In this blog you'll see what Peter thinks about sports, sports video games, and the industry in general. We hope this gives you an inside look at EA SPORTS, so please enjoy!

Peter Moore About Peter EA Support

March 14th

Greetings from Dana Point in Southern California, where I’m excited to have joined some of the top minds in sports over the past few days at an event hosted by the Sports Business Journal called World Congress of Sports. It is testament to the power of sports video games that I could share the stage with key executives from the NFL, NBA, FIFA, etc. and not feel that our industry doesn’t belong here. There were some fascinating presentations, if you are interested in the business of global sports. I’m perhaps even more excited to have landed in time on Tuesday to have caught the 1-0 win by Liverpool over Inter Milan at the San Siro to send them through to the quarter-finals of the Champion’s League. Another great goal by Fernando Torres secured the win.

As promised, we’re finally up and running today with our new look and blog format.  This is a little more pleasing to the eye, huh? We knew when we did our “beta” launch last month that we were a few weeks away from getting it exactly right, so thanks for bearing with me, and still getting involved regardless of the somewhat clunky format.

As a neophyte blogger, there are a few things I’ve learned about the blogosphere over the past few weeks:

- I love the feedback, regardless of how hard you are on me, the dev teams and our titles.  I’ll echo what I’ve already said here, and that’s that it’s fun hearing from you and that your feedback is going directly to those teams.  That’s a big reason why I wanted to even do this in the first place.  And rest assured that with our migration to this new format, all of the original posts and comments from the past month remain in our forums.

- On the feedback, I can’t guarantee everything you suggest will get into the games or that we even agree with it.  I also will never be able to answer all of your questions and respond to all your comments.  But I can promise you that your feedback is valued and so starting this month I’m going to begin having producers from our different game teams join me as guests where we’ll review the top questions and comments from the blog.  Stay tuned for that…

- It has deepened my respect for the EA SPORTS brand that I have been proud to inherit. Your passion and input for the titles is indicative of the relationship so many of you have with the experiences we create for you, and not unlike the relationship we have with our favorite teams. Some weeks you love them, other weeks, not so much. My goal is provide you with a more consistent and predictable quality experience with everything that we develop for you…

What else is going on?

- This is the time of year when we have a lot of fun announcing our cover athletes.  Earlier this week, we announced that Jeff Gordon will cover NASCAR 09. While it’s hard to argue with that pick, that’s exactly what’s been happening in the final days of our contest to select the cover mascot for NCAA Football on the Wii.  The contest ends later today, and we have a close battle for the cover, with Washington State, Michigan State, Auburn, Nebraska and Central Florida making up the top 5.  I’ve been calling all my friends in the Bay Area all week to get them to vote for Cal…Who wouldn’t want to see Oski on the cover of a video game?

- I’ve seen speculation the past few days about the comments we’ve made recently about new IP coming this year from EA SPORTS.  While we’re still a couple of months away from any official new game announcements, I’m encouraged by the interest and excitement.  As I’ve said many times over the past few months, as EA SPORTS looks to expand our brand and capture new audiences, developing new intellectual property - such as FaceBreaker and future unlicensed titles - will be a key component of that strategy. As an extension to those comments, and coming fresh out of our sku plan reviews of last week, I can tell you we now have EIGHT titles in development for the Wii, testament both to the global impact of that console currently in the global marketplace, as well as to our desire to attract more consumers to experience EA SPORTS games, no matter their experience playing games nor their prowess with a traditional controller.

- You all know I’m a huge baseball fan, and despite my current angst about Josh Beckett’s back spasms and Curt Schilling’s shoulder, I can’t wait for the regular season to get under way in a couple of weeks. So you can imagine that I was interested to see the new ads for MLB 2K8 last weekend on ESPN, as I was watching SportsCenter.  Amusing spots to say the least.  Any of you old-school EA SPORTS fans recognize anything there? Anybody remember Gimme?????

Hopefully you will all enjoy this new format, and look for us to take full advantage of the multi-media opportunities it affords us over the coming weeks, with audio and video clips, interviews, and more links to breaking news from EA SPORTS.

Cheers,

Peter

I totally remember the Dennis Leary EA spots.  I was laughing quite sarcastically at that.  I can't wait for EA to drop the boom on 2k.  They completely trashed MLB2k8 and they never had a chance with APF 2k8.  Now Basketball is the lone exception and really the only property that I like about 2k.  If 2k should bow out to EA,  You have got to bring in the VC boys to help with NBA 09.  These guys really know basketball.

Being a big show fan I await anxiously for EA to possibly get back into the baseball scene again.  I have been playing EA baseball games since the beginning.  I really want to see was EA can bring to the table.  Just leave that Brinkman character in the ruins of 2k.  He completely ruined baseball.

Only sport I care about is football and there's no competition in that area. It's sad because as a sport, they thrive on competition, so you'd figure they'd allow it in video games also. I guess money can buy everything. Especially when you have money to throw around like the aggressive bid that EA just made for Take Two. 2k5 is still the best football game around and it's going on 4 years old. EA's too busy creating accessories instead of laying the foundation. 2k was built on a beautiful football engine and EA still hasn't matched it. EA still hasn't matched the online leagues that 2k put out 4 years ago. Superstar mode and all the other necessities can go to hell. I want a stable, fun engine. Quality over quantity.

When talking about older EA games, I want to know when we're going to see some new stuff from EA Sports Big that isn't based on the traditional sports.  I'd really like to see a sequel to the  "Freekstyle" game.  That game was great.  Also an SSX game for the 360/PS3 would be a ton of fun.  All snowboarding we've had for the 360 is Amped 3, which was decent, but not great by any means, and was definetely overshadowed by all the other great 360 launch games.

I'm really taking a liking to your hands-on approach Mr. Moore.  Since you'll be having the producers interact with us, here's something I'd like to see the Madden team comment on:

What is being done to sure up the gameplay?  How are you going to correct these issues?

-Offensive line logic/ability

-Linebackers soaring to new heights to make INTs and deflections

-Defenders stopping at a dime to make plays on the ball

-Defense moving in sync with the ball carrier and receivers (seen clearly on kick returns AND additionally, WR's can hardly get separation from the corners)

-More authentic animations (tackling, blocking, RB running into the O-line, etc)

Mr. Moore.

Love the new blog. It's a better way to connect with the fans and gamers that EA has.

Being a Madden fan I will tell you that you guys have come far but you guys are taking step backwards each year instead of going foward.

Please make online leagues. 2k has had this option for 3/4 years now? There is no reason why EA shouldn't establish this in their games.

The spec catch weapon is a nice addition but maybe a little too effective. Maybe it should be a meter that fills up to allow your wr to make spec catches instead of automatically being able to spec catch. Kind of like the Smart Defender.

My league has been running now since Madden 06. We love being able to draft our teams from scratch and taking them online and playing a full 16 game schedule and playoffs included. Problem is this year there are no stats after the games? Why not Mr. Moore? I ask you to allow us to have the stats of our games, custom teams or not. Another thing I dislike about custom teams is that everytime we make a trade with another team in our league we are forced to re-create the team all over again instead of just dropping and adding the players we traded.

One last thing. just beef up the game play. Refs on the field, players on the sidelines doing something, more fan interation. Please. Mr. Moore

Other than that just keep kicking ass.

Please, oh please, find a way to get back into baseball.  Sports games desperately need competition so that they can evolve.  As an 360 owner, I'm sad that I'm stuck only with MLB 2k8, a mediocre showing.

first of all, i am not here to bash 2k for their baseball.  i'm here to ask when ea sports is going to start living up to their reputation.  for years as a sports video game fan i have been subjected to subpar showings of madden, nba live, ncaa football and march madness, and until recently nhl.  coming from sega and helping 2k there and microsoft you helped push the envelope in quality sports games.  i want to know if you are going to help ea sports get off its laurels and start following through on a lot of their promises.  when are you going to integrate espn into the games fully?  when are you going to get quality presentation in games like madden and nhl?  i dont want to hear about ea sports branded wear or equipment, i want to hear about when its going to be back in the game.

I had not played Madden since it was on the Sega Genesis, but I decided to pick up the 08 copy.  I was impressed with the amount of options there were.  I loved the game play, and enjoyed the franchise mode.  I only have three constructive criticisms about the entire game that I can think of.  These are in no particular order:

1.  For me, and I believe most average players, there are way too many buttons to think about.  The learning curve was huge for me, and I am pretty sure that I still don't use a lot of the options correctly.  The Family Mode that was included on the Wii, should be included for all versions.  My wife would love to play with me, but gets frustrated with the controls, so she does not play.  Have a "dumbed down" version so somebody can pick it up choose a play, run or pass.

2.  I still do not understand the purpose of "practice".  I have been able to win most of my games without doing any practice.  Also, the practice sessions seem way too hard in their level of difficultly.  Again, this is coming from someone who has not played Madden in about 10 years.

3.  This is probably the biggest one for me, and I hope you guys do something about it.  THE SUPER BOWL SHOULD FEEL LIKE THE SUPER BOWL!  It took months getting my team to the Super Bowl, hours of playing time.  Trading, drafting, and what happens when it's the Super Bowl?  Not much.  I mean, the Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event in the history of sports.  The last one was the second most watched show EVER.  C'mon, with NFL licensing, take advantage!!  Make me feel like I am playing the biggest event of the year, not just another game!

I really don't know what the possibility of those changes would be, but I felt like throwing in my two cents.  I appreciate the communication with the fans, and in the end, I really loved Madden 08, and look forward to Madden 09.  Thanks again Mr. Moore, and good luck to you and EA Sports.

First and foremost, I really think you need to bring back FCS schools for the PS3/360 consoles in NCAA Football. It is an insult to these institutions who are proud division one schools to not include them. I guess App State will have to beat LSU for another "monumental" win to open the season to get noticed by EA. With Armanti Edwards (QB for Appalachian State) on the pre-season New York Times Heisman Watch list, you are effectively leaving out one of the best players in college football.

With that said, I love the dynasty mode in NCAA football, but I think a great idea would be to create a program from the ground up, kind of a combination of the facility upgrades in March madness. You would start out by creating a school and begin play in a non-scholarship league in I-AA (like the Pioneer league). Then with success, your boosters would grant you scholar ships and move up to a power I-AA conference like the SoCon (App State’s Conference).

After you have one a few national championships and maybe a legendary upset or two, you would be invited to a new conference, or even a new conference that was assembled of the best I-AA teams that that point. Then it would function much like the current dynasty mode, with an invite to a more established league. You could also measure the success of your conference by the amount of sponsorships (Under Armor, Nike, Adidas) and stadium enhancements where you could build it from a glorified HS stadium all the way up to something that will hold 100,000.

This would solve a number of things, like the inclusion of FCS teams and playoffs, the ability to improve your stadium, and the ability to move your program from nothing to everything.

I've been a long time gamer.  Since Apple II.  I remember still playing Earl Weaver Baseball 1 & II on PC 15-20 years ago.  Some EA sports games are good, some are trash.  I  am now a console gamer most of the time, but I think my suggestions apply to both console and PC.

Graphics - ensure games not only look good, but play at a smooth frame rate.  A steady 30 fps is not that great anymore and any frame dips can be noticed right away.  It's choppy, unpolished and wrecks havoc on gameplay.  Even if it means sacrificing graphical lighting and shading a bit, 60 fps makes EA games look much better.  The Madden and NHL 08's show this.  I'm suprised EA has taken so long to get to 60 fps.  Many competing games (2k) and other genres have 60 fps much of the time.  Maybe it's because EA programmers aren't too good?  Maybe they have so many platforms to support, resources are spread thin?  Who knows.  Please support this initiative with your dev teams.!  it would be a shame if future sports games downgraded to choppy frames.

Realism - Over the past few years, EA has really focused on authenticity than gimmicks.  Stick to this.  Let 2k sports have the cheesy mini-games and Midway or EA's offshoot sports games be the arcadey routes.  Don't mix arcade and sim in one game.  Not too long ago, EA sports had all sorts of filler and much of it has been scrapped.  Keep it that way!

ESPN Integration - EA got the license from 2k, so where's the ESPN stuff?  So far, it's just EA hogging a license to keep it out of 2k's hands.  2k sports had cool ESPN presentation.  Is EA ever going to do something with it?

Thanks for hearing me out.  Most EA 08 Sports for my 360 have been a noticeable step up.  Keep it going!  Thx.

i really don't want to bash as i respect the fact that you have provided a open forum for so many opinionated sports fans.....but. i have yet to enjoy madden since 95. madden was the original football game that got me into playing video football games, but tiburon has yet to produce anything close to 2k5 ( i am by no means a 2k fanatic, i am just realistic) the immersion of the espn label, the online leagues, the game play. its as  if tiburon has not striven to make a good game because they have no reason to. they have the exclusive license, they will sell a certain amount of games no matter what since it says "madden" on the cover. gameplay is robotic, animations are far from nextgen and online leagues are still absent. please take a look at what 2k is offering in that department as it is revolutionary. it just seems up until now ea has not listened to its most loyal fans and only chased the almighty buck. can you imagine what a developer like 2k could do with a budget like maddens?

The real reason I wanted to join the EA Sports e-mail link was not only to obtain vital information about the release of certain EA game titles, but also to offer my opinion on some minor adjustments to EA's Madden football franchise that I feel could enhance the game play experience.  First and foremost, I believe that the makers of Madden must offer some new uniform/character options for the current player models that exist.  Looking around the league it is obvious that not every player wears Reebok cleats.  I feel it would be instrumental for the developers of Madden to offer a wider variety of cleats styles.  I realize that shoe and licensing contracts play a major role in EA's decision to stick with a single brand and design of cleat but I believe that offering the gamer a greater cleat selection, ala NBA Live, would add to the graphical superiority that Madden aspires to achieve year in and year out.  I also feel that the gamer should be able to adorn their players with towels (preferably with QB towels being worn flat and in the front of the uniform like Tom Brady and position player given the option of wearing their towel on either hip) and also be able to individualize to some degree the signature style that each player in the NFL brings to the standard NFL uniform and the game as a whole.  Examples of the way individual players express their individuality on the field include differing sock styles (Ex; Terrence Newmann high socks, D'Angelo Hall's 3/4 crinkled sock look, Peyton Manning's old school style, Jeremy Shockey's short sock look) skull caps worn under the helmet like Ray Lewis, running styles (for instance Reggie Bush has a sprinters running style while Marvin Harrison runs with a stiff upper torso and almost pitter patters with his feet), and the various ways players tend to carry the ball (example; Dre' Bly/Charles Woodson's respective one handed ball grip and the maneuvering of the ball from side to side while holding the ball with both hands similar to the flare that Deion Sanders brought to the game).  Another aspect that can be improved upon is the stances that players around the league have come to be recognized by.  A prime example of this would be Simeon Rice's pre-snap sprinter stance, Champ Bailey's widespread 5 yard cushion coverage stance, D'Angelo Hall's in your face bump and run stance, or Lawrence Taylor's vertical stance.(*1) Another aspect I would hope the makers of madden improve upon is the ability to control a players actions during the week leading up to a game.  Being able to control a player's film study sessions as well as their eating habits and weight lifting/workout routines and their overall dedication to the game as a whole would offer a realistic touch to an already great game.  Hopefully this particular e-mail doesn't fall upon deaf ears because I feel that some of these changes would make Madden more apealing to the general masses.  Let's face it, Madden is going to sell no matter what but making a few minor adjustments here and there could always help..Thank You for your time and please take my adivice into consideration.

(*1) One way I feel Madden developers could achieve such player individuality motion captures would be to outfit current NFL superstars with specialized motion sensor suits, similar to the suits EA currently implements via the use of green screen technology, during training camp sessions or preseason games

Hello Mr.Moore,

If at all possible, please consider releasing NFL Headcoach'09 atleast a month before NCAA'09. I recently read a publication that has NFL Headcoach'09 listed for a 'Q42008' release date, if I'm not mistaken that is around the same time that Madden'09 will be coming out.

I'm asking EASports to consider releasing NFL Headcoach sometime this Spring/Summer because I don't want to have to choose between NFL Headcoach and Madden/NCAA; in the perfect world I'd be able to play HeadCoach this Spring, NCAA this summer, and Madden this fall.

Please keep the 2k sports and give them the rights to make an NFL game. If you own them, you should allow them to use the license. Also, force your team to do more with the NFL license. I really want Classic teams in all sports and the ability to change names, and numbers with online play. The classic teams represent so much because those guys paved the way for the new generation. Whether its Jackie Robinson or Jim Brown, its really cool to allow people to play with those guys. Madden needs competition very bad, not NFL Tour but NFL 2k9!

I agree with the numerous gamers that are saying we want to see more use of the ESPN license. With all due respect, if I wanted to watch PTI, I'd watch it on TV. Let's see some SportsCenter in our season mode. Pre Game shows, Halftime shows, and Post game shows. Maybe even NFL Blitz with Chris and T.J.

I really enjoyed Madden this year but its really missing the small details. Sideline stuff, cut scenes, etc. And although EA is the top dog please don't be so proud not to check out what somebody else is doing too. I wish for the life of me that upon developing the next Madden for "small details," that you guys would check out MLB 08 The Show. Its like TV man, sooooo many of us wanna see that.

I can only imagine THAT kind of presentation on a game like Madden!!!!!!!!  BAAAMMMMMMM!!!!

Next thing, PLEASE PLEASE have your sports titles with all games playable in season mode like Madden and NCAA Football this year. NHL and FIFA dropped that ball on this, and Live hasn't done it for a few years. For us single players, 1 user in BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last thing, I'm on my knees..................If and when you guys aquire Take-Two PLLLEEEEEAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEE don't do away with NBA 2K. I'm sorry guys, I'm a EA guy. But 2K is years ahead of Live. There is a reason why the rating has been so much higher for years now. Maybe intergrate the two. NBA 2K is a dynamite game but they can really use graphics as good as EA's.

EA fan since '91. Keep it up guys....

Mr. Moore, I must commend you for giving us, the consumer, a forum to voice our opinions regarding EA's various titles.  As you can see from the responses received on this blog, the buyers of EA's games are very adamant about what they want in their games.  It is now up to you to act upon what we have said and not just let us waste our time blogging.  We need you to get together with individuals like David Ortiz and make the necessary changes that will ultimately satisfy the gaming appetite of EA's supporters  Unfortunately, it seems as though the brain trusts behind EA's various titles have rested upon their past successes and have not taken their respective games to the next level.  Please take heed Mr. Moore because if EA continues its trend of producing sub par games, we as a gaming nation will stop using blogs to get our point across and will be forced to boycott buying EA games, thus hitting EA where it counts, in the pocket book

I find that 2K's NBA title is better as a basketball game, but it's very hard to resist the level of polish on a Live title. The menus and graphics and sounds and just about everything is better in Live, but it's just not as good for the actual 'game.' There's stuff that should just not happen in basketball games when there's no pressure on your character; going out of bounds on an inbound, stepping back over center court. Theres a lot of frustrating issues in both games but Live they are far more prevalent. Also the "Hot Zones" are quite obnoxious looking. Colouring the entire court during play is ridiculous, and 2k's solution of cell-phone-style signal bars is much better.

It's hard to articulate most of my problems with Live, just because it's been 6 months since I played it. But my money went to NBA 2K8, and that's a shame, because I've played Live games since 2001.

At least they didn't repeat the Live 2007 disaster. That was.... nightmarish.

With the recent talks about Take-Two and EA, I guess one possible thing to look forward to is the possibility of EA having the MLB back. If that happens, I hope they can make a game to the quality that MVP 05 was. I still consider that game to be one of the best sports game ever made, however NHL 08 may have took that title this year.

Hello

Mr Moore. I know you worked with Sega on the  Dreamcast. I assume that you also worked with some of the guys at 2KSports (Virtual Concept). If EA does get 2kSport please don't take down 2k's NBA games. Also, I believe that EA does not need to close 2k Sports. It would be to beneficial to leave the two Game Studios to fight for more customers. And, in the end all the money goes to EA and customers get quality products.

Competition is always good and there are many success stories. For instance Bestbuy in Canada did just that. they bought Futureshop and kept is as a competitor of Bestbuy Canada and they have made a lot of profits.

Cheers

I'm actually hoping EA Sports can take a cue from Road to The Show and implement some of the off the field mechanics into Superstar Mode for Madden or even add more to Legend mode for NCAAF.

Great to see you being more hands on with the fans. Keep up the good work.

Peter Moore,

I am curious why EA Sports does not have a Contact Us section to their website for suggestions on their games.  My favorite is NCAA and my intention is to buy it the day it is released as I have done ever since this series started.  I hope that EA Sports is committed to listening to their customers since the website doesn't indicate that you are willing to listen.

My suggestions are as follows:

The ability to hire coordinators in career mode (Defensive, Offensive)

The coordinators would use their style of play if the head coach (user) approves.  Examples would be using a 3-4 defense over a 4-3 defense if you hired a coach who primarily uses a 3-4 defense.

Please make the passing game more accessible for the 360.  I never pass since the DB's jump 100 feet in the air to pick me off in one-on-one coverage.  This is very frustrating.

Can we adjust the fumbling option?  It seems that way too many fumbles are happening.

I would like to have the option to expand the stadium.  This could be very cool.  My team is Texas A&M.  We could build the South End Zone project.  This could be very creative if this is implemented correctly.

Recruiting needs lots of work.  A list of interested prospects would ease the frustration.

Bring back the pennant collection.  This was very cool and adds to the replay value.

Spring/Offseason Drills.  This was in the PS2 version the last two years.  Make it similar to Madden and you have the makings of a fun mini-game.

Thank you for listening to my suggestions.  I hope to see some of these considered and/or implemented for future versions.

Yeah i'm wit COACH on that one is that really in the game? I think having the QB CONE will help MADDEN 09 out because with that you cant just run back 40 yards complete a 70 yard catch.

You guys say it's in the game but when i watch real football madden looks nothing like that. that why when i turn on my game i hate when it says IF IT'S IN IN THE GAME , IT'S IN THE GAME

And stop making the user so good, CHAMP wasn't even a fear Cornerback on the game.

QB 's don't hold the ball like that watch the way they hold it in real and watch how they wine up to make a deep pass.

Call some nfl head coaches and the'll explain how hard the game of football is........  THANKS 4 Letting me speak OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'm a bit lazy, so i haven't read through all the comments. i got the link to your blog via GameSpot, and i thought i would share some personal insight as a Wii owner and a sports fanatic.

as evidenced by MLB2K8, game publishers (to a lesser degree, EA) seem to care very little about Wii sports game enthusiasts. i realize there are technical limitations to what can be done graphically with games, but it doesn't seem to make sense that in sports games, we get barely PS2 quality visuals while games like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Brothers Brawl look drool-worthy gorgeous.

i think recently, the biggest cheapening happened with a non EA game, MLB2K8. the mechanics for batting were just all wrong, and the pitching mechanic was completely detached from reality. barely moving my wrist up and down does not a 98mph fastball make. i know y'all no longer have rights to MLB games, and its a damned shame.

the swing mechanics in Tiger Woods are examples of things done RIGHT. whilst admittedly buggy in some aspects, its still great to actually pull back on a swing and let loose while everything i do, from my wrist placement and angle of the remote are taken into account. usually my shots are awful from this, but its still breathtaking to know its something that i did, that i need to work on my swing to actually make it better.

but my experience with MLB2K8 has really burned me from future sports games purchases. graphics were much less than stellar, we were lied to about Minor League teams, no online play, no trading card bonus stuff... it was just a complete sham. i took it back the next day.

and that's where i saw the ad for NCAA 08 (or 09, i have trouble remembering these things).

i need this. i want this. as a Southerner and native Alabamian, nothing gets me excited more than a great four quarters of SEC football. next to being at games, playing them on my widescreen is the greatest thing. unless its a clone of Madden. i was not impressed by Madden, and i'm not sure if it was more the NFL thing or just feeling like i got the shaft as a Wii owner. i'll repeat, i know our beloved console has limitations, and lots of them. but not enough that should make for a generally unpleasant experience.

please... learn from the mistakes of the past. understand that just because i and so many others own a Wii that we only love Mario and Zelda.

Peter, will EA's Baseball series ever see a release here in Australia? For some reason we keep getting all the Ice Hockey games (EA and 2K Sports) yet baseball has a much larger following!

Can this be resolved with this years impending 09 EA Sports titles? Worst case scenario, make the game region free so we can import it at least :-)

"[...] make the game region free so we can import it at least :-)", Shane Bryan.

That's a point that really annoys me each and every year: Sports games, which are not even planned to be released outside the states and are only released in NTSC for 360. Why not region free? The few interested from overseas could easily import them, generating some extra sales, without having the publisher cost for distribution and marketing. That's a thing even 2k never listened to their non-US fans. I would have bought APF and the College Hoops-games for sure, but no, they don't want my money. And now it seems to be to late for those games.

What's also sad is, that there is no EA game I'd mourn about in this way - not that they release them region free, the quality is simply not there. But a change in EAs release policy maybe leds Take Two follow suit in that regard. So Mr. Moore, please consider region free releases for games, that won't be released in PAL.

I'm glad you can see the positive in this pool of negativity, and I think you hit the nail on the head in that it shows you our passion for video games.  Like I told you in one of your first blogs... we don't want to be against you.  We grew up on Madden.  But I'm still at least a year or two away from buying another Madden title.  I don't think you will be able to right this ship until at least Madden2010 (and even then I will be skeptical and won't give you the benefit of the doubt).  But I do respect what you've done with this blog and the way you've handled yourself.  And that gives me hope for the future of "our" video games.

Mr. Moore, I recall in an interview with Game Informer you mentioned something along the lines of making Maddemn more playable for casual gamers. Is there way to customize the engine to satisfy the casual as well as the hardcore gamer who wants more simulation and realism? For instance why not just create a separate arcade mode for the casual user who knows very little about football. This can possibly perhaps increase your sales which from what I understand decreased last year.

It's not in the game should be EA's new slogan....Please, please please start paying less attention to senseless details and pay greater attention to important details in Maddden 09...While EA may goes as far as to insure that a senseless vending machine is displayed in the proper area of a given stadium, EA may miss an important detail pertaining to a team's uniform or a star player's distiguishing feature..The makers of Madden must put towels on players, offer more cleat brands and styles, unbuckle sum chin straps and belts, put in signature ball carrying, running styles, pass rushing, and throwing styles and also fix the unrealistic look of the tape jobs on players ankles before it focuses on the lights and banners that adorn a certain stadium .

Josh Schmidt said:

March 20, 2008 6:15 AM

RON makes a good point with having a separate 'arcade mode' to please that crowd.  I know some of the previous NBA Live and NBA 2K installments had the option of playing in 'Arcade' mode or 'Simulation' mode.

The general consensus is that Madden has drifted more to an arcade side of the sports gaming realm.

statum71 said:

March 20, 2008 10:21 AM

I for one disagree with Pistol Pete's request. I wouldn't want to sacrifice stadiums and a realistic environment "around" the game for better gameplay. I think they can BOTH be done with outstanding details. If Sony can do it with MLB The Show 08, then I know EA can do it too. You aren't the biggest company for nothing......

Madden's Stadiums are great. Improvement on the small details, better gameplay, and commentary would bring the game up to next-gen expectations. That's just in the areas of gameplay and presentation. Not features.

As an avid PC gamer and football fan I was hugely dissapointed by the announcement that NFL Head Coach 2 won't be released. I really don't get why, because the PC is by far the best platform for any type of strategy game thanks to the mouse and keyboard controls.

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

statum71 said:

If Head Coach isn't coming out with another addition, maybe EA can use the cut scenes from that game for Madden 09. I've seen some pictures of Head Coach that quite frankly make me jealous as a Madden player. But I'm not interested in a strategy only game, so I'm outta luck on that one.

Mr. Moore, I am a huge fan of the MVP NCAA Baseball games, and would love to see them brought back to life.  I have heard many rumors on why EA did not pick the series up again this year, but no one seems to have a solid answer.

Even if EA could use the MVP engine in any baseball game (MLB?), it would still be a great game.  Since there were only two editions of the game, and only one with the new analog hitting and pitching features, few people have seen the full capabilities of this engine.  Give it another shot, and give us baseball fans our baseball game back, even if its not the college game this time around.  Everyone who hasent played on the engine will get hooked, and the old timers will continue in our ways.

Hello Mr. Moore,

I was just reading in Game Informer about your interest in sports that might appeal to Japanese gamers.  You mentioned Cricket, for one.  There is one sport that not only would interest Japanese gamers but would also still keep American and European gamers interest as well.(Cricket would be a no-go in the States)  HORSE RACING!  Tecmo and Koei have done some nice work in this area but EA has never touched it.  That is a shame.  You could make one hell of a game, especially if you can get the official license from the NTRA.  Real tracks, real horses, online play.  Lots of potential.  Please consider this as a way into Japanese gamers hearts as well as American, European, and Australian gamers as well.

Thanks,

Nick Briglia

Mr. Moore, I hope you and your develoment team are assesing the comments such as this forum regarding Madden very closely. These are a snapshot of your consumers' displeasure over what EA has delivered over the past few years particularly on next gen systems. Madden feels like a game more geared towards kids and young teens. Although we realize it's just a video game  adults enjoy these interactive experiences as well for entertainment and enjoyment. So how can this be achieved? PLEASE MAKE THE GAME MORE REALISTIC IN TERMS OF PRESENTATION,ANIMATIONS and GAMEPLAY INCLUDING SEVERAL suttle DETAILS SEEN IN AN ACTUAL GAME. to satisfy gamers who actually know something about football (hardcore gamers). As I mentioned in another post ,to appeal more towards kids and teens create an arcade mode like seen in past sports video games. And please remove that radio guy, that was a bad deisgn decision. Is your development team capable of doing that.? Do they actually watch NFL football? I hate to beat a dead horse but a major competitor of yours came very close three years ago to a rewarding, immersive  experience before being eliminated from the market. We as consumers are hoping for a much better realistic product in Madden '09 free of a lot of bugs and glitches present in last years game. Please take a step forward with the quality of your product and you will hear much less complaints and your sales will definitely improve from last year. THESE CONSUMERS KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!!

James Watts said:

I am also glad that you are aboard the EA team. Look, we all no Madden will sale no matter if it is a good game or not. NBA Live the same. We need more than just different year changes on our sports titles. $70 every year for the same exact product is getting ridiculous. I am there because I am a fan of EA but I am pretty sure all fans feel the same way. There has not been a major revamp to the engine or game since PS2. This is Next-Gen and we want something new.  I know you would agree that 2Ksports has superior products and thats why EA is trying to buy out take-two who makes 2k games. How about starting from scratch on a whole new engine and games completely. Sure graphics are pretty good, but gameplay are the most crucial ingredient. Please revamp the series from scratch and with simulation in style. Enough NBA Live arcade action. It cannot compete with NBA 2K. Period. Thanks.

I wanna ECHO exactly what RON said a few post up. I'm glad you started this blog. I REALLY REALLY hope that you and EA as a whole take heed. Aside from some of the stupid post like "EA sucks" and all that nonsense, there are some really good suggestions on this blog.

We know EA will never satisfy everybody. But I think most of us agree that the flagship sport should have the flagship game. And right now that's not the case. Baseball (MLB 08 The Show), Basketball (NBA 2K8), Hockey (NHL 08), Golf (Tiger Woods), Soccer (FIFA 08), and College Football (NCAA 08) are all currently better than the game for the number one sport in this country.....Pro Football. And nearly all of it has to do with PRESENTATION!

But somehow, I really have a feeling this is Madden's year.

Peter, the new models for NCAA Football 09 look great...It seems like Ea has really improved upon its player models from last year.  I would just like to see the option for players to wear hanging towels from their waistband..The towel would be an important addition to the overall look of the uniforms for NCAA football 09.  If you look back at the greatest collegiate players of all time the towel played such an instrumental part in their each players unique uniform style...From Deion Sanders double towel look to Reggie Bush's long skinny tail like towel look there is no denying how important the towel is to the college and also the professional uniform

tark the shark said:

March 25, 2008 5:30 PM

I agree with nuba1stunna that towels should be added to the game.  I know this post does not  offer a signifigant suggetionfor improving the overall game play of Madden or NCAA football 09 but in terms of making each respective game more realistic, towels are a must...The uniform is just not complete without the presense of towels, hand warmers, etc, so put your creative noggins together and put a towel option in the game!!

I have been an EA fan (especially Madden and NCAA) for a solid 10 years now. You guys are the BEST in my book, but you have fallen off of late and I'm hopeful that will change. Now I'm not usually into this blog stuff, but I have to piggy-back on a few things I've read in here.

First...PLEASE get ESPN integration as fully incorporated into Madden and NCAA as possible. The more realism the better!

Second...I agree w/ comments I've seen about the Superbowl (and I'll add the BCS games ESPECIALLY the natl championship games in NCAA football) needing to be more "special". If you're a purist like I am, you want to play on a tough level and bring a poor team/program up and finally reach the promised land. This can take a while to do. When you finally do get to the "top" and it's like playing the first game of the regular season, it's very disappointing.  PLEASE do something to set the championships/superbowls apart from the rest of the games. More with the presentation including pre-game, in game, and post game. Have some variety in there too!

Finally (for now)...the games need some drastic improvements to set them apart from the past couple of years. Madden 08  had some improvements, but overall the past few yrs have been more about adding "gimmicks" than to the realism, gameplay, and presentation. I feel this was especially true in NCAA football the past few years. Realism, presentation, and gameplay is where it's at. If anyone can do it...EA can!!! (hate to sound like a cheerleader there but...)

Good luck with the new job Mr. Moore!!

Mr. Moore,

I am 16 years old and I have been playing ea sports games since i was 5. My first game was madden 64 for the N64. But what I don't understand, is how you could make an arena football and rugby videogame before you could think of making a lacrosse videogame. I thought it would be a great idea considering all of the lacrosse videogame petitions and forums out there. I looked on the website for someone to email my ideas and I thought you were the perfect person.

NCAA Lacrosse 09 or 10, use all of the D-1 schools and make customizable sticks, helmets, jerseys, and pads. If you could get the game sponsored by a major lacrosse company like warrior or brine, I see the game being a huge success.

I know you have a lot to do where you work, and this is a huge request, but this would attract the attention of almost every lacrosse player in America. Seeing how lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the country, you would make millions. From my perspective, this would be a higher profiting game than most hockey and nascar videogames even if you combine the profits.
