Peter Moore About Peter

March 26th

So it’s 6am Sunday and I’m here in the office at Redwood Shores. Why? Workaholic? Nope. Stupid? It has been said. No, I’m watching my Mighty Reds vs. Man U on Setanta Sports in the EA SPORTS Bar…
And I wish I had never bothered. Down to 10 men after Mascherano’s completely avoidable red card (never get in the referee’s face while you already have a yellow card), Liverpool look second-rate in the face of the United onslaught, and any dreams of a Premier League title this year are now dashed once-and-for-all.

On a more positive note, as you probably know, all of our development work and brand and product marketing is conducted in our studios in Vancouver (EAC) and Orlando (Tiburon).  I spend a lot of time at both studios, and this past Thursday was a particularly fun trip for me up to EAC in the Vancouver suburb of Burnaby. Purpose of my trip was to spend a day with our very talented FIFA team. It was both an educational as well as motivating day for me. I got to visit with many of the team at their workstations, and get a deeper understanding of the work we doing to maintain our positive momentum in the very competitive soccer category. It was also personally fulfilling to me to interact with so many teammates that are supremely passionate about their work (as well as “the beautiful game”).

While I can’t divulge much about what I saw as we prepare for a busy soccer year, with our Euro 2008 game shipping in advance of the tournament being held in Austria and Switzerland, and then of course our FIFA game later in the year, I can tell you that the team continues to do stellar work. Anyone that is a fan of the franchise has every reason to feel excited about what is on tap for 2008.  I also should mention that one of the best moments of my day was getting out on the pitch and playing some soccer at lunch time with the team.  Here’s a picture of the team.

You’ve also heard me start to talk about what a special year this is going to be for EA SPORTS with the 20th anniversary of Madden upon us.  As our planning and development continues to kick into high gear, I can promise you this is going to be a year to remember.  Even though I have people starting to stop me in the halls even at EA trying to get the latest scoop on this year’s game — who’s going to be on the cover, what bands are on the soundtrack, what are Tom Brady’s ratings going to be, etc. — I’m sworn  to secrecy to not divulge too many details until next month.  But I can tell you this, we do have some news to announce in the next day or two.  Keep an eye out for the first in what will be a series of announcements over the next few months about the Madden 20th anniversary...

As a preview to my next posting take a look at the following web site: http://www.myfootballclub.co.uk/index

For the princely sum of £35 (about $75), I am an part “owner” of the club. It is a fascinating experiment in social networking applied to sports. Stay tuned for a interview with Will Brooks, a UK sports journalist who is the creator of the concept.

I'd be remiss if I didn’t mention the start of the NCAA Tournament last weekend.  If only I had put a little more faith into the simulation we ran with our NCAA March Madness 08 game engine, which correctly predicted 13 of the Sweet 16, I wouldn’t be bringing up the rear in our friendly EA office pool.  That’s right, I’m in DEAD LAST.  I have to say, kind of an embarrassing.  But, what do I know about college basketball?

Looking forwards to the Madden news. It has a lot to prove this year, so for the development team and community sake, it has a great year quality wise.

peter u keep saying its gona be a special yr but i hear diffrently. now i know you love feedback but the only feedback you guys seem to take is from online dudes. 90% of the people who buy madden dont play online.

i been playing madden for along time and have evrey madden on xbox,ps2,360 since 02-08 and the madden communty seems dead ever since making xbox360 the main console at the madden challenge, and the only console ea cares about. but do you guys realize most people are not gona pay 349.99 for a video game console. thats my point even tho the gameplay is horrible in 08, its all about the money. ya you guys will make profits but 2010 is not gona be promising, i gurentee you that.

1 more thing, why is ea trying to make the game so evreyone can play? i feel 08 is watching the cpu play, im not getting to play, the cpu ai is so good i just put down the controller after picking a play and thats not fun. but from a person opinion thats not good becuase im not good at madden, i rather have the game take skill becuase it motivates me to get better. but next gen madden is just whoevers cpu plays better for them wins. but hey i still love easports but i dont think im gona get 09 unless your a man of your word and make my words here wrong because i sure hope its a specail year but im not confident. but hey its just a video game so maybe im trying to hard to tell you guys, its not that important. but again i still respect ea so....

EA SPORTS ITS IN THE GAME

The PC Version of Madden I think 2k1 used to have online franchise.  We could play our games, have live drafts etc...  We ran a franchise only for years with this.

Is there any hope of seeing that mode make a comeback?  It is pretty sad that they took this feature out of madden and haven't ever put it back in.

"Anyone that is a fan of the franchise has every reason to feel excited about what is on tap for 2008."

Yeah! Once again EA offers the possibility to buy full price add-ons not only once but twice a year! First Euro 2008 (well, nearly full price) then later the year FIFA 09 - great!

Just played the demo of Euro 2008 and it seem to continue EAs known problems (for years already) in their soccer efforts. What is EAs "positive momentum" in this regard? The online problems in PES 2008?

Still can't believe how some reviewers rated FIFA higher than PES even if the later was for some somewhat disappointing this time.

Please use a new engine this year for the Wii and not the one created for the PS2.

Very excited about the advancements of Fifa 09! PES is a beaten game..Konami have been overtaken by EA!!

Please focus on putting the passion into the game..you only needed to see the amazing coverage that ESPN/SKY provide when covering a football match!

Passion is missing from Fifa.

The Fifa 09 team need to break passion and excitement down and find a method to getting the player fully immersed by his footballing experience.

The team could start looking at actual football matches..watch the Liverpool vs Ac Milan 2005 final!

Liverpool losing 3 - 0 by half time saw a dejected Liverpool side who were completely out of it..the team were playing badly, the fans had lost their voice, and the commentators had lost hope and were praising milan and calling the game dead..up pops Gerrard and the rest is history..the fans start screaming..the players play beyond their abilities and the comentators begin to be positive and sprout metaphors to Lazarus! The director of the TV coverage shows the emotions of the players giving the TV audience at home further excitement and passion!

Pro Evo has got some of this right with the TV highlights and cutscenes..Konami have also managed to get an emotional connection with the player and their team through the master lg campagn which properly shows the progression and attachment of the team and the player.

To clarify this, Djimi Traore has an aweful touch but his long legs tackled well..in Pro evo you use him becuase hes a great tackler but you cringe when he gets the ball because you know there could be a problem..that cringe is an emotional connection with what is happening on screen and the player. If Fifa could explore this connection, then they would be onto a winner..that is why evo sells! a player feels that his team is his..and his changes make a difference to the way his team play on the pitch...

So a more realistic representation of the players is important! not just there ability levels but their faults! you highlight a players skills by also highlighting their faults..it gives them a personality!! one that a player can connect with to their real life counterpart!

Taking the referee out is a big mistake...referees are highliy important in the excitement and passion..the position of the ref in relation to an incident would justify a bad decision made by the AI referee..and also provides a hate figure for the player..if the game isnt going their way!

The highlight system and player cutscenes need to be completely re-developed..the monotonous scripted animations add nothing to the experience and most players skip all cutscences..the acting by the players is completely cartoony and over done! simple looks of the eyes and hands going on heads is enough..players hitting their air with their fists is corny to the extreme!!

This is a shame as cutscenes are a massive part of emotion and excitement, the player likenesses can be pretty poor..for some reason the way shirts hang on players make them look bloated and over weight...footballers are lean and athletic..they need to look like that!

Old Trafford in 08 is amazing..every stadium needs that attention to detail..ive noticed the game response lags in some stadiums such as Anfield...i get better quicker AI movement when i play at the Nou Camp or Old Trafford!

The manager mode needs to be exactly that...get rid of the stupid sponsor deals from un heard of companies..the silly mulitiple choice questions...focus it on the football and training..

Make formations make a difference..

Bring in a training mode that improves the attributes of the players (in game and user) throughout the course of the season..and make those difference visible during matches (brings a connection with the player and players).

Improve the transfer engine..with realistic transfers and real time negotiating..why not align negotiations with the football engine..e.g) if you try to sign a defender and it goes public..your current defenders in your squad get a morale hit..or play better because they have something to prove! (depending on the players personality)

Player personalities added alongside abilities...this paves the way to make the players more realistic humans..e.g robbie savage going in aggressively..berbatov looking miserable all the time...rooney chasing every ball and making a rash challenge by the end of it..these things define players!!!

Injuries being more subtle and more serious...different stages could be added..

e.g. 1 - 10 (1 being a small hit...10 being a bad break)..have appropriate varying animations to show this..show what a horrible challenge could do to a player..you might then stop online players kicking ppl off the pitch! if someone does do this..penalise them with appropriate referee action..red cards for dangerous lunges.

I think ive given you some gold here! if you implement half of these changes..i think you could create a footballing series that will be untouchable..

You need to think about why we watch/play football..its not because we want to kick a ball into a net but because we love the excitement/adrenaline/emotion.

Thanks Peter for being here. Now that the announcement about NFL Head Coach & Madden are going to be bundled to make the 20th Annivesity Madden package, how do those who may just want to play Head Coach find an answer in this sceme of things? What went into that final decision?

I think what Dominic Fernando was trying to say Peter was you need to get a development team who is passionate about the soccer (god I hate having to use that word) to develop fifa.

Look at GT5 the team is passionate about cars, the game is automotive porn, and is probably illegal in some US states.

Skate was a breath of fresh air in boarding circles

Pro Evo (winning 11) is made by rabid soccer fans (apparently, I don't claim to know they're rabid or fans) and you can see it in how they approach different platforms, PES08 for the wii is a work of genius dont ya think?

the only things Fifa has going for it atm is 5 vs 5 online and be a pro, and I may pick up fifa 08 from the bargin bin just to play a season or two as a pro as it is such a novel system for a sports title and a brave inclusion, yet some how when controlling the whole team the experience that be a pro brings is lost.

Damn I'm rambling again and it past 1am so SORT FIFA ;) get some euro devs to look into it or at least get your boys to research the tournaments they are represnting in FIFA to actually resemble their real life counter parts please.

        Hi peter,

i just have a few idea's and questions that i'd like to express. I realize that alot of work and money go into these games, but what i wanted to say is that i truly value the graphics regarding madden o8 on both the ps3 and 360 although it seemed as certain parts of the game could have been polished up alittle better. The players on the sidelines honestly looked like the players from  gameday 98 for ps one,and i know that the graphic potential of these two systems (ps3and 360)can give off a more smoother pherhial view of the background and players on the side line. So it would be much apperciated if this could be touched up. i aso noticed that the game speed doesn't seem to be up to par as far as comparing it to the ps2 version.the only other request that i would like to be seen on the new upcoming madden is that maybe there could be alittle bit more to the superbowl, such as maybe like the national anthem at the beginning of the presentation of the superbowl and a half time show of a music artist like in real life or if need be put in some fictional characters for that in case someone would get money hungry and decide they wanted money for there name to be in the game.and that some of the faces on the big time players be defined a little better, not that they aren't but some of the big time players looked the same.overall though i'm sorry if my request seem petty but i just wanted you to here my suggestions.

                                                        thanks for your time.
