Peter Moore About Peter EA Support

Brett Favre is the Madden NFL 09 Cover Guy!

As you may have heard by now, we tonight announced Brett Favre as our cover athlete for Madden NFL 09. Brett unveiled the new packaging on The Late Show with David Letterman, and I was proud to be present at the taping to see the announcement first hand.

It is with great pride that we take the bold step of featuring a retired player on the front of packaging, an honor normally reserved for a player at the peak of his game. I say with great pride, because some may question the marketing strategy behind this (and many at EA did just that, quite frankly). I don't for one minute.

In this, the 20th year of this storied game franchise, as far as I was concerned there was only one choice. As we look back over the past couple of decades in the NFL, Brett stands out to me personally as a beacon for everything that made me a huge fan of this great game from almost the moment I arrived from the UK in the early eighties (and became a fan of the LA Rams, with Vince Ferragamo at QB, but that’s a story for another posting…).

Forget all of his record-breaking stats – it was his approach to every game he played, his leadership and spirit on the field, his “gun-slinger” style in an era of robotic QB’s, and most of all the way he wore his heart on his sleeve for us all to see. I can’t forget the Monday night game versus the Raiders the night after his father unexpectedly died, when he threw for 399 yards and four touchdowns. Unless you were wearing silver and black that night, you both cheered and cried for him.

His fight with addiction to prescription drugs, his wife Deanna’s battle with cancer soon after his father died…all of this makes this good old boy from Mississippi one of my favorite players of all time. Nobody deserves more to be on the cover of our game this year than Brett Favre. So you can question whether having a retired player on the cover is a smart move, but we made this decision for one reason, and one reason alone… because it was the right thing to do.

Peter,

As a Bears fan, it kind of sucks to see a Packer on the cover of Madden! But Favre certainly deserved it. After the season he had last year and his historic NFL career, I think it's the perfect cover athlete to celebrate the "legendary" status of Madden's 20th anniversary. Suprised to hear that some of your co-workers thought it was bad marketing to put Favre on the cover. I always thought that the stuff lies inside the box (i.e. game itself) rather than which player is on the outside. Anyway, best of luck to you guys as you continue to work on Madden '09.  One question: Can you please change the name of the Chicago Bears's stadium to "Soldier Field" rarther than "Chicago Stadium? for '09?

I dont thnk Brett should get the cover.  2 QB's on the cover back to back?  He wont even be "In The Game".  So now are they goign to treat the Cover of Madden like the cover of NCAA?  I know, they are trying to get rid of the Madden curse, so they get someone who isnt even goign to play...... oh wait that means it will still be the worst statistical year for Brett Farve.  Stupid choice EA.

They couldn't have picked a better player to represent their game.

Longstanding fan favorite and Hall of Famer

Reliable

Peaked in the 90s

Has gotten worse with age

Gets by more on reputation than actual ability

People still hope to see the "old Favre"

Every now and then can excite you, but the novelty wears off

The media gushes over him, to the point of blind love

Honestly... if that doesn't encapsulate the Madden franchise, I don't know what does.

This sucks... He is not even on the game and he’s the cover man?! There are so many other players (still playing) that deserve this. The Pats went 19-1 and neither Moss nor Brady gets the cover. Eli Manning Played Great Through the playoffs took his team to the big game and won but you pick Brett. I love Favre, and congratulate to him on this, but E A Sports made a bad call.

Will he be on the starting roster for 09? I mean I see him in the then and now video walking to the huddle but is he in the game? I don't think his retirement paperwork is complete so if the game gets made before this then he can right?

really guys? really? you're all so pissed over the COVER OF A VIDEO GAME? i mean seriously, come on. does the cover affect the game in any way, shape or form? no, not at all. Brett Favre had a (by most standards) fantastic career and was loved possibly as much as any football player ever has been. and for the 20th year of Madden you need something a little more special than just a typical cover of a "peaking player" anyway. so really... quit being a bunch of babies and deal with it. you shouldn't be buying the game because of who is on the cover anyway.. if it really bothers you that much take the cover out when you buy it!

Get a grip man.  Nobody buys Madden b/c of the cover.  The game could be in a plain white box and everyone will still buy it.  20yrs of Madden represents a historic era and who better to portray that on the cover of Madden other than Brett Favre.

The cover person has and should have nothing to do with being in the game.  Maddens cover is generally theme based and this years theme is celebrating 20 yrs of superior football gaming and Brett Favre is a solid choice to reflect this.

Thinking they did this to dispel the Madden curse is simply rediculous.  You are obviously pretty young and don't understand the reasoning behind the choice.  FYI, Favre probably will be in the game as one of the historic players that are usually in the game so your theory on that is probably bunk.

I think it was a great choice. Brett Farve is, The Iron Man, as far as i'm concerned. I hope the game is as great as the cover will be. P.S. Please keep making it for Xbox. The 360 version stinks. Thanks

Great way to break the madden curse once and for all.  He can't have a crappy season or get hurt during a game because he's not playing.  Its all about the curse

Brett Favre has earned the right to be on cover of Madden.  It may have come too late but he has earned it.  Everyone needs to calm and think about a few things.

Are we sure that he is not in the game?  A few years back you could unlock retired player via Madden Cards.  I don't think that Madden Cards were back this past year.  The point is that the people who are screaming that Favre isn't in the game might be mistaken.  This was a really cool feature a few years back and I would love to see it make a return.  If EA Sports brings out that stupid PDA feature again then I will stop buying Madden games for good on any platform.

It was well deserved. I couldn't have think of anyone better to pick. He fits the Madden cover perfect since they have much in common. He has had many moments in his career that will always standout.

Whoever mentioned the word Mcnair and Favre in the same sentence needs to rethink that again.  Mcnair was a decent QB and on the "bubble" for the hall of fame....Favre has punched his ticket long time ago.  Having Favre on the cover isn't a bad idea though.

I'm not a serious gamer, and the last Madden I bought was 2004, but I'm a big Favre fan, and I will buy Madden '09 because Favre is on the cover.  I'm totally serious.

Yo Peter,

FYI Favre had 4 TD's against the Raiders. He had already thrown all 4 (and 311 yards) in the first half:

Srsly, WTF?  Did you really bleep out the word "breast"?

Not bad... as a Giants' fan I was hoping for Strahan flexing on the cover, but Favre will do. Two quick questions though:

1) Will Madden 09 FINALLY support 1080i/p resolution on the PS3 (for the 1080i-only HDTV owners)?

2) Will Madden 09 on the Wii actually see a graphical upgrade over it's (original) Xbox & PS2 counter-parts this year?

as a HUGE packer fan and favre fan, i am definatly buying madden09! but its just the cover guys, people are sayign  moss and brady should be on the cover...RUBISH,B.S.....favre is on the cover because hes a little more special, what he brought to the game wass fenominal, brady and moss have no sportsmanship, they didnt even shake hands, and quit the probowl. F them. its the 20th year edition, favres oin it cuz hes alittle more, jus remembr...its a COVER.

Brett Farve deserves the cover he has had one of the greatest careers ever one of the most exciting QB's to ever play the game and its the 20th year edition and he's been around for nearly 20 yrs so what better choice then the one and only Brett Farve

Peter, what will it take to get a copy of ncaa football 09 and nfl manager for the 360 in the UK?  I will import a US 360 if need be but i would rather try EA first and see if there is a conformation of a UK release.  (or even a sly region free back hander!!!!!!!)

What's happening with the PC version of Madden?

Mannificent said:

April 28, 2008 9:46 AM

Peter, I have read some interviews and have been impressed with the new features in Madden, mainly around online leagues, being implemented.  I didn't buy Madden last year for the 1st time in over 15 yrs because the poor regressive devlopment, no online leagues and better product from the competition.  I hope to be swayed back - what would really do it is:  Allow leagues to have computer run teams and/or allow admins to sub in computer ownership for a human owner that has gone MIA (biggest problem of online leagues is loser's quitting).   Doing this would ensure continuity for online leagues and make your product a huge online success.  Thanks for listening.

how is it that we can celebrate the 20th year of Madden NFL and then turn around and delete all PC users.  There are millions of players that dont have next gen systems and dont want them.  The PC has better graphics and better attributes.  Okay so it takes a little more to put it together, so ask for more money like you have done with the other platforms.  Bottom line i have been with madden PC since 03 i have develop a club, web pages and forums.  So has other clubs.  Why would you delete a game that has that many valued customers.    Come on Peter give us our favorite game on PC.

Peter, I am extremely disappointed to hear Madden will not be on the PC. I have been a loyal EA Sports fan since John Madden himself graced the covers of the game. I will no longer support or buy EA products again until this travesty is fixed. Thank you for taking the time to read this and consider this opinion.
