Tennis Rules Again...

Not the headline I thought I would ever write, but having had the pleasure of attending Wimbledon this past weekend and watching the Williams sisters duke it out on Centre Court, and then being enthralled by the Federer/Nadal slugfest on Sunday on TV, tennis has its mojo back. Amazing that of all the female players in the world, that a pair of supremely athletic, fiercely competitive sisters prevailed once again to play each other in the final. Contrary to the whispers in the tabloids that the result would be determined over the breakfast table on Saturday morning, I can tell you that Serena was far from pleased to lose to big sis, whose wingspan and powerful serves (126 mph) proved too much for little sister.

I first met Venus and Serena when they were 15 and 13 respectively. I was heading global sports marketing at Reebok, and we were taking a risk by signing Venus, then an awkward, gangly young teen, to a multi-year endorsement contract. Wonderful to have seen how they
have matured over these years into polished athletes and independent businesswomen.

As regards the Men’s Final, if you missed it, you probably missed one of the top ten matches of all time. Finally tennis
has a rivalry again, and while we are not quite back to the glory years of Borg, McEnroe and Connors, it is great to see some parity returning to the men’s game.

But the real impetus for this post was the impact a new technology has had on the game, both in-stadium and on TV – and it clearly derives its inspiration and interface from video games. For years, the game has relied on the eyesight of line judges to determine close plays. Now, thanks to a technology called Hawk-Eye, the players are allowed to challenge the call, and almost in real-time, a 3-D simulation of the shot appears on the screen. With great drama, the ball lands in or out. Crowd loved it in-stadium, it gets rave reviews from TV viewers, and from what I understand, it has been embraced by the players as accurate and a fair and equitable way to immediately resolve line calls.

Looking forward to next week at E3.

Cheers,
Peter

Hello Peter,

I find it funny that the slogan is "it's in the game" because if you've played the 2008 version of Tiger Woods you have to ask yourself where? It's not a knock on the gameplay, it's done well, but when trying to find the proshop, you won't see it unless you scroll through a number of menus, and then it's under gameface. Just wondering if they're doing anything to clean this up this year. I would think a lot of Tiger players aren't regular gamers and would appreciate a streamlined experience. I understand that there's a lot of content but surely it could be better organized?

Will you be addressing things in your games like the drama of two sisters playing each other.

To that extent no.   But will you ever include Bowl record in the commentary ie. qb; coach record in bowls or rushin yards etc...      Make the games feel different.  I have played your college game demo.  Nice on the visuals and controls or ok for a hack like me.

What I want is to feel that Louisville and Rutgers game of two years ago. Where both teams undeafeted and it had meaning on the BCS stage.  or how about West virginia vs Pittsburgh last years season ender.  I watched and could care less but it had Bcs meaning all over it..

your bowls feel like the same game with different endzones...

different anmimations for sidelines ; gatorade baths..  more fist pumping..  unlockable animations for undefeated seasons . beating a rival in so many years......Navy just didn't shake hands after win at South bend...... They partied like a BCS win..

Commentary is a way bigger aspect than you think.  Read your post . It's not about tennis.. Its the story behind the game..  Play a season in any sport on any system and its just game after game after game.

Why can't you hire some no names for exposure give them a script and let us download different commentators for different conferences.  I would love to hear southern drawl in southern stadiums.

You have used Corso and the Qb for years and frankly they are stale.  I almost love the matter of fact..  so and so ran for so many yards you get on the Psp when you play with a div 2 school..

I would really love to hear a radio play-by play for all repays. I would watch em...  I heard bluray is huge fill it...

you want to really fix recruiting make it a game inside the game.  Only the top 5 stars show up on a master list to all..

the rest are all hidden that you actually have to send out scouts to different states to find hidden gems any school can build around.     All schools have good info inside their state with lesser getting less combine type numbers.. but you know who they are...

all based a time to recruit system. more to bigger schools of course. But what if i have a hidden five star in my state..

or put in potential like basketball.. a player that can grow  or use  team mechanic like fifa  a team with more returners has better coheison and less penaties fumnbles etc... know their audibles and such

in season recruiting should be broken into two parts... first couple weeks like four can call mom, coach. friend , teacher or team mate to find out what matters  in kids life..   then you can find out your pitch not some just meaningless guess.

If you win a big game more recruit points/time regardless of your total wins and losses. Rutgers is still recruiting off that Louisvillle win.  If you don;t know know then you dont' know college football..

I guess I should be disappointed that I probably missed the greatest Tennis match ever live. And I was actually trying to remember to watch both finals matches since they are both dream matches.

Yeah Tennis Rules!..........Can someone hand me the remote.  I still think all that stuff is fake.  Kind of like Pro Wrestling, except for the rich, or the French.

That's what EA Sports games are really missing, the drama.  I want a game where after my players retire, they write books about how other players take steroids, then I want to be able to follow the Congressional Hearings during the season.  Depending on how high a player's Awareness rating is decides how well he does when being asked difficult questions.  I would also like to see police raids on dog fighting, random drug tests (could be done in mini-game fashion where you have to keep the stream aiming in the center of the cup, the more drugs the player's done the harder his hands shake), and I want the option to videotape opponents sidelines, date cheerleaders (against the rules), and squabble over hair length.  Now that is REAL sports.  I can only hope my dreams will come to life!  PLEASE PETER, PLEASE MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!  I NEEEEEEEEED IT!!!

I am enjoying your blogs.  I have been critical of your company in regards to Madden series.  From what I have seen you may be the answer to a lot of peoples prayers.  Leadership was needed to take this series to where it needs to be and that is as the prominent game within not only EA but all sports companies.  The efforts of 06,07,08 were not stellar.  08 was just unplayable at times.  It is evident what people are wanting in the next gen series, and that is great game play, and the return of the owner/franchise mode of the 04/05 consloses.  Things like back trax are good, but the rewind and the virtual trainer are another story.  You only get mulligans in golf, the virtual trainer will be used once or twice then it will be by passed.  What will truly sell more games is buillding on the franchise mode and dare I say even the online experience.  Check out the forums and you will see what drives this game.  The new comers will come, but you have to keep building on the core,   You would get a lot of good will if you guys would just come out and say, Hey it was broke and 09 is the first step in fixing it.  If it was in 04/05 and you put it back in 9/10 that's not a new feature, it a return to what should have never changed.  We are looking for content, better game play, better animations, more control of our teams, and being able to effect change in our team as in morale and attitude.  See Head Coach.  Speaking of, Head Coach seems to be the testing ground for a new franchise mode.  We want to do all that is in Head Coach but play just like madden.  Have a base version that includes online and franchise, but if you need to put out a double disc that costs more but has all the bells and whistles that Head Coach has, then do it.  If you build it they will come.  I'd be the first in line.  Game play and content those are the challenges for 2010.

Why is there no tennis game from EA? I think it would be awesome!

Dont ever make a tennis game.

Not unless it's bundled in some other game like. . ."Beijing 2008" or something.

Ever.

Full stop.

(Actually, make a flash based casual tennis game for PC/ internet/ XBoxLive/ PSN, and then walk away)

Peter,

I just read the article on the main page entitled "EA SPORTS DELIVERS PLATFORM SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE FOR FIFA SOCCER 09". I'm very surprised and also encouraged that a PC sports game is finally getting some focus and special attention. This is exactly what we've been wanting all these years. It brings up this question... Is the NHL game for this year on the PC going to get some attention like this?

I am starting to wonder if Peter Moore is the right person to run EA Sports.  There have numerous question about EA Sports products and Mr. Moore has responded to none of them.  Does he actually read the comments left here?  Some corporate puppet probably writes the blog for him and Peter gets to put the Peter Moore name on the blog.  Most of the answers to the questions posed here are found on other EA Sports site but if we wait for Mr. Moore to tell us that then we would never know to do this.

There was a question asked by a blogger about the Head Coach release date.  The standalone release is showing a release date of September 3rd while the bundled version is showing August 12th.  If a gamer purchases the bundled version on August 12th, will he receive a Head Coach game or a voucher?  This seems like a computer glitch.  The game will either be finished by August 12th or September 3rd.  Which is it?  If it takes a month to ship a standalone version of the game then the consumer is getting the shaft once again.  I would think that the head of EA Sports could answer this question or point me to right direction for an answer but Peter Moore has not responded in any way.

We are content to talk about tennis which EA Sports doesn't make a game for and I have to look at pictures of the Butt Ugly Sisters.  This should be considered indecent exposure.  Announcing that EA Sports wants to make a tennis game might make this a relevant topic.  Peter Moore continues to ignore our questions and this continues to feel like a one-way conversation.  The head of EA Sports can't seem to talk about EA Sports products.  Yes, he is not the right person to be in charge of EA Sports.

Please port Head Coach to Wii, I will buy it asap.  I know I'm just one person, but 360 and PS3 are too expensive and there is a shortage of Wii sports titles.  So much so that you can buy College Basketball 2K3 (5 years old) on Amazon.com for $400.00 new and $100.00 used.  There's a market if people are dumb enough to pay that much for a 5 year old gamecube game because they're desperate for Wii sports titles.  Please port Head Coach to Wii!!

making a tennis game, physics wise is nearly impossible to do it right.

it always ends up being a table tennis game especially with controllers like the wii.

plus it's an incredibly dull sport to play on a console if it were done right.

i see they also got snooker simulations, it would be nice to have a good snooker game back on a console via Arcade/Playstation network.

there used to be a fun little sega megadrive snooker game, i sorta miss playing: en.wikipedia.org/.../Jimmy_White%27s_Whirlwind_Snooker

hmm i didn't know it was that old actually :D

Mr. Moore,

I am still waiting for an answer to my earlier post.  It looks like EA Sports will have MAJOR competition if they decide to launch Head Coach on September 3rd.  Fiinal Fantasy 13 has just been announced to launch on that date for PS3 and 360 platforms.  If I have a choice between Head Coach and FF13, then I am choosing FF13  99 times out of 100.  This is a game that will launch in the top 10 and will not leave the top 10 for years.  You just thought Madden was a big deal.  This is like 10 Maddens launching at once.

I am pumped.  One of the greatest games of all-time is on the horizon and I am headed to Houston to pick up the latest edition of NCAA 09.  Cashed in my change this morning and EA will have it tommorrow.  I do this every year and I have a tin full of spare changed earmarked for the new version of NCAA.  It is now time to make the trek to pick up the game.

I am very passionate about gaming as you can tell.  I wish that EA Sports had as much passion as I do.  The games would be #1 every single time and poor sales would never be discussed.  EA only shows 1/100 of my passion for gaming.  I realize that the earlier post came across in a negative light but I will never apologize for being passionate about gaming.  Communication from Peter Moore has been deficient for several months now and I wasn't the first to point this out.  I look forward to you answering our questions.

Peter,

Could you settle this debate once and for all?  Will we ever see Augusta National in a Tiger Woods game and if not, why is this so and what can be done to rectify.  If we will indeed see it then; What are you waiting for?

Thanks

If you want Augusta for TW08, then pop along to either PGAX.net or CourseDownloads.com. There are two versions on offere. One recreated by PGAX Team Design (called PGAX Masters) and the other by K.McHale. These are for the PC version of the game only of course!

Dear Mr. Moore:

In an earlier post you said, "We’re hitting this season in terms of quality and innovation stronger than we ever have at EA SPORTS.  If I’m wrong, you’ll see me sporting a new tattoo  - maybe a competitor’s logo?"

So by stronger quality, did you mean:

1. NCAA Football 09 for the 360 crashing when you try to edit rosters?

2. The CPU Sliders in the game NOT WORKING AT ALL?

3. Online dynasty mode not working, despite this really being the only 'new' feature included this year?

4. The Super-Sim mode quadrupling the number of plays that would have been in the game had you played it through?

This game is really a complete embarassment and SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN RELEASED IN THIS STATE. Seriously how does someone in QA miss the CPU slider not working? Or do you just simply not care because the sports community will buy it no matter what, because as a monopoly in NCAA football games, gamers have no choice?

I would love it if you would come out here, post an apology to the gamers that bought this game and either fix it as soon as possible or offer a refund since our local gamestop won't allow us to return it. Or you could explain what happened and why something like this happened. I somehow doubt either of those will occur and instead sometime in December we'll get a patch and/or hear about since it's so close to NCAA 2010, that the game will be abandoned to prepare for next year's DYnamic DNA feature or some such marketing nonsense.

I just feel like President Bush saying "The economy is great" or the Iraqi Foreign Minister saying "the Americans aren't here, that's just thunder" your comments about a commitment to quality are a joke.

Please, go around the marketing BS and be upfront and honest with us. Please fix it or honor refunds..or recall the game like Sierra did with Front Page Football 99.

I look forward to hearing your remarks, but I doubt we'll get anything except more marketing drivel.
