World of Goo. Play it and decide.

Btw I am not affiliated with the makers of either game.

Youre just bitchy because you didn't get enough money yet, and if your game has a higher score, more people will be tempted to buy. Sports should not be made into games. Go outside and play them if you want to play sports. Video Games should remain what they started as. Creating the ability for normal people to immerse themselves into the persona of another person and do the impossible. So everyones not an all-star at sports. big whoop. Playing a sports game won't make you one either. Also, sports-gamers and real gamers are different. Real gamers look for (what many have said before) originality and fun in a game. Not just better graphics. Heck, I still play DOOM from time to time because it's one of the goodies and oldies. On my final point, I keep reading and seeing people posting "FIFA09 is a well polished game" Yes. It is. Well polished. It has been worked on for years. It was not started from scratch, therefor you should only look at what has been IMPROVED from the previous version, and not the entire game as a whole.

Good day to you sir.

The fact of the matter is, each year the Fifa series only ever add minor upgrades each time. There's never anything new and exciting, so I'm glade its not there. Theres plenty more worthy games to be played. However, I really think you should give World a Goo a go, it's by 2 Ex-EA Employees anyway, and is a ton of fun!

Heh... I'd ask WTF fifa 00 - 08 . Isn't 09 the first good fifa game since fifa 99 ? 10 FKN years it took... and you still grumble. Make fifa 2kX even better and you're guaranteed a place in top 10... not that it matters anyway since it's market giving prizes to themselves.

Just because you have millions of dollars to throw at a game doesn't mean it is great.  Truth be told, I don't think EA has put out a game worth recognition since SSX Tricky or NBA Street.

Unfortunately, EA has been on Autopilot for the last half a decade and continues to put out games (Sports or otherwise) that are overwhelmingly "meh".  Sure, you can sell 10 million copies of Madden and NCAA 20XX to the same people that bought your previous game, and sure, that business model has yet to fail, but seriously consider what you are offering.  A re-skinned copy of the previous years games with a few new features that usually mean little to nothing for 60 dollars.  If you seriously expect something like that to win an award, you need a serious reality check.  Just because it sells doesn't mean it's great.  You don't need to look much further than the countless shovelware titles of the Wii to see that, or if you prefer, the numerous re-hashed titles on the Xbox360 (Halo 2 for example...).  I'd poke fun at the PS3's less then spectacular lineup as well but that's just too easy.

Point is, you made FIFA 09 something along the lines of decent.  It's still not innovative and it's still doesn't bring anything to the table that the hardcore audience is going to drool over.  I give you credit in that I believe that your team seriously refined it, but that doesn't score a lot of points as the baseline formula isn't that outstanding.

Hey I'm a loyal EA fifa player for years now- but i'm upset aobu tthe fact that Peter Moore is more upset aobut the fatc that his game did not get a mention in a list of games- read the comments Moore. for one minimal inovation from year to year- more of the same- but more importantly HOW DO YOU EXPECT FIFA 09 TO BE RATE DONE OF THE BEST GAME SOF THE YEAR WHEN IT HAS A A GLITCH THAT BASICALLY PREVENTS  PLAYERS FROM COMPLETING THEIR CAREER MODES- this just happened to me recently, and come to find out that this has happened to many players- when it happened to me- I actually thought it was my disc, so I went out and bought a brand new copy of FIFA 09, poppe dit in my xbox and same glitch, carrer mode freezes while simulatiing other results- form reading other blogs- the bug seemes to appear when playing with a English team in career mode- NOW HOW TE HELL DOES THAT HAPPEN??? A GLITCH IN CAREER MODE- WITHIN THE BIGGEST LEAGUE IN TH EWORLD JUST ABOUT- AND WHAT'S WORST IS THAT MANY PEOPEL HAVE COMPLAIEND TO EA AND STILL NO FIX FOR IT- INSTEAD THEY TRY TO SAY THAT IT'S A DISC OR CONSOLE PROBLEM- BS-

PETER!!!!! FIX YOUR GAME- OR LOOSE ME FOREVER TO WINNING ELEVEN- I PAID $60 PLUS FOR THIS GAME- I SHOULD NOT HAV ETO DEAL WITH SUCH BASIC GLITCHES- FIX IT FIX IT AND STOP IGNORING REPORTS OF THIS PROBLEM

Im an avid gamer and play every genre i happen to love fifa 09 among others. Fifa 09 is good enough to be in the list so it should be. Fifa 09 is part of a franchise which changes each year it is not the same game as fifa 08,07 etc.

Sports Games are boring and unimaginative (they have to be, when they're based so strictly on reality). So even when they're extremely well done and have a few new innovations or improvements they will never be as groundbreaking or creative as games in other genres. Thats just my objective opinion, but it's 100% true.
