Welcome to Peter Moore's Official Blog

In this blog you'll see what Peter thinks about sports, sports video games, and the industry in general. We hope this gives you an inside look at EA SPORTS, so please enjoy!

Peter Moore About Peter EA Support

Cheating, Hot Zones and Approachability

As I’ve mentioned previously, I enjoy reading a lot of the very colorful comments many of you have been providing on my blog.  I now regularly take many of the ideas and questions I see straight to our development teams and look for answers.  I figured it would only make sense if I started sharing some of what I've been finding out.

Again, the best way to get the scoop is to go straight to the source – our production teams.  And about once a month or so, I’ll be trying to report back at least a handful of answers to your most commonly asked questions. Of course, as we get closer to launch on many of this year’s games you’ll want to view our producer blogs on each product website as well for even more detail.

This week, we talk NBA LIVE and Madden.

Tim G says “There's stuff that should just not happen in basketball games when there's no pressure on your character; going out of bounds on an inbound, stepping back over center court. There’s a lot of frustrating issues in both games but Live they are far more prevalent. Also the "Hot Zones" are quite obnoxious looking. Colouring the entire court during play is ridiculous, and 2k's solution of cell-phone-style signal bars is much better.”

Here’s what Brian Ullrich, our line producer for NBA LIVE had to say about hotzones:

“We built our hotzones based on the real hotspots tracked by the NBA, so the look was based on that.  We found we had to add a third color (the NBA ones are red, blue, and a kind of brown color) to make them understandable.  We didn't have as much rendering or systems support on hotzones as we would have liked. The hotzones were done late in the schedule and there wasn't much time to iterate on them once they were done.  We tried a bunch of color combinations and found the ones the best we could do in the time we had. We are improving them significantly this year so stay tuned.”

Regarding Inbounds/Center Court Issues, Brian says:

“We had many problems around accurately determining exactly where all of a player's limbs are with respect to out of bounds.  At the end of last year this resulted in players being called out of bounds more than they should have, just through the act of receiving a pass, dribbling in place, etc.  The only way we could fix it was to make the out of bounds call pretty generous.  Usually the camera is far enough away that you don't notice this, but when you look at plays on instant replay it becomes noticeable.  We will be tuning this again this year, and it will be better, but this is something I doubt we’ll ever be able to keep it from happening in all cases.”

AJ says, “My league has been running now since Madden 06. We love being able to draft our teams from scratch and taking them online and playing a full 16 game schedule and playoffs included. Problem is this year there are no stats after the games? Why not Mr. Moore? I ask you to allow us to have the stats of our games, custom teams or not.”

Here’s what Dale Jackson, our Executive Producer for Madden NFL told me:

“Year after year, the discussion of league play and stat tracking has been a recurring theme in feedback on Madden.  Madden NFL 09 will address this feedback directly.  Without giving too much away, let’s just say that those who enjoy online stats won’t be disappointed.  Based on the amount we see this requested in forums, we’re very excited about our features we have planned here.”

Ron says, “ Mr. Moore, I recall in an interview with Game Informer you mentioned something along the lines of making Madden more playable for casual gamers. Is there way to customize the engine to satisfy the casual as well as the hardcore gamer who wants more simulation and realism? For instance why not just create a separate arcade mode for the casual user who knows very little about football. This can possibly perhaps increase your sales which from what I understand decreased last year.”

Great question, Ron.  I’ll take this one first. I’m passionate about making our games more approachable without “dumbing down” the experience.  Sometimes that means new modes (as you point out), sometimes that means creating different control schemes (as we did last year with Family Play on our Wii games), but it’s also very important that this also mean creating approachability in our core game experiences as well.  Tuning our games to be fun and approachable regardless of what your skill level is at first and making them adapt to meet your skill level.

Here’s Dale’s take on this:

“Designing features that make the game more approachable while also adding a layer of depth for the hardcore can be tricky.  Madden NFL 09 has new features that adapt the experience to be fun no matter what your level of skill.  On top of that, it’s highly customizable for those that enjoy tweaking the game themselves.”

Smokecapone says, “What are you guys going to do about cheating in online gaming?  I play Madden religiously (PS3) even though the game is not what it is on the PS2. I get tired like many others that play the game the way it’s played in reality to go home from work or whatever and relax and chill by playing a quick game online only to be cheated because the idiot can’t pick up on basic controls of Madden."

More from Dale:

“I spend a lot of time playing online as well and have fallen victim to the same cheats or glitches that many have complained about.  Believe me, nothing makes the team more angry than to see folks using these to ruin the experience of honest Madden players.  We're constantly reading the boards and reviewing game logs to hunt down any major issues.  Through a few patches for Madden 08, we greatly reduced the number of major cheats in the game.  We’ll be even more diligent for Madden NFL 09 and will patch any serious glitch or cheat that’s discovered. All issues reported by the community from the 08 product have already been addressed in 09.”

Again, as much as I'd like to, there’s no way I can respond to every question I get on here.  But I'll do my best to address as many key themes as I can.  Much more of this to come.

will Madden NFL 09 on the PS3 be the same as the XB 360 version of Madden NFL 09 or will the PS3 version still run at 30 fps while the 360 version ran at 60fps last year

madden 09  should have multiple ref crews with there own penalty style calling it is a fact that each crew calls alot of a certain penalty and ea has never addressed the issue of having tons of crews. its not hard to cyber a few and to add the voice to each head linesman.

i also want to see the qb or punter or fg kicker holder botch the snaps over shoot the punter the qb botches the snap or the holder drops the ball. why cant we on fg kicks be the holder were we grab the ball from mid air only to set it down and turn the laces and tilt the ball to our kickerks

klicking style that would be more exciting than moving a arror and kick meter.

another thing when playing madden im tired of beating the good teams with current good records only to loose to the crappy ones there is no drama in that. random weather you should be able to change your players cleates to get more traction in bad weather but loose speed. so you give to get. your qb playcalling screen should be a zoom in to the qbs wrist band so your looking at his arm with a list of plays that woud be a change. and on replays instead of the ea symbol why cant we see the team that made the key plays own teams logo and on your overlays mack them more metallic looking.

Kudos Peter for getting these questions answered.  It shows that you are actually tuning into the community and relaying the information to the dev teams.

Yeah Thanks Pete ( I can call you pete right? lol) I really do appreciate you getting to my post out of the thousands that post on these forums. I really do have a glimmer of hope that you guys are getting the job done even though we think its going slow as far these things being requested and complained about. Just Please dont let features become gimmicks, anything thats new feature wise is not a feature at all if its already done in the NFL or have been in previous installments of Madden.

But like I said earlier I appreciate you getting to my comment about madden and cheating I hope you guys start banning these people that ruin the online experience. They will still buy madden every so you dont have to worry about that.

how is the game fun when all you can do is watch and evreyone can do the same thing. its like buying a dvd that cost 400+60 bucks. madden 09 shouldnt be more then $3. ea get rid of the madden challenge please if anyone can win what fun is it. and why put that garbage on tv on top of that.

casual vs hardcore if anyone can play the game then... if real football was like that then peter moore would be playing in the nfl and would have as good of a chance of making the pro bowl as tom brady. am i missing something here, hows this suppose to help sales?

Thanks for giving us some A's to the Q's. Much appreciated. I hope the NHL team will be taking the same approach as Madden team. Two glitches and cheats in NHL 08 has really hurt NHL online, particularly on the PS3 version.

Great seeing you post actual questions Peter.  Communication with EA has been night and day since you've come on board.  I know alot of people are after cosmetic changes in Madden such as uniforms and muscles and beads of sweat.  However a great many fans of Madden as you know are the hardcore franchise players.  My question is will most or all of the last gen features finally make it to next gen.  I saw in NCAA 09 that smart routes will be returning which is AWESOME..  Needs to be in Madden..  Will it be?  Also will Offensive line shfts be making a welcome return as well?  I have high hopes this year.  I am hoping head coach will be linked with Madden in more ways than just custom plays.  I hope the off season activities that head coach has will be implemented into Madden.  You're getting close Peter make them do it!!

Peter,

First let me say how glad I am that you are taking out the time to answer questions.  My questions is this; why are there features in NCAA that are not in Madden.  I think the products would benefit from using some of the things in each.  For instance I was sooooo excited to see the snapshots and videos that could be taken straight from our NCAA game but when Madden came out these features did not even exist.  What sense does that make?  That was a great feature that would have only extended the playing experience for Madden.  If you could address that for me, I'd appreciate it and also if the two teams will work together in the future.

DYNASTY! DYNASTY! DYNASTY!

Hi Peter,

I hope this post doesn't get lost in the so many posts that are here. Anyhow, I personally think that as a gamer, what has made my experience incredible has been the type of dynasty mode. For example, one of the best Dynasty mode of all time was MVP 2005. I felt that for the first time, and at this point as well as the last time, that Dynasty mode made you feel like an owner/GM/Coach/Player all in one.

I would love to see all EA sports game to provide the same depth with their dynasty mode, for example, at a high level:

- finace management

- trade and contracts

- dealing with the press

- marketing your team

- basic role-palying progression with players

- customizable teams (create a team, create a sadium, etc.)

- real consequences for wining and losing..as in the way the affect all of the above

I'm sure I have few others up my sleve, but I wanted to express at least that.

Thank you for your time,

X

p.s. If you need a project manager to head that up, give me a ring. ;)

i really wish they would do a better job of stat clearing.i wouldnt have as many losses as I have because majority of them came from the glitch I said above.

Keep up the good work Mr. Moore,I am peeved ea fan this week...lol

I just want to echo with others have said about online play in Madden. I sincerely hope that these "glitches" are fixed in the next installment. A vast majority of us play online, so it is a real big deal for us. I would love to come home after work and get in a "good" game of Madden without worry about if the person is going to cheat the game away from you. Is there going to be any patches to address the current problems or are we to suffer in the '09 comes out.

My problem with MarchMadness and live is that lottery drafts from MM can't transfer to live the same way Madden and NCAA does. why can't we have that same in-depthness for basketball games like for football games? sports is sports it's not like you all have to build a new action game. I find it very irritating to finish both basketball games and it's not what i expected as i usually do for the football games (which i do most enjoy). Do you only think about those who don't really play sports games? The basketball franchise modes need major improvement. Heres a hint ( YOU SHOULD LOOK AT THE MADDEN AND NCAA GAMES)!

this is a complaint about the custom direction pad audibles that can be set for the ps2 (see page 7 of the ps2 manual for madden 2009.  If you are playing a ranked game online and try to call a custom audible the game ends automatically and both players receive a quit for the game on their record.  However when people are losing games now they use this as a way of getting even with some one is defeating them in an online game.  when losing they simply call a direction pad audible to give their opponent an automatic loss.

I have turned them in online but this NEVER GETS RESULTS.  ALSO people keep taking free wins online and it clearly shows on their recent game record such as 22-0 wins over and over vs the same opponent name with same teams, just to abuse the rank system, and YES THEY GET AWAY WITH IT, nothing is done about their accounts,  SO I GUESS THIS IS ENCOURAGED. CHEAT AWAY PEOPLE.

mike said:

January 12, 2009 11:58 AM

Ea added the custom directional pad audibles in Madden 2009 (explained on page 7 of the manual)  as a way of adding 4 more audibles to the 5 you already have.  Then EA apparantly decided that this was too much of an advantage for an online ranked game.  So they fixed this by adding an end game glitch to anyone who tried to call a direction pad audible in the game.  Just try it out if you dont believe me,  create a custom audible in practice mode and then hit the exact buttons in an online ranked game,   the game will end and you and your opponent will get a quit slash loss.  SO HOW DOES THIS PROBLEM GO UNRECOGNIZED BY THE COMPANY WHEN THEY TEST THIS GAME?  I am stunned at how easy this could have been found and that they didnt find it. I mean come on your NEWEST FEATURE CAUSES A GLITCH HELLO!!!!!    Oh  wait im not done yet , custom audibles will also permantly crash your memory card. Yes thats right their newest feature can destroy your memory card,  real nice huh?
