Welcome to Peter Moore's Official Blog

In this blog you'll see what Peter thinks about sports, sports video games, and the industry in general. We hope this gives you an inside look at EA SPORTS, so please enjoy!

Peter Moore About Peter

Answering YOUR Questions!

We’re back again with more answers to some of the questions you’ve been posing to me here on the blog.  As I’ve said in the past, both myself and our development teams enjoy reading all the comments and questions that have been streaming in.  While we can’t respond to everything, I do try at least once a month to take a handful of questions straight to the teams and get the answers you are looking for.

Of course, as we get closer to launch on most of our franchises, producers will be keeping blogs and handling your questions directly on the individual product websites.

Peter: What login problems are you having?  If you are having trouble with your password, please try the “forgot password” option where your password will be e-mailed to the e-mail address you originally signed up for.  Otherwise, if you can’t remember, you could always create another account.  What parts of the site are you talking about cleaning up?  We have the latest information that’s available for our titles on there, including the Madden NFL 09 site which launched last week when we announced Brett Favre as our new cover athlete for the game.
As for the myfootballclub website, I do like to spend some of my free time on that site interacting with what they have to offer, but I mention the site because we have our own social networking sites available right now (www.easportsworld.com and www.easportsfootball.com ).  In this blog, I won’t just touch on things going on in the business of EA SPORTS, but I’ll talk about things outside EA SPORTS and the industry all together that interest me.]

“As both a PS3 and Xbox 360 owner, I'm happy that both versions of NCAA 09 Football will be running at a smooth, 60 FPS. Now, I have some variety in choosing which version of the game I want to buy! Can we expect the same from Madden '09?”

Phil Frazier: Both the PS3 and X360 versions of Madden will run at a smooth 60FPS.  Even better, while trying to squeeze performance out of each console we’ve managed to significantly improve the visuals of the game this year.

“I've been playing Madden for a long time and really enjoy the Game. The question I have is for the upcoming Madden, will there be a way to add previous version controls for Madden 09.(ie Madden 02,03,05): While some of the controls can be customized, it would be nice to pick a particular year that can be selected by the user.”

Phil Frazier: The Madden experience is tuned specifically for the default set of controls.  While there was a significant change to our control scheme when we made the jump from current to next gen, our controls each year stay mostly the same so that our fans don’t have to completely re-learn the game.  Madden 09 does not have controls from specific versions of Madden but we do offer a lot in terms of customization.  All of the customization options in the game allow any user to alter their experience so that the game delivers their exact ideal football experience.

“I just looked at a youtube video of nfl fever 2002..The makers of NFL Fever were able to use the specs of original Xbox to put towels on their player models 6 years ago...How come the makers of Madden and NCAA football still haven't figured out how to put towels and other realistic additions on their player models?”

Dale Jackson: Madden 09 features extremely realistic player models.  The models this year have been completely rebuilt, and along with the upgraded visuals, provide the most realistic looking sports game ever.  We don’t have towels this year but will make sure this gets some serious consideration for future iterations.

Phils comments here would lead you to believe that Madden each year tests the limitations of both the 360 and the PS3.  I would beg to differ.  I would be more willing to belive that both the 360 and especially the PS3 test the limitations of your developers each year.  With masterpieces like MSG 4, Drakes Fortune, GTA 4, and GT 5, EA has hardly tested the limitations of the PS3 hence EA's inability to render 60 fps in 08.  Until EA fully grasps the knowledge necessary to learn the PS3 system, I am afraid we will never see the  full potential of a Madden title.

Why does EA Sports continously ignore the Madden NFL Football PC version?  My PC has 10 times the power that any console ever thought about having and yet the PC version of the game gets shafted with less features and were still old generation in 08.

Now I am trying to pre-order madden 09 for PC and can't even find it it available is it true that EA is not making a PC version of Madden 09?

If so you will loose thousands of loyal fans forever and we will boycott every EA product made.

Bah, I've completely forgot about towels on players.

I remember seeing a preview for Madden 06 on 360. They said the towels would ty to get them in next year.

4 years later, we still don't got it.

Details go a long way.

You know the answer to that question.  Not everybody who games on a PC has a high end PC and there is no way for EA to develop this next gen game for PC.  The PC requirements to run next gen madden is too great.  Not enough people have high end enough computers to make it cost effective.  PC has too many variables.  That is why the minimum system requirements are always so low for PC games.

forget about towels on players... i would rather see towels in the crowd, alah pittsburgh steelers style...

im more worried about... these things???

do we have nets?

refs?

chain gangs?

presentation?

just to name a few...

o yeah, one more thing, are all the players goign to be Body builders this year???

when we get another game company making games to compete with the empire... lol... why would they add those things now?

we r still going to buy it, because its the only game...

another thing Mr. Moore... why does EA insist on putting a "#1 Selling Pro Football Franchise" sticker on the cover of the madden box??? Are you guys simply rubbing our noses in the fact that you stole one of the greatest games ever from US, THE GAMERS... NFL 2k5 had presentation and comentary like no one has ever seen... and i can promise you that Madden 09 will still be lacking in areas where 2k football shined....

its ok though, cuz, im not bitter...

The NCAA 09 next gen game is finally showing promise.  The player models are better and they don't look like they're running with a stick up their butt.  The custom sounds are an awesome addition, although we should be able to use at least some sounds for road games too but this is a step forward.  Crowd reaction is also better.

However, can you please ask the NCAA team why mascot mode was added and coach mode was ignored again?  Or better yet, could you ask someone on the team to put coach mode in over their lunch hour?  Their miniscule effort would go along way for thousands of older gamers, you know, those who have jobs and can afford to buy a $400 console for this game.

Make sure you give Josh Looman a raise.  He and the Head Coach team seem to be the only ones who know what football gamers want.  Maybe you could put him in charge of football gaming across the board.  Then we wouldn't have to worry about Barney modes being added every year instead of meaningful features like coach mode and create a school.

Still no response from you in regards to the posts of the loyal Madden PC gamers. Why? There have been many good points made. You could at least have some sort of response on your own blog. Since I ,and there maybe others, do not want to purchase a console and you have cancelled Madden for PC may question to you is this:

Why should we continue to support EA and its products if you do not want to make them available to us and we have been treated this way?

For this reason I consider myself a Former EA Supporter.

PC gamers who are concerned about the future of Madden should head over to www.gamedaily.com to read an interview with Peter Moore.  There is also a hint about what future football games might be like on the PC platform.  I think Timothy Daley summed up the challenges that PC gamers face with regards to Madden.

NO Ref NO Chain gang!!!! said:

Mr. Moore give me something real.... Talking about Ncaa 09  Have you seen an endzone on Saturday.  Fill-em up with camera-men.  Make the flashes pop..  Cameras in the stands flashing.

Where are the refs. I have been using them for picks on my Ps2 for years.  I would definitely love to see the next few months spent on a Chain Gang at least..  Give us that..  PLEASE.. stop it with visor alternate uni stuff.. Work on your on field presentation...  Still need to see composure work in person.. Does my freshmen running back fumble and young reciever drop balls.. That's composure...

QUESTION MARKS SHOULD BE WHERE THE PLAYER  THINKS HE IS GOING;;; PLAYERS SHOULD FORGET PLAYS....  NOT THE JUST QB INTEELIGENCE...

WAS real excited until saw game play on IGN.com  Seems too close to last year as far as play; stadiums look better..  STILL trying to justify $450 to play... come one Mr. Moore give me something for my money.. Chain Gangs and you got a sale as stupid as that sounds  better than a green whipping shirt for Notre Dame..  ps field goal nets and filled sidelines...

Oh for recruiting  Family members and old classmates connections...  same for coaching vacancies. old players... assistant coaches...  give that Michigan man thing a place in the game or the Getting a top talent to go to Colorado Like the runningback Texas lost out on..  In the game that never would happen..

half filled stadiums for bad teams.. and some booing for poor performances..

pastapadre.com for the best write up on Ncaa Football 09

Gamespot.com for the absolute best video.. you can almost see composure quiz but they cutback too late..

The game looks ten times better than ign.com piece...  the 9 min video with our favorite whipping boy Mr. Moore...    Can we get a spot on this site or Ea World to share such videos .. you endorse them , you let them to your party... just a pain guessing who will have the best video of your game you should have it..

from video No Nets  No Refs  No chain gang.. But somehow the gameplay was a little smoother as far as they didn't stay in the pre set camera angle for that long.  Ign.com was all just from the snap.. maybe the length of video???  Ign did hitch alittle in places... after snap...

DIFFERENT CAMERA ANGLES...   GAMESPOT IS CLOSER THAN IGN.COM? hmm...

little closer to forking out some cash..  Which platform..... ??? I owned a Ps3 felt i got ripped off on the hype.. And EA always uses Microsoft logos behind the Ncaa stuff.. but .. who will win the war... or will EA make an exact copy this time???

Mr. Moore, from what I've seen of the videos so far I don't see significant differernces in the way the game looks and animates in comparison to last year. For instance the QB dropback is too unrealistic with hardly any pocket forming. Will the animations be more fined tuned and fluid by release? Also, will we finally see more camera angles too add to the presentation which consumers have been asking for several years?

hahaha You Madden Sheep never cease to amaze me. Don't you know that Madden is just recycled arcade trash?  EA is all about marketing, graphics and labels to get you commercially induced morons right to the cash register to buy their annual crapfests of EA sports titles.

APF 2K8 is 100X more realistic than Madden but it wasnt given a chance because of the NFL license deal and EA knows this because all you have to do is look at video comparisons of Madden vs  APF 2K8 and you see how much better 2K8 is. EA counted on the weak minded commercially induced gamer generation to NOT LOOK FOR QUALITY BUT FLASH TO BLIND THEM and it worked.

Remember kiddos you can polish a turd but its still a turd.

Quote by Peter Moore: "In this blog, I won’t just touch on things going on in the business of EA SPORTS, but I’ll talk about things outside EA SPORTS and the industry all together that interest me".

Mr Moore

Is Golf an interest for you also? There's more than a few thousand of us who play the PC version of Tigerwoods PGA Tour and although it is good to see all the other platforms available to preorder on the new TW09 web page, there has been absolute silence regarding a PC version. Are you in a position to update us yet on this situation? Is there going to be a PC version or not?

I certainly hope there is going to be a release as the website I part own is dedicated to this game and offer the only online tournament that mirrors the real PGA Tour with the same courses recreated by us and released freely each week, for Expert level players. http://www.pgax.net

Maybe you Peter, and/or some of your guys might like to give it a go? Come along and poke your head round our door and see what we are doing with this great game! We may suprise you!

We design as a team and I am obtaining help in the form of research materials, photos and design drawings from the real course architects. Plus we also have PGA Pro caddies and a couple of the real Pro's helping with our design work and/or playing our tour under aliases....we want this game to live on and are doing a lot to create better awareness which surely benefits yourselves. We even have video flyovers on Youtube...just enter our name in the youtube seach bar.

Our site is free, our tour is free and our courses are free. We don't ask for donations nor do we accept them. Our site costs are borne by myself and my two fellow site owners, for the love of Golf, the PC version of Tigerwoods PGA Tour and our members situated all over the world.

So please Peter, give us some news, even if it's not what you think we may wish to hear....at least then we will know where we stand and can plan accordingly for our next year's online tour and courses.

Many thanks

Hello, Peter. I have one question for you. I'm not happy, that many sport titles was cancelled on PC, but i get it. Piracy is really bad, for PC gaming. But I also think, that PC version of sport games are really old. My heart always crying, when I see, how great graphics and gameplay are on console version of the game. There is no doubt, that gamers are not going to buy NHL 08, because it is three years old games without any progress. I repeat, WITHOUT ANY PROGRESS. In 2006 I bought NHL 07 and i was dissapointed, very dissapointed, but I found on internet, that next NHL game on PC will be truly next-gen and then I saw the screens from PC version of NHL 08. Please, don't promise anything, if you can't realize it. So, one simple question, can I look forward to NHL 09 on PC? Just yes or no. Thank you and sorry for my bad english.

I am still laughing about the guy who says the PC would need to be really powerful to run the new madden engine. Even a midrange card like the 8600GTS has more GFX horsepower then the Xbox 360 and 2GB of ram is nothing on a modern PC dual core CPUs are abundent and cheap. Anyway doesn't matter EA canceled most of their sports titles for the PC because well I am not going to go into detail about how dumb they are I think it is self explanatory.

Dear Phil Frazier,

I love the changes to the game that I have seen. Why not update the equipment that the players wear? Those long white/black things that look like socks that is supposed to be tape, get rid of it, please. Most players in the NFL wear Nike cleats, I know Reebok is the uniform sponsor but not the shoes, so please change this. While at it, add the teams’ colors to the shoes. We need official gloves, not just the primary color of the team, orange Chi. Bears’ gloves (and orange cleats). We Need Horse Collars, Neck-Roll, Cowboy-Collars, Rib-Protectors, Hand-warmers, Eye-paint….Where is all of the things that the NFL player wears? Fix the player model sizes. Linebackers should not be as large are larger then D-linemen. Change the play selection back to what it was for last-gen. Even the Wii Madden got it right. CPU vs. CPU. Let me watch the games. Make us love Madden Football games again. PLEASE!!!

Mr. Moore,

Thanks for responding to my question about the frame rate in Madden '09--glad to hear that our thoughts are actually being seriously considered and not pushed aside. My question deals with stadiums in Madden '09, or more specifically, stadium names.  As a proud, Chicago Bears fan all my life, I'm quite disappointed that on last year's madden it lists the Bears' stadium name as "Chicago Stadium."  Mr. Moore, the stadium's actual name is Soldier Field, and it is one of the most historic sites in NFL History.  Please change this in Madden '09. I'll give you guys the benefit of the doubt and maybe you can't include the real name in the game because it is copyrighted or something--but please tell us so that we can stop blaming your development teams for factors that are out of your control.  Thanks again for listening to our concerns.

Hello PC Gamers:

The PC version on Madden obviously doesn't generate enough revenue for EA to continue.  It's not actually about piracy (even though that does enter into it as it does take away from generated revenue), It's about how much money does EA get back each year with the investment on the PC version.  Everyone wants to scream & complain about EA dropping the PC platform on Madden & other sports games.  If they $$$ was there, the platforms wouldn't be dropped.  It's easy to call EA dumb (but they aren't if they drop something that doesn't make the money it needs to), finger point to Peter Moore or others within the decision making process but it's all about the dollars.  EA has partnership deals with the major sports leagues, these are not just agreements but profit partnerships.  If the production/profit dollar ratio is better on console games & PC platforms are profit losers, well it's not hard to figure out why the PC version has been dropped.  I have seen so many posts from "former EA supporters" & "EA boycotters" in reference to their "favorite" platform being dropped.  Well what about the shareholders & the people that are responsible for showing profit numbers.  Honestly, do you think they should support the "disappointed" PC gamer crowd but produce games/platforms that do not show profit?  Ask yourself. "Is that REALLY smart business?".

It's all about the $$$ guys, not the "disappointed", the "unsupported", the "loyal" PC crowd.  Money is what drives this market & every other market.  As sad as that is, it's reality.

Steve: Very well said post.

The reason I consider myself a former EA suporter is the PC is my platform and since Madden PC was dropped along with other PC titles there are no products from EA for me to purchase. I do not own a console and since I am happy with the PC it is not in my interest to go out and buy one just to play Madden. So no further purchases means no further support.

I understand your post and about it not being profitable to continue the Madden PC and how it is a business decison and it's about the $$$.  I'm disappointed that Peter and whoever else was involved in that decision couldn't have at least given us PC'rs this last one Madden so we coud've enjoyed the Madden 20th Anniversary along with everyone else.

Peter, I would like to ask you again: If PC is not profitable for you at this time and you do not want our business(unless its for a console)if you do bring back any PC titles, why should we come back to supprt them? I'm not asking this as an insult I'm just trying to get straightforward and honest answer.

I think the comment that the PC was dropped for Madden because it did not make any money is horse ***. You are going to tell me that the Nintendo DS version of the game makes more money than the PC Version?

Truth is, they can do whatever they want, they have the monopoly, were screwed. I look at it this way, I will just find another football game to run, or just mod the *** rosters and play with what we have. Hell it's not like they did anything to improve the game since 06.

If you tell me that the DS sold more than PC I will buy the making no money comment. As for the power of the PCs? I will not buy another ea game again, no sports, no sims, no anything.

Peter!

When is the NHL games going to adopt a "career mode" like in the Madden series, or in MLB 08 the Show.  The NHL games are great, and the areas for improvement are shrinking.. the only thing that would really shake up the game and jazz it up is a first person career mode, from getting drafted and signing with a team, to choices made in interactions with fans and media... You see how popular those modes are in other games, people are hooked on the whole SIMS franchise... marry the two together and give us the chance to live a life of a NHL'er... And give it some serious depth, not just a half attempt....!!!

The PC game obviously doesn't make enough to justify the research & development is why.  They only have to make 1 version for each console as they are not modded with video cards, memory, sound cards, different OS's & etc...  So yes, when you take the research & devolopment opposed to the profit margins, the reasoning is pretty clear.  The Nintendo DS version due to no fine tuning needed and easy confifurating for all DS units DOES ultimately cost less to produce & make more profit.  When is the last time you saw a pirated Nintendo DS version?  EA didn't drop the PC version to make people mad.  They didn't do it to "screw" the PC crowd.  This type of thinking makes no sense.  Why are people making this so personal, I understand being unhappy about the platform drop but please explain how "screwing" the PC crowd helps EA.  Please explain how dropping (if it was, and it's not) such a profitable platform benefits EA?  Does it make sense of the profit was worth the R & D, EA would drop the PC game?  This is about profit & loss, nothing more, nothing less.

I am a PC player also, have been for a loooong time but I do understand why EA dropped the platform.  It needs to be said again (obviously) it's about the dough, moolah, dinero, dollars, bucks, coin, cash...

To me, after buying Madden PC for years and not to include us PC Players as part of the Madden 20th Anniversary I felt was personal insult by EA.

In my opinon EA should not place the entire blame(profits) for dropping the Madden PC platform on the PC player. They need to share some of the blame. I feel that over the years they have lessened their focus($$, R/D) on the Madden PC platform and their sales(profits) have shown that. I've seen many posts in the forums suggestiing great ideas for Madden games. I do not know how many of those were taken into consideration but if EA wanted to increase Madden PC sales(profits) then they should have found a way to work more closely with the PC players to find out what the game needs to have so that more people would buy it. More sales more profits on the game which would allow for it to continue to improve.

There isn't any doubt EA understands the gaming market & what sells & doesn't sell.  EA also understands the return for effort on the dollar on what platforms are worth the R & D.  The point of contention that if the game was "better" there would be more PC players really doesn't hold water.   There are many, many more console players than PC players for all games and that isn't exclusive to EA's perceived lack of focus on the PC platform.  It's much more of players lack of commitment to the PC platform and EA realizing that and moving forward accordingly.  Many gaming manufactures have now stopped producing games for the PC, this isn't something only done by EA or started by EA.  It is done due to console sales & lack of PC game sales.  Maybe all gaming manufactures share blame but if the configurations are easier for console and the dollar for dollar return is that much more (and it sure seems like it is or so many gaming manufactures wouldn't have stopped PC game production,) do you really blame the companies for going for the money?  Who here would stay at there present job (even after your boss showed you many years of loyality) for another industry you KNOW would make you more money??   Here's to betting very few but when others do it, we feel burned or abused.  Nothing said here is going change how people feel, this is a passionate subject with some for sure.  But looked at objectively and from a money making/business standpoint (which companies have to, no matter how much it sucks sometimes), it's crystal clear that this is just about bang for their buck as far as the gaming industry is concerned.  They improve the games/paltforms that sell, too bad it's consoles but thats what makes them the most money with the least R & D/configuration/game stealing headaches.  With the $$$ made on consoles with the piracy figured in, the return is still great enough to not worry about it.  With the PC platform guess it isn't.  I agree EA had to pick the 20th anniversary to drop the PC platform is no fun for we PC players, but lest we forget the game wasn't started on PC, it started on console (Sega Genesis).  Although it truely does suck there is no PC version this year, after 20 years of Madden it's still the consoles that EA is making games for and they haven't strayed that far from their original roots when looked at objectively.

Hey Peter!

Not to be pitching any ideas or anything but i think that it would be great if ea made a lacrosse game.  Lacrosse if the fastest growing sport in the nation. The more and more people that play lacrosse the more people will want this to game to be made. I think the game would be similar to a hockey style game but on a field and in the air. Another part of the game that could be included could be a shop like place in the game where the player can buy all different types of items. For example, while playing in a game their stick could break and they would have to buy a new one or use a back up stick. Also their could be a career mode where the player tries to get signed by a professional team from a well known lacrosse college. Another idea that came to me was to have a career mode witch could include a full all star fan selected team. Their also could be some mini games which could include a trick competition, one on ones, and shooting drills. If you think my idea would be cool but would never happen i wont take offense to any comments.
