Peter Moore About Peter

Back from Season Opener

Back home after a big week up in Vancouver.  We hosted our first-ever EA SPORTS Season Opener, a showcase of most of our upcoming games for this year for media from all over the world.  It was a great chance to give early looks at our new games to media who had come from near and far to get a taste of what they can see this year from EA SPORTS.

You may have read some of the news and game previews that have come out of the event over the past few days.  A few things I wanted to highlight:

•    I’ve mentioned a number of times that a real priority for us as the gaming industry evolves is diversifying our portfolio.  We unveiled two new initiatives last week that I think we will do that.
o    We announced a new sub-brand with games designed for a broad casual sports gaming audience.  EA SPORTS Freestyle replaces EA SPORTS Big, and we plan to ship three new games in the next year under this brand.  FaceBreaker, coming in September, will be the first.  While no announcements have been made, I’m also very interested in the health and fitness space and think we can be a leader in this space.  Afterall, I was a P.E. teacher years and years ago and am excited about what we could do here.
o    We also announced an initiative for the Wii called “All-Play”.  We’re designing five of our most popular franchises exclusively for the Wii this year and they’ll feature unique controls, unique modes, unique presentation, and unique packaging.  All-Play is a much more all-encompassing design philosophy that expands significantly on last year’s Family Play control scheme in Madden, FIFA and NBA LIVE.

•    Last Wednesday, we confirmed that Fight Night Round 4 is in development and slated to release in 2009.  It was an honor to have three of boxing’s best at EAC to make the announcement.  You’ll see below that Winky Wright, Lennox Lewis and Sugar Ray Leonard look more at home in the ring that I do, but it was sure fun listening to them talk about the sport and picking their brains for ideas for Fight Night.  We obviously also listen to feedback from the fans on what you want to see in our games, and so we’re also excited to be bringing Mike Tyson back to videogame boxing for the first time in nearly a decade.  That’s something fans have been begging for.

•    I also had a chance to catch up with a number of our producers over the past week and remain really motivated by the great work that’s being done.  After we had our first announcement about this year’s Tiger Woods game last week, we had some questions about some of the new features.  So I caught up with Executive Producer Mike Taramykin and asked him to clarify a few things they have planned for this year.  Click here to see what Mike had to say.

Cheers,

Peter

Looking forward to this year. It may not be a groundbreaking pinnacle year for some franchise, but it can be a great foundation step so they can make it a groundbreaking year for 2010 or the year after (hopefully not that long).

I am looking for to FN4 and thanks for bringing back Tyson.  His life outside the ring is a train wreck however he was a boxer who could have fought in any era.  He was downright nasty.

Hopefully, we will see some of the other greats (and not so greats) such as Buster Douglas, Peter (Cocoon of Horror) McNealy (I keed, I keed) and Michael Spinks...

Also, hurry up and purchase Take Two so EA can bring a real baseball game to the 360 (oh, and bring back NCAA College Baseball)....

Mr .Moore  -A- plus for access.  This is cool to rant to you and at least feel like an intern has to tell you something about just it ,in case you get media snipered with questions at some event.  Who knows you may actually care what I write.  anyways cool to type to your photo at least..

To my point.  Just found the "action cam" pics for Madden...        Please please  I am hoping  its part of NCAA 09.  What a feature we have been missing...  I am also a fan of using the Hiesman cam during  that mode.. I wish that camera could be implemented as a choice to randomly pick a player on field, for a play during dynasty.              keep up the good work..   Ea sports is no longer some nameless faceless you ruined my  college yeeaaRRRR .. company ..  Your a standup guy Mr.Moore..  I don't understand why Ea and your last company got along so well and yes i am a Ps3 ( disgrunteld owner /hasn't lived up to hype or technology )

( i didn't like your relationship) I hated seening all those Ncaa comercials with green x's in the background.  But when you had an interview at E3 or something *** straight i tuned in..     will keep checking in here for same reasons...

Peter Moore,

I enjoy your blogs.  I want to talk to you one on one sometime because I feel that I can help the NCAA 09 title a little bit.  Please feel free to contact me at bowl40@hotmail.com.  I know that everyone knows my email now, but I don't know how I can make a difference.  I will be willing to donate time money for this cause.

Thanks for your time.

I've been checking in daily to see the alternate uniform screen shots for NCAA football 09.  I must say that the player models look great from the waist up.  I think that the makers of NCAA Football have done a great job adding to the detail of the players faces and even going as far as to put the NIKE symbol on the visors.  However, the lower portion of the player models need work.  The players look like they have kanckles and that their shoes are two sizes too small for their feet.  I also noticed that there is still no towels on the players uniform.  In the future I hope that muscle definition for the models' thighs and calfs is more accurately displayed and that there is an option for towels to be worn on the side, back of the pants, or towards the front of the players uni. I know I may be nit-picking a bit but I just wanted to add my 2 cents

Hey, Peter

I've got to say that this NCAA/college stuff is wasted on me; no disrespect, but it's like a different language, or something, because I can't regularly follow it, to start! :)

My interest is more in the NBA Street series and that crazy SNOW game (in which skis need not be reapplied :D) although I do have time for some of the more authentic sports games, from time-to-time, too.

What are BIG up to, at this time, and if you can't answer that, where's the best place to keep up with the latest from them - how closely do you track what BIG do, and will we in the future, see much about them on this blog? It would be nice to see an EA somebody mention SSX, in regard to future releases. Though, I don't think Atomika would have been dropping hints in the Burnout demo, like that, for no good reason! I hope it will return to being a fun exciting game about what it's like to snowboard, both competitively and for fun - without all the ill-fitting "punk-pop" baggage of On Tour.

well i was a disgruntled pc owner not hearing of madden  release for pc but all is well for me i own a 360

my question to you is why cant you partner with the professional pool asociation and bring us a true next gen pool game were you travel all over the world and play pros or in local pool halls and earn money move up the ranks. there are alot of us who love to play 8 ball 9 ball and would be a great game to play online. this sport has never been exploited if someone was to make a great game of it it would do well. maybe we could purchase from xbox live pool sticks special balls you name it even tables the posabilitys are endless. who wouldnt likle to play some of the old pros like minnsota fats. could you imagine all the companys that would come on board knowing there actual sticks could be cybered into games i dont know about you but i could never aford a 2000 k stick but would love to play with one.

Mr. Moore,

I just started playing NCAA 2008 again after some time off from the game so I will share some of my concerns with you and your team.  I have been playing strictly in Dynasty Mode and played once in Campus Legend.

Is it possible to get smarter recruiting assistance?  When the computer simulates this task for me in recruiting, I end up recruiting 1 or 2 star recruits or players that I don't need.  Is it possible to instruct the computer only to recruit 4 star recruits and higher?  Instructing it to recruit only positions that I show a need at would seem fairly easy to do from a programming perspecitive.  I have also noticed that the recruits on my list all visit the same people on my schedule.  How does a recruit end up signing with someone who isn't on my schedule after visiting only the schools on my schedule?  Is it possible to make promises during a recruit's visit to my school during the season?  I usually try to build up a low level school for a challenge and as a low level school I lose out on the 4 and 5 star recruits during the season.  Making promises during the season would help land these recruits.

Why do I see the same title screen when I start up the game?  Brad Nessler teaching me how to play the game gets a little old after the first 500 times of seeing him welcome me to the game.  I would like to see the customized menus once again.  There is just something magical about hearing your school's fightsong play when you start the game.  My one gripe with Campus Legend is that you don't have the option of coaching or going to Madden as in the previous years.  The Madden option is there but the coaching option has been removed.  This brings me to another point in the Dynasty Mode.  Why are the coaches for the CPU not fired for bad performance?  I remember looking at the coaches records and the Baylor coach had a 9 - 52 record.  It would be more realistic if the coaches were fired.

Just wondering 2 things.

1) Have you seen the recent influx of new talent at 38 Studios? Can't imagine there is any limit to what they are going to be able to achieve!!

2) On a more serious note. Have you decided to just raise the white towel or are you actually, seriously, considering tearing your hamstring, breaking your leg, in a vain attempt to kick a 50 yard field goal? Can you please just admit that your ego got the best of you, and that you were SERIOUSLY mistaken in your desire to prove you are still the athlete you once were? I know you were a stud soccer player......We were all studs at something, at some point.

That time is past now and for the sake of our friendship, which I hold dear, I'd like you to save yourself the pain, and embarrassment of having to be stretchered off the EA field with your lovely secretary in tow, after tearing every muscle and ligament in your kicking leg proving a point we all already know....

All the best

Curt

P.S. GO MANCHESTER U!

Hi Peter,

Please talk more about soccer games on here. I was talking to Phil Harrison when he was still will Sony, and when asked about his game of choice and he said 'Pro Evo ofcourse, just like Moore from Microsoft.'

Being a PES fan, I'd appreciate you guys talk about how Fifa is improving. The single player AI is awful, I hope with your wisdom and appreciation for your now rival will make that happen.

Thanks, great blog btw.

Peter,

Make sure you give your NCAA development team a nice pat on the back for the online dynasty feature. By all appearances thus far it looks like a fantastic new feature for the title. I read an interview where the producer said his goal was to take everything a person could do in an offline dynasty and put it online. I know I can speak for many other gamers who have yearned for this concept for years. So give those guys a bonus or something!

Now for the Madden development team...give them a swift kick in the butt. While they have added a league feature, it really is crap. They used faulty logic. People want to play their friends and peers in an online franchise mode. One that allows for each user to build and shape their teams over multiple seasons. One that accounts for injuries, progression, multi-player trades, injuries, retirement, free agency, etc. What they have done is create a glorified tournament that tracks stats. Allowing multiple users to play as one team? Having no divisions or injuries? Only having a single season? It is just a very poor thought out feature. Too bad the NCAA team did not share their vision with the Madden team. I know Madden is touting 85 new features but they dropped the ball on one BIG one.

Dear EASports Football Development Teams,

I have watched all of the videos of the upcoming game Madden 09, as well as looked at all the photos that that are available. I have noticed a common theme. The player models have not been improved for the past 3 years of next-generation Madden games. QBs, Halfbacks, Defensive-backs, Wide Receivers are all either the same size or larger than the defensive-linemen that are in these games. I watch football religiously. I have also played football on a college level and this is just one of the many things that bother me about Madden and NCAA Football Video games. EA claim is that “IF IT”S IN THE GAME, its IN THE GAME.” This is a bunch of bull. Wide receivers, Defensive Backs, etc should not be as big are bigger than Defensive Linemen. Get rid of the “Shaking Pursuit Camera” and spend more time on player models and game play problems. Who’s ever idea it was to change the play selection screen to a one play selection needs to be fired. If the average person did something that idiotic, they would be searching for work in another country. Not at EA. That is enough of my ranting for now. The people that this is for will probably never see this, or read it anyway. Please EASports, fix these problems.

I read the reports about EAs recent releases and here your notes on fitness programs for the Wii platform.

I and my international team have been working on development of a game series for 3 years that incorporates these concepts and more (copyright filed; patents applied for). Wii is the perfect platform for my design. The market is ready-made and waiting (already tested), with dedicated and multi-tiered users. Problem for me is I don't have EA's resources to polish it and bring the product to market. I've had some investor interest, but without a major backer willing to jump in first. Any chance we could arrange to have have a __real__ conversation?

Once again Mr. Moore....I'm absolutely begging! If and when you guys buy Take-Two; PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't kill the NBA 2K franchise!!!!!!!! As much as it seems like 2 games of the same sport from one compnay don't make sense; there is definitely room for 2K and NBA Live. You have 2 soccer games, 3 football games, and 2 boxing games.

And anyway, as well as NBA 2K sells, I can only imagine what it could do with the EA marketing machine. PLEASE, PLEASE, I'm sure I speak for a ton of other gamers.

Welcome back to the Bay Area as another Brit in the area I have pretty much the same thoughts as you. What I really don't get is the Twiglet hate from my fellow co-workers. I brought in a big bag of them and out of just over 30 sampled, only 4 liked them! Guess I better not bring in the marmite. Maybe having a Brit in charge will help EA make an actual decent Football game that can rival Pro Evo..
